Show HN: Tinytowns, a small model to generate realistic sounding town names

https://quirkyagents.com/wizard/projects/tinytowns/

tinytowns makes up new town names in the style of real ones. It learned the letter patterns of 128,435 real place names: it was trained to guess the next letter of a place name as well as it can. It does not know which places exist, so most names it writes are new.Applications: - Make names for towns in games and on maps. - Make test data with place names that are not real. - Tell if a word...

So it's a bubble?

Every profile I open on X is building on AI. Has some company with 'ai' on it.

Is this the biggest free market experiment? On average (over time and geographies) is this leading to better quality of life?

There are various factors which can define success, but overall it should be quality of life, which itself includes wealth, health, peace, etc.

If I can ask everyone a simple question:

"Has AI improved your quality of life?"

50-50 -> we are still figuring it out, too early to be sure Yes -> technology with laisez faire is a win, humanity as a whole can be trusted to do good for itself No -> We cannot be trusted with unregulated tech

Maybe this is the biggest experiment after electricity which I think was in the Yes bucket.

Ask this to yourself, to people around you to understand where are we heading.

Re:Musk and Altman back Anthropic CEO on slowing AI down on Saturday September 12, 2026 @03:20PM (#49676138)
timing and speed of all this is definitely suspicious
agreed, seems like a coordinated attack to fence AI to a chosen few. Dangerous precedent.
Re:Anthropic CEO calls for the AI industry to slow down on Saturday September 12, 2026 @02:21PM (#49675414)
Interesting. But even Elon agrees now. Is it really a commercial intent or something deeper? Only non-speculative answer can come from someone inside these labs with nothing to gain or lose.

Closes person I can think of is Andrej (he agreed too).

Agreed by Sam and Elon. What happened suddenly for all of them to be on the same page?
Re:Anthropic CEO calls for the AI industry to slow down on Saturday September 12, 2026 @01:52PM (#49675080)
so does Sam. Does this mean there is seriousness to all this 'AI maybe dangerous for humanity' claim?

Interesting all major frontier models seemed down. What could this means?

How do you find 'your' OS community? I am new to the OS world, and reading GitHub projects gets overwhelming. Where do I start? How do I start? r Reading your post about the fun of building something together without the goal of only money, seems like the human connection we need in this world. But how do you find community you would enjoy?
