I heard resentment towards remote workers based on their perceived effect on rents when vacationing in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica recently.
Biological necessities for life != institutions that a majority of people participate in within most historical/cultural contexts.

There have always been adults who never paired off into romantic partnerships. Not so with breathing.

Seems like you're making assumptions about the way the causation flows here.
Funny, it comes off as tongue in cheek and charming to me. To each their own I suppose!
this is inherent to fractional reserve banks and maturity transformation. any bank would be vulnerable if there's a bank run. this is a basic thing to understand before making claims on this issue imho.
It clarifies the point he's making. It's not the point itself.

So then what's the problem?
Counterpoint: yes?

what's the connection between having an office in a quasi-hemi-fascist state and layoffs?
Seems like people are criticizing this because it's pitched as an alternative to normal tourism. Just wanted to point out that Chris Arnade has done quite compelling photo journalism based on his way of engaging with communities, so what might seem like non sequitors or edge lord stuff might be in service of an implicit goal of his that most travelers don't share. Not that he does himself any favors with some of the framing.

Highly recommend his book Dignity. https://www.amazon.com/Dignity-Seeking-Respect-Back-America/...

Based on how this gets operationalized in argumentation, 99% of people would not. Being confronted with Singer led me to reject ethics, not to become more ethical.

Worldviews don't win points for being expensive and industrious. But my point, had you seen past your mood affiliation, was that explaining the origin of a phenomenon doesn't tell you its value.
Re:Why read Dostoevsky? A programmer's perspective on Saturday October 01, 2022 @10:26AM (#33046791)
I'm saying you're not engaging with the substance of his point.

If I were to say, "America had a negative impact in geopolitics when it invaded Iraq," it's like you responded with "I'm sorry, but that just seems anti-American."

Re:Why read Dostoevsky? A programmer's perspective on Saturday October 01, 2022 @09:59AM (#33046626)
This treats arguments like opaque tokens where we know in advance which are good and bad, and need to make sure we have lots of good and few bad. But actually arguments have content and to know whether they are good or bad, we have to engage with them.

And language is just a tool to hunt better and coordinate distribution of berries. And human consciousness is just a tool to model other minds to negotiate better. Nothing to see here.
Notwithstanding the replication crisis, "grit" is a social psychology term that has been popularized in recent years. It's presented as a desirable trait for lifetime success. I think attributing this perceived relative debasement to a company is a bit much.
Re:Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B on Friday September 16, 2022 @11:33AM (#32867507)
It seems like the model here is just a series of temporary alternatives (if we're lucky, creating value isn't easy). But people need software to be long-term viable to invest in learning and locking into the ecosystem. Seems good for the founders though.

I would call that an extraordinary claim.

they were viciously attacking me for my risky behavior in light of dastardly drivers, I was merely defending my honor, sir or madame.

I would say 80% of cyclists in Denver did this anyway, so at least there the education is well under way!

If you can't assess an intersection at 5 mph with good visibility on a bike then that seems wise.

If I have a log across a river, most people with decent balance can reasonably expect to cross it. Therefore, adding crocodiles to the river will not make anyone less likely to use the log bridge.
It's not really an informative example. You're not losing your job in this case for emotional harm. It's because you insulted your boss. You could lose your job even if he didn't care.

If you had to let an employee go and caused even more emotional harm (brought on by their no longer being employed), you wouldn't receive a reprisal.

Why are you pointing out that speech sometimes is reasonable to punish? How does this clarify the question of whether we have become too punitive regarding political and controversial social speech.

no chilling effects here..
That's exactly the point that was being made to you. The debate here is precisely what is reasonable, and what is harm.
Re:Meditation and the Unconscious on Monday January 24, 2022 @04:59PM (#30064641)
Can you cite? I'm interested in this idea but it's unclear where he discusses meditation as such, rather than things like consciousness and introspection?

Which part is completely fake? Living paycheck to paycheck? A $500 cost? Or being able to come up with $15 within a month?

Are you under the impression that nobody ever uses credit facilities with high interest without spiraling into bankruptcy?
