Re:96 MacBook Pro’s in one server rack on Wednesday July 29, 2015 @06:38AM (#9967658)
Potential reason is that they need see how their tests affect screen burn. They mention they specifically need Mac hardware so this could be why they specifically need retina screens.
Re:Show HN: Rubik's Cube on Wednesday July 08, 2015 @08:33AM (#9851102)
For those interested in getting a sub 60 second solve time then try learning CFOP. http://badmephisto.com has some very good resources to get you started.

With more practice and learning the correct algorithms then a sub 15 second solve is achievable.

CFOP stands for (C) = Cross = Cross on bottom layer - (F) = F2L = First 2 Layers = Solve bottom two layer edge and corner pieces at once - (O) = OLL = Orient last layer - (P) = PLL = Permute last layer

I agree I think this approach would appeal more to me as a user. I'd also set the options as:

1) Happy to donate 2) No, and don't ask again

Re:What one may find in robots.txt on Monday May 18, 2015 @06:50AM (#9563661)
I don't understand why a user would access a randomly created directory that is only mentioned in the robots.txt file. Can you explain as to why you'd think they'd stumble across this?
How about instead you discussu a SLA (Service Level Agreement). For example you agree that emails / calls are to be acknowledged or responded within 1 hour during 9-5 Mon-Fri for £/$XXX per month.

You could go a step further any have different levels, so for a higher monthly rate you'd respond within 30 minutes, etc etc.

Re:Email Regex that works 99.99% on Sunday February 22, 2015 @10:51AM (#9089742)
Any idea on who is responsible for this micro-site?

I find it strange that there's no information on the author, sources, references, attribution, or credits on the page at all (other than the WordPress theme attribution).

Re:How the iPad Went from Massive to ‘Meh’ in 5 Short Years on Wednesday January 28, 2015 @03:54AM (#8958795)
In a way I'm in a pretty similar situation. I have a desktop for my day job, and an iPad mini 1 (1st gen) for evening browsing (so that I don't get sucked into work if I use the desktop machine).

There's been 3 updates to the iPad mini since mine, and felt zero need to upgrade. I'm very happy with my ipad, and most certaintly don't think it's meh, it's just apart of my evening cycle that I don't even think about any more.

Re:Moonpig.com Vulnerability – Exposes customer data on Monday January 05, 2015 @06:17PM (#8841912)
Lots of users on Twitter saying to delete your account, but is there any proof that this will exclude your account from the API?
Re:iCloud Apple ID Brute Forcer on Friday January 02, 2015 @07:48AM (#8826568)
Totally, but in terms of readability for proof on concept, I can see why the author chose PHP. I think the repo was more for showing the vulnerability rather than an actual tool that could be used right out the box.
Re:Show HN: Blip – Web Audio looping and sampling library on Tuesday October 28, 2014 @03:32PM (#8523058)
I'm sure others will find this reminiscent of the Minecraft in-game sounds, which makes me wonder whether they have similar logic to create on the fly, or just a pre-recorded looped audio file.

I'm assuming the later due to resources.

Re:iPad Mini 3 on Thursday October 16, 2014 @04:20PM (#8467415)
There wasn't a real update other than the TouchID, why would they update the iPad Air but not the Mini, in terms of chips and cameras?
Re:iPad Mini 3 on Thursday October 16, 2014 @04:06PM (#8467318)
I for one was hoping for an upgrade to this range in particular, and the fleeting mention in the stream was a bit shocking.

I have the 1st Gen mini, and didn't see enough to upgrade to the retina, and was hoping for a chip upgrade and camera upgrade, but alas nothing.

I almost feel as if there are 2 outcomes here; 1) the mini gets an update in March-ish and has some kind of A8Y chip especially for the mini, or 2) that is the last update we ever see for the mini

Re:Hacker News API on Tuesday October 07, 2014 @03:02PM (#8423232)
I built a scraper around 3 years ago (been through a few usernames since then), and I've had to change it once 3 months ago because the HTML output added quotes around HTML attributes.

Even though it's read only, I'll continue to use my scraper rather than the API simple because it's one request, rather than the API would require one request for the top IDs and then one call per story, so it would be 31 calls instead of just 1.

Unless I'm missing something, it seems fairly poorly designed for top stories, and non existent for new stories.

------

EDIT: Looks like I missed the text about updating to a new rendering system in 3 weeks time, and to iterate designs faster to allow mobile friendly theming. Looks Like I WILL be updating to use the API

Re:Mou 1.0 coming early 2015 on Friday October 03, 2014 @11:32AM (#8405952)
I agree, in its current form I don't have any issues regarding bugs or stability, but assuming Yosemite support will be needed some time soon, as well as potentially a Mac App Store integration.

Other than that, I'd say it's a good candidate for a 1.0.0 release, so I'm not sure exactly what the need for $20k is, unless it's to reimburse for time already spent?

Re:Mou 1.0 coming early 2015 on Friday October 03, 2014 @04:06AM (#8404684)
I've used Mou since very early on, and have donated to the developer also. I use Mou every single day, without fail, and so glad to see that it's getting attention again.

My only issue is that the app has been fairly dormant for several months, maybe even up to a year, and I'm not sure what's prompted the urgency to finish and release Mou. It's come such a long way gradually and I hope it isn't rushed at the end.

I also hope it'll be taken in the same direction as originally intended, rather than to extract every last penny out of it. Of course, it's great to see Chen getting the sales he deserves, but I really hope he keeps in mind his original vision.

