So basic DBA skills + expert programming skills + very good math/stats?

Also - your model of asking questions before starting a new gig is very relevant to nearly every programming job. Could also be some of the questions a candidate asks in an interview.

Have you ever needed any Microsoft skills(MSSQL/C#) so far?

I don't think it is a trivial situation. I think you are being pragmatic moving over if some dude gets antsy behind you.

Road rage is serious business. I think intent is hard to guess and we err on the side of caution. You are right that you open yourself up to mistakes if you weave and dodge through traffic. Tough call sometimes.

"Reasons are complicated and hard to know yourself" -- this is especially true for complex decisions. Sometimes you don't know yourself and trust your gut instinct. The real reason your inner thought suggested a 'no' reveals to you slowly. By explaining your reason to others you risk closing that loop. Some thoughts are better unsaid.

edit: I have found this especially true in family/personal matters

You want to be this guy?

edit: how about a life-coach for startups or even a business coach. The person in the URL above seems to be what you aspire to maybe?

"This means that anyone who declines to be part of the Animal farm, can neither leave the country nor work there" --- you mean 'either leave the country or not work there?"

Looks like its just plain Ruby --> https://jekyllrb.com/docs/home/

"Jekyll is a simple, blog-aware, static site generator. It takes a template directory containing raw text files in various formats, runs it through a converter (like Markdown) and our Liquid renderer, and spits out a complete, ready-to-publish static website suitable for serving with your favorite web server."

So its just that the ecosystem that is weaker compared to Rails? When would be a good point to learn Phoenix after having say gone down the road learning Rails.

Also - can this last part be written different? Feels monolithic

sudo -u postgres bash -c "cat > /var/lib/postgresql/9.2/main/recovery.conf <<- _EOF_ restore_command = 'env ......blahblah"

Re:Ask HN: Anybody do maths as a hobby? on Wednesday May 03, 2017 @09:55AM (#14255628)
Thank you for writing this out. Your feelings mirror mine to a 't'. I have a Masters in EE from an American university and had to take 2 math classes [applied math I & II] to pass - boy was it a slog!

Long story short - sites like betterexplained.com have done a better job re-igniting my interest in math again.

Pardon me if you are someone famous that I should know - but you write well (not being glib/facetious). I didn't see a blog in your profile but I would read it were it to be featured.

Concur - Kalid approaches things through first principles and teaches the 'how' very well. The ideas and approaches can be translated into almost anything else. I hope he keeps on keeping on.
Re:Ask HN: Stick with Flask or Learn Ruby on Rails? on Wednesday March 15, 2017 @05:24AM (#13874853)
How do you like developing on Rails? You have the value of past experience with Flask - does the 'newer' approach of RoR work for you?

Can you try rewriting in RoR/Elixir/NewShiny to see if that feeling goes away? Would you lose clients because of the switch to RoR?

All good items to ponder - that would be my thought process.I hope it helped.

Re:You Suck at Excel with Joel Spolsky (2015) [video] on Thursday September 08, 2016 @05:06AM (#12451391)
Can you talk more about this? What do you your analysts do in terms of EDA ==> Python+ R + db work? Would you do it old school i.e writing it down?

I practice writing things down when I cannot digest a huge piece of information. Or do visual notes like Mike Rohde.

Re:How to use your full brain when writing code on Tuesday August 02, 2016 @07:52AM (#12209220)
Thank you for writing this. How do you figure that I can learn about ..say.. project management or any other tangentially related subject while I code at work (meaning that coding or developing is my main job)

I guess what I want to know is this - can you apply these principles to learn other stuff to get you ahead in life while getting hit on the head with kids responsibilities etc? Pardon - for the ramble and incoherence :)

Yeah, it sounds like a ploy.

I haven't signed it. I reached out to them via email, regarding a few minor terms that I'd like to have modified. I hope to then use that to go broad(er), ask for a verbal discussion and modified terms.

Negotiation is tough,it should've been a course in engineering school. Thank you for the advice.

Thanks, I agree with what you said. But to me it is unusual that they start off with a draft agreement and want me to reach out to them to negotiate. Seems backwards.
Would an offer letter come with an employment agreement? the said employment agreement gives me a period of 5 days to mull on and then accept.

Would a proposed job offer word it so that the onus is on you to reach out to them if you dont agree with the terms?

I have usually had a call with the manager of a team who would then discuss the $$ and we'd call it good. The paperwork would follow. But would an offer letter say that 'to discuss blah blah please contact blah'? Seems a little odd.

I agree with all the points you've made so far.

yes, I did apply for it.

Ask HN: Would you accept a job offer without salary negotiations

If you were presented with an offer letter with your prospective salary, would you take it knowing that you had had no negotiation prior to that? Especially if the offer is a semi-overseas offer? Like, nobody talked or setup any conversations around compensation and out of the blue emerges an offer letter with the $$ amount already decided for you. The job description does not mention any...

How easy was the transition to EU? Are visa-required jobs advertised upfront.

I thought EU was way worse on Indians[regarding IT jobs]

wiki shows only this - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deconcentration_of_attention

I am adding this on to spark a simpler explnation from someone who is experienced with this.

An excerpt from her website talks about this, link found from wikipedia, http://molchanova.ru/en/article/attention-deconcentration-fr... - "States close to AD can be achieved if person distributes attention on the field of vision periphery, i.e. focuses attention simultaneously on the regions above, below, on the left and on the right. Distribution of attention on the periphery requires voluntary efforts, since human visual apparatus is designed to detect objects in the central part of the vision field. There is useful deconcentration method when one imagines all objects are pictured on a transparent screen in front of him and concentrates attention only on the surface of the screen. This suspends spontaneous eye movements and focuses attention not on objects, but on fragments of vision field. If person performs the exercise correctly, his eyes do not “cling” to objects when he turns his head, but remain motionless relative to the head. This deconcentration type is called “planar deconcentration”. Further explanations can be found in Bakhtiyarov’s works."
