Re:A Letter to the American People on Saturday March 01, 2025 @05:35PM (#43224513)
All of this seems like deliberate destruction of America from the inside out by an ayn-rand worshipping, billionaire afrikaaner cabal (David Sacks, Elon Musk, roelof botha etc). Thoughtless and mindless cuts
Utter incompetence from senior leadership at Netflix. They had so much time to prepare for this.
To be honest, it's really hard to understand what Fleak does. For a minute, I thought it's a low-code way of deploying microservices/API endpoints. Maybe one end to end use case would help
Re:The manager's unbearable lack of endorphins on Sunday June 23, 2024 @01:31AM (#40765028)
I propose line managers be on-call 3-4 days a week so they continue to get that high and actually be useful :-)
Re:A16Z blogs are just glorified marketing on Monday April 01, 2024 @10:07PM (#39901645)
I mean it's not like they're claiming to be Gartner..who by the way, gasp, do paid marketing for "fair" rankings.
Re:"3 Body Problem" Is a Rare Species of Sci-Fi Epic on Monday March 18, 2024 @01:34PM (#39747338)
Such an amazing show and kudos to Netflix!
It's likely you're sharing it across households/relatives. Not sure I'd go to such lengths for something that costs as much as a Chipotle burrito tbh
Re:Netflix Plans to Cut Spending by $300M in 2023 on Friday May 12, 2023 @07:53PM (#35923963)
Disagree, total content spend the last 4 years has been ~18bn/year compared to ~500m/yr on all employee R&D. That's shows there's a content quality problem not a content underinvestment.
Re:Netflix Plans to Cut Spending by $300M in 2023 on Friday May 12, 2023 @06:26PM (#35923286)
Describing engineers as "fat and happy" is really derogatory. Their spend on tech employees is a tiny fraction of total content spend. Also, an even tinier fraction of what they spend on services like AWS. If they want to cut costs, there's a ton more low hanging fruit than letting people go. In fact, revenue per employee is the highest compared to other FAANG
Is this the right way to expose that hypocrisy though? If his goal was to truly bring society together and eradicate hate, I'm sure someone as smart as Adams could expose it in a more amicable and less polarizing way.
How quickly the tide turns in our industry..from massages at your desk to sitting on each other's laps. Hey they could perhaps still continue the massage to each other though.
Re:Does Your Office Have a Library? on Thursday February 16, 2023 @02:55PM (#34824885)
Microsoft HQ has an awesome library. Every big tech should have such a space for some quiet reading
Re:From $200/mo to $18k in 5 years as solo founder on Wednesday January 25, 2023 @03:21PM (#34523626)
How and where did you learn your designing skills? Would love to learn.
Re:Stanford's New Study Validates Ancient Breathing Technique on Tuesday January 24, 2023 @06:41PM (#34512258)
Not to digress but substack bas gotten quite annoying on mobile. Have to scroll through so much irrelevant BS to just get to the article, what the hell.
that's the definition of a strawman.
Having met him before, his clarity of thought just comes across in this paper as well. Some people are just wired with that talent that makes me so jealous. Reed is one of those people with high EQ and IQ (with the ability of handle his inner Elon diplomatically)
After seeing great folks laid off from FANG, i would also question if you should care so much about these things. IMO, us SWEs tend to care so much about writing idiomatic code for corporate overlords when in reality the effects of mildly sloppy code won’t be realized for a decade, it’s okay to leave it to the next poor soul that has to deal with it 10yrs down the lane and just enjoy your weekend :-)
Re:Netflix Gains 2.4M New Subscribers, Reversing Trend on Tuesday October 18, 2022 @10:07PM (#33256589)
Netflix has been in business for 25years now and competing with Amazon prime for close to ~12 years.. Of course on a long enough timeline survival zero yada yada..
Re:Cassandra at Apple: 1000s of Clusters, 300k Nodes, 100 PB on Saturday October 08, 2022 @08:39PM (#33137358)
And not to mention, for 90% of the use cases out there Postgres or MySql on aurora or whatever will be more than enough
Re:From Burned Out Tech CEO to Amazon Warehouse Associate on Monday October 03, 2022 @04:27PM (#33073209)
Hey Peter Gibbons already did this. Time to burn the whole damn warehouse down, Milton.
Indeed, meant to say he should acquire this if he's at all serious about the autonomous/robo taxi thing becoming a reality but we all know it's hot-air for the foreseeable future. But kind of the premise based on which these companies thought their unit economics would eventually work out.
Lyft seems like a great candidate for Tesla to acquire and eventually replace with their autonomous fleet. But Elon is busy winning the culture wars atm.
Re:AppLovin offers to buy Unity Software in $17.5 bln deal on Tuesday August 09, 2022 @02:43PM (#32402129)
Applovin..The company you build after watching Superbad while high too many times I guess
Very true. Though less “prestigious”, the most fun I ever had was actually working as an SDET in the beginning of my career at Microsoft in Azure. I would spend hours dreaming up corner cases on how to break dev code in a distributed systems setting and came up with (for that time) quite a few unique frameworks that helped catch bugs that would’ve otherwise slipped through the usual unit, functional and smoke test archetypes. Unfortunately, I believe this job function has been removed entirely within MS
Re:Why am I no longer qualified to be a Brex customer? on Thursday June 16, 2022 @10:19PM (#31773440)
Give away free money
Yes, we run iceberg and it’s pretty thorough
We have some that make way more than that in my FAANG company
Very well said.

To the OP: if you really are a good programmer, then mastering LC is just a matter of time and effort and really, the problems aren't that hard. You're also hired at most companies to solve problems; not just be a code monkey. It's a matter of interest and motivation not whether you're good at LC or not.

LC is the best proxy we have for aptitude and general problem solving ability at this time. So best to suck it up and grind.

>As noted in my recent book Extraterrestrial, I do not enjoy science fiction stories because the story lines often violate the laws of physics

And there it is. Shame on the Scientific American

So the next breed of terrorists will likely be those who’ll take over the flight avionics while on the plane? Laptops to be banned soon
