Googlers that were around when Vic Gundotra was a big player love trashing him. I was surprised when this blog described him in mixed and maybe even positive terms.
Re:Why doctors in America earn so much on Thursday November 02, 2023 @03:03AM (#38109917)
Source for your first claim? All the charts I’ve seen online (see [1] for an example) show that the other Anglophone countries you’ve listed now have more doctors per capita than the US. (It looks like this was not the case in the past.)

Making tech and gaming more inclusive for women isn’t something that just benefits women — as your comment shows it can benefit men as well.
Re:2023 Nobel Prize in economics awarded to Claudia Goldin on Monday October 09, 2023 @05:57PM (#37825986)
> He explained that "Nobel despised people who cared more about profits than society's well-being", saying that "There is nothing to indicate that he would have wanted such a prize", and that the association with the Nobel prizes is "a PR coup by economists to improve their reputation".

To be fair I would definitely consider Goldin’s work the kind of work that improves society and hence that Nobel would want awarded.

Thanks for pointing this out — I actually assumed the linked article was a different one[1] which implied that the third set could replace dentures:

> When treatment of teeth is no longer possible due to severe cavities or erosion of the dental sockets, known as pyorrhea, people lose them and need to rely on dental appliances such as dentures. The ability to grow third-generation teeth could change that. "In any case, we're hoping to see a time when tooth-regrowth medicine is a third choice alongside dentures and implants," Takahashi said.

Humans have three sets of tooth buds, the third of which most people never use. The version of this treatment for adults would grow this last set.
Humans have 3 sets of tooth buds. Most people never use the third set. For adults this treatment would aim to regrow the third set.

I think it’s because focusing on the pipeline problem focuses on the parts of hiring that a company doesn’t have control over. Those decisions often happen in high school and tech companies don’t have direct influence in these decisions.

Instead, companies are better off focusing on making the later parts of the pipeline less leaky. Minorities tend to leave tech at a higher rate than average due to factors the company has some control over.

Re:Google executive fired after female boss groped him on Monday January 30, 2023 @10:46AM (#34581205)
The quote from the spokesperson at the very end really makes me think that this situation might stranger than it seems:

In a statement to The Post, a spokesman for Miller denied the accusations against his client. “This lawsuit is a fictional account of events filled with numerous falsehoods, fabricated by a disgruntled ex-employee, who was senior to Ms. Miller at Google,” the spokesman said. “Ms. Miller never made any ‘advance’ toward Mr. Olohan, which witnesses can readily corroborate.”

Re:Get Running with Couch to 5K on Monday January 02, 2023 @10:02AM (#34218588)
Yes, this is exactly the pattern you see in the r/c25k subreddit. Lots of people hit a wall (usually around week 5 or 6, where you start running for longer stretches of time) because they’re running too fast. The most unintuitive part of this program is pacing yourself.
Re:Which emoji scissors close? (2020) on Thursday October 27, 2022 @11:19PM (#33367248)
I think you’re right that the turtle one is the first (or at least one of the first) but there are lots of emoji reviews - see https://www.reddit.com/r/EmojiReview/#sort=top;t=all or https://www.tumblr.com/emojiratingcollection. Most of them rate emojis only aesthetically. I wanted to only cover reviews that included details about how realistic the emojis in its category are.

> In 2022 I kind of just assume the world is fairly gender-less in most respects

Given that women’s participation in the labor force in the US passed 50% in the 1970s (well within living memory!), this is pretty optimistic :)

Yep. One study^1 estimates that zoning and land use restrictions across the country leads to an (unnecessary) increase in housing costs worth 2% of the US GDP (about $400 billion).

Re:Why Men Are Hard to Help on Saturday October 01, 2022 @06:49PM (#33050908)
That’s not the full context on the data OK Cupid released.

Men tended to rate women in a normal distribution, but they also mostly messaged women in the uppermost range of attractiveness.

Women tended to rate men more harshly, rating most men below average attractiveness, but they also tended to message those "below average" men regardless of their assessment.

Re:A dirty dish by the sink can be a big marriage problem on Wednesday April 13, 2022 @01:32PM (#31017536)
I agree that the thoughts and feelings of other people in general are difficult to predict. But a person you marry is often someone you spend a lot of time around and hence whose thoughts and feelings can be predicted to some extent - because you see them in different situations, then see their reactions and talk to them about their thoughts and feelings.

In this specific case, the author denies that the consequences existed:

> But that doesn’t make sense, I thought. I’m not trying to hurt her; therefore, she shouldn’t feel hurt.

Re:A dirty dish by the sink can be a big marriage problem on Wednesday April 13, 2022 @01:00PM (#31017113)
Exactly. If you intend to throw a ball to your dog but accidentally break a vase as a result, does your original intention absolve you from the consequences of your actions?
“Seeing like a state” taught me what high modernism is and it’s pitfalls (since I - and I imagine many readers of HN - are already familiar with its strengths and achievements e.g. modern medicine).

Poor Economics is a book in a similar vein that talks about how policies that sound like they would be effective can backfire.

(I am a software engineer and found both of these books approachable and interesting.)

Re:I love you, Hacker News, but you’re toxic on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @10:28PM (#30356036)
The vast majority of HN comments care much more about being right than being kind, and this has also been my experience within the tech industry in general. I doubt that the author thinks that unlimited kindness at the expense of correctness is the ideal.
Re:I love you, Hacker News, but you’re toxic on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @10:14PM (#30355958)
Yes, if you want to say something reprehensible it’s fine as long as you say it in a long-winded and impartial-sounding fashion involving lots of “logic” and “objectivity” à la Slate Star Codex.

No, it’s a medical term that just means one condition often appears with another condition (e.g. maladaptive daydreaming often occurs with OCD).
It is easy to believe that “all government is bad” when the only government you’ve interacted with is the US government. Thanks for highlighting a counter example.

Re:Everything You Know About Obesity Is Wrong on Sunday March 21, 2021 @07:01PM (#26534953)
I agree that the headline is sensationalised and exaggerated, and that despite the headline the article itself is actually interesting and changed my mind about a couple of things. I think it describes a fat person’s perspective on and experience with the medical profession well.

I would assume that “fructose as a sweetener” means fructose separated from fruits and vegetables and added to other foods, such as adding high fructose corn syrup to cookies.

+1000

It’s just way easier to help women achieve success in a way that helps capitalists than it is to push for better working conditions for parents. But pushing for better working conditions isn’t impossible either, and the US is an extreme outlier in how hostile it is to working parents.

Some strategies for achieving this include meatless Mondays, weekday vegetarian meals or sticking to vegetarian meals at home.