Re:EveryoneAPI on Tuesday September 30, 2014 @01:56PM (#8389799)
Looks like that page was added after my comment, and before yours. Google Cache shows the link in the footer not present 3 days ago. [1]

Also, I notice you've only ever commented on 3 different HN topics all of which relate to this service, so I'm going to hazard a guess and say you're linked in some way to this project, and thought you'd add the terms link, and post this comment in an attempt to discredit my comment.

No terms and conditions, no privacy policy, no about us, no way of knowing whether these details were lawfully obtained.

After some digging, looks like it's by these guys: https://www.telephonyresearch.com/

Also looks to be a spin off of their other product: https://www.opencnam.com/

Re:Testing a way for you to make purchases on Twitter on Monday September 08, 2014 @10:28AM (#8284911)
Because it opens the doors for referrals and sponsors.

Personally I think it's a good idea, for the brands and people I follow I know I'll only be getting shown the 'Buy' button for targeted items. However, I know my friends and family follow people who are clearly paid to promote a product.

Just to give you an example, Mark Wright is a reality TV celebrity here in England, and it's clear he is paid to promote diet supplements. if you check out his tweets you'll see that he's always retweeting, and taking pics of them (https://twitter.com/MarkWright_).

At the moment, conversion metrics are quite hard to get, however imagine if each one had a Buy button. It would be super easy to see which tweets leads to sales, which in turn will lead to a more aggressive sales pitch in order to bump up your conversions and maximise on referrals, as they'd likely to change to a percentage of sales rather than a fixed fee now that conversations are recordable.

There used to be a thing that you have to disclose your affiliation (think it was cmp.ly) but don't believe it ever got enforced, much like the EU Cookie Law, kind of.

Don't get me wrong, in my feed I trust people I follow and this won't happen. But for casual tweeters, it's just too easy to be exploited.

Re:LogMeIn has acquired Meldium (YC W13) on Thursday September 04, 2014 @09:31AM (#8268085)
Same for me too, added to the fact I've never heard of Meldium
Both are by the same person, think of it as a free v1, or a paid for and feature rich v2
What are your thoughts on not uprooting before you have a formal offer of employment, and a contract signed. Personally, I wouldn't put any wheels in motion until I had a contract in case something like this were to happen, and then if it did they'd be breaking it.

I'm not saying it's this persons fault, but I don't necessarily think saying the founders are not good guys (aka bad guys), I think it's more about being assertive and protecting yourself.

In my experience, I've never handed in notice without a formal offer and that's for local jobs. If you add moving abroad to that, then there are definitely some extra steps needed to protect yourself.

I sincerely wish you the best in finding somewhere else, and it's a horrible situation, but if you had a similar offer in a month, would you do it differently?

Re:EtherCalc: Open-source web spreadsheet on Monday August 04, 2014 @09:24AM (#8131604)
I'm really impressed, by far the best open source web based implementation of spreadsheets that I've come across.

An area which I'm struggling with is the formatting; and this was because I didn't see the 'Save to: A1:A20' at the top, I expected the button to be below or expected it to save when I changed the values.

Other than that, it's really good!

First thing I noticed is how much content is missing from disabling JavaScript. I know I know, "who disables JavaScript these days," just saying...
Re:Hemingway App now available on Wednesday July 23, 2014 @01:39PM (#8075681)
If trailers are to films as screenshots are to software, then demos are to software as what exactly are to films?

I think your argument is defunct, and I don't think it's bad to expect a demo, no matter how expensive or inexpensive a bit of software may be.

Re:Show HN: Please Don't Rob Me on Tuesday July 22, 2014 @05:23AM (#8067990)
IMO, the how to protect yourself should be more prominent and perhaps on the first slide/page.

I stopped using Instagram because I couldn't keep up with me post-dating my activities. It was more of a chore to remember to post a week or so later and 'pretend' I'm doing such activity now, instead I just didn't bother sharing.

I got a brand new car a few months back, and even though I wanted to share a pic (not to gloat) I knew it would be easy to track down, and due to where I live it's easy to see whether I was home or not. Not a rare car by any means, but how many '14 plate cars in particular colour in a particular model do you see in any one area? Matching cars could be 5-10 miles apart easy

Does anyone else think like this?

Re:Bitstamped on Friday June 27, 2014 @05:12AM (#7953283)
No no, I read. I'm just wondering in 10 years time whether the blockchain ledger will still be available, or still within it's current ownership. In my opinion the nature of using this kind of service is that you may not need it until many years ahead, some could argue that bitcoin may not be around then, or may not be a in strong position; people may lose interest etc.

Not asking rhetorical questions, just seeing other peoples thoughts.

Re:Bitstamped on Friday June 27, 2014 @04:46AM (#7953211)
Impending lawsuit from THE SOCIAL NETWORK...

No, in all seriousness I think the key to services such as these is trust. Trust that no matter what the company won't falter and nip into the database and change a few dates.

When people actually need this service, they'll really need it and I'm wondering without an accredited and independent survey of the site and company (as well an employees) whether this will be worth anything legally and in a court of law?

I don't know

Re:SSL and PHP Streams, Part 1 on Thursday June 26, 2014 @11:33AM (#7950162)
file_get_contents only works on external URLS if the fopen_wrapper have been enabled in the PHP.ini. Most the shared hosting I've come across have this disabled, so it would show an error.

cURL is the functions you need to 'get' a URL, not file_get_contents.

I don't argue that there are two meanings on the word, but the true definition as per Oxford dictionaries is clear that a hacker is a cracker, but there is another informal definition.

All I'm saying is that surely it's not only the media that need to change, but also all definitions in general?
