I think I am going to setup a VM with this. I really want to try the real thing. If it runs well enough in the VM I might just do all my development in and use the host OSX for everyday tasks.

I am looking into getting into Android development. Is it worth doing it without using Eclipse?

I really want to try out vim and tiling wm setup. Is this a good place to get my feet wet? I was going to just set up VM of ArchLinux.
I definitely don't think they deserve the valuations they are receiving. I just think that they are much more worthy of being a public company than either Facebook or LinkedIn are. People are always going to want to save money, that demand isn't going away. People change social networking services like shoes.
I think Groupon actually deserves high valuations. They actually have a clear and simple way to turn a profit. They also have a tremendous amount of business relationships that are hard to replace.

Talk about solving a burning market need..
I think the difference, for me at least, is that I have to pay for Salesforce's products. I trust a company with my data much more if I am paying them than I do a company that is not charging but instead using my data for advertising purposes. There is a lot more incentive to look at the data if you need to target ads at people.
I don't think any Social App will be able to replace email unless it is just as distributed and private as email is. Maybe if the Social App ran entirely on the users machine or they could run their own servers then it would have a chance to overtake email. Maybe something like Diaspora? The fact is, people send IMPORTANT emails. People who send these emails aren't going to have their correspondence in the cloud being raked through to squeeze advertising money out.
Re:Pandora Files To Go Public on Friday February 11, 2011 @08:04PM (#2208897)
The number one reason I love Pandora is that it offers an ad free paid version with higher quality. Its dead simple and does exactly what you want it to without tacked on social networking.
Re:Ask HN: Is it worth $60k and four years? on Thursday January 27, 2011 @01:16AM (#2146820)
It depends on your school and what you are learning. My advice is to take classes that you want to learn and don't worry so much about finding a job with your degree. College should broaden your mind and introduce you to new ways of thinking. I made the mistake of majoring in an IT degree. Besides the obvious problem of it not being Computer Science, it is incredibly outdated. I wish that I would have done a liberal arts degree and worked on tech on the side. I have learned so much about myself, life, and what I value from taking classes like philosophy, literature, etc. I really wish I would have realized college was about more than getting a job earlier so I could have switched majors.

I have been doing this at my various internships and side projects. I am pretty good at fitting things together from examples, tutorials, etc. I think I am lacking in not understanding how the magic works. I feel like a plumber most of the time just fitting different pipes together to get things working.

You sound like me so much. I over think everything. I have actually considered becoming a Buddhist to try and shut my mind off for a little while through meditation. I tend to have a very hard time doing things unless I spend a ton of time reasoning through whether or not I should do it. Most of the time when I decide I missed the boat.
Re:Ask HN: Getting Better on Thursday January 20, 2011 @03:24PM (#2125131)
I definitely have a hard time with this! I need to get over thinking everything I do has to be original. I think it definitely holds me back. I am also sick of the class grind at school. I feel like I am stuck doing pointless work that just takes up all my time.
Re:Ask HN: Getting Better on Thursday January 20, 2011 @03:22PM (#2125122)
Thanks for the advice. I have been thinking about making my own blog from scratch for a while now. I am going to get on that asap.

Ask HN: Getting Better

I am senior working to finish up my undergraduate degree in Information Sciences and Technology. As you might have guessed, IST is no CS degree. I came to school not knowing what I wanted to do. I was always kind of geeky growing up and I know a fair amount about tech so I decided to major in IST. My programming experience was very modest and I wasn't sure I even liked so I didn't think I...

I agree completely. New inputs beyond QWERTY need to be developed. The tricky part I think is getting people to use new methods. I think things like 8Pen are a good start, however.
Re:Build apps not businesses. on Tuesday December 28, 2010 @01:03PM (#2046151)
Open source does not equal free. There is simply no reason that something you pay for can't also allow you to extend the code or make changes yourself. Personally, I wish I could just pay for more things and not be blasted with advertising all of the time. I love it when apps such as Pandora give me that option.
Re:Next Generation 911 on Tuesday November 23, 2010 @01:47PM (#1934869)
I was actually discussing how outdated and old the 911 system is in America. It has been around in the same fashion for decades. I think there could be a lot of room for innovation to solve the problem by entrepreneurs, however I am not sure how much of the 911 system is tied up in government.
Most of the urban growth cited by the article is in developing countries. This is because they are beginning to industrialize and make things. America is not making as much any more and most people work white collar jobs. There is just not as much of a reason to conglomerate around a place of work like there is if the whole town works building cars, for example.

(To put up a disclaimer, I have just extrapolating this from what I think. I have not done a significant amount of research. There is a lot science fiction talking about this however, such as Daemon, Freedom TM, and even The Stars My Destination from way back. I also found this article that has some facts, despite being a little old. http://www.innserendipity.com/ruralren/rebound.html)

Even if you live in the boondocks today it is still only a 30 minute trip Wal-Mart. There just isn't any traffic.
Thanks a lot I will have to try this. I have started using todo lists and they have seemed to help. I do worry I might be slightly depressed. However, I think this problem is something different because I have not had any problems with meeting people and making new friends recently. Quite the contrary actually. Did you happen to smoke a lot of marijuana before this onset? I really think the intense reflection I do while high led to my conscious mind getting stuck somehow... I am just theorizing though.
Renewable energy sources such as solar and wind work much better in a distributed system in which individual homes and business are responsible for their own energy production. Besides energy, I think the shift toward healthier and organic food will lead to many people with land to have their own gardens and grow their own food.
I must be a counter example to the people with the problems this article describes. Maybe it is natural for a person about to graduate college with no idea what I am doing or where I am going but I can not stop thinking about my big problems. Moreover, my constant thought about myself is almost crippling and keeps me from actually doing anything. I do think that maybe this stems from the "self esteem" work this article talks about...
"The subconscious mind is a powerful problem solver. I believe this is why it is common to wake up in the morning with an unsolved problem, worked out."

Have you read anything about this? I do this all the time with my course work and I thought I was just strange. I can't tell you how many times I have banged my head against the wall with an assignment until I went to bed and then proceeded to get up an hour before it was due and finish it with no problem.

I really think that more and more people will start leaving the cities as communication continues to improve. The reason people conglomerated was so they could be in constant contact and physical space is not limiting factor to that any more.
Re:A Cautionary Tale from the Startup World on Sunday November 21, 2010 @01:27AM (#1926501)
The whole story seems like a big cliche.
Thanks a lot for the reply it is definitely pretty inspirational. My problem right now is that none of my math credits would transfer to CS so it would take about 3 years to complete a new BS in CS. I am just not sure if I could do that financially right now. I think I am going to look into going part time while I am working or maybe doing online classes.
