Re:How I Use Git Worktrees on Friday July 26, 2024 @02:32AM (#41076279)
For anyone who wants to work on (non conflicting) changes at the same time, using a UI, I can recommend Gitbutler. Here you can check out multiple branches at the same time (e.g. do a development workflow at the same time as a bugfix). It is a little bit confusing at first, but I like it.

https://gitbutler.com/

I would love to get more details on the linear-integer solve methodology, as it sounds impressive. Was the problem formulated to also work as a linear problem where the binary or integer variables were first treated as positive non-integer variables, and then checked using branch-and-cut (That's how I would do it)? Or did you do something differently?

Fortunately, we found a different plan of attack: one
which allowed the integer-linear-programming solver to
explore the problem space more efficiently and find
optimal solutions faster. What previously took an hour,
  now took 0.2 seconds.
Re:Escaped robot holds up traffic in Russia on Friday June 17, 2016 @07:08AM (#11921915)
This sounds like a (more or less well executed) PR move. As this robot has wheels and very little clearance above ground, it looks like the robot would even have difficulties climbing stairs. Thus "escapes" seems like an exaggeration.
I did not identify how this service differs from using multiple SIM cards with the same number, which I can get for a small fee (below 10€) from my provider (in Germany).

Does anybody know how details about the specific implementation?

Re:Ohmu – View space usage in your terminal on Monday October 12, 2015 @07:46AM (#10373880)
For those of you who prefer using a GUI (and are using a windows computer): A similar program to Ohmu called "Spacesniffer" displays the space folders and files use, as well as free space in a treemap. It has helped me a lot to quickly see how big some folders are.

Did anybody find out how podcasts are integrated into Spotify? What interests me is if there will be a dynamic playlist of unlistened episodes. This would be great, as I don't know any good podcast applications for Windows.

EDIT: Spelling.

Anybody who spent some time on https://community.spotify.com will agree that Spotify does not give a damn about the opinions of their most passionate users (the ones that actually want to improve the experience by participating in the forum!). Especially since Spotify significantly increased font size and line spacing for no obvious reason [1] and no option to change it back even when this was a (from my perspective) widley demanded feature, I have lost confidence in the community process.

Alt-tabbing into Spotify and then pressing space does not pause the playback on my Windows 7 system either...
Re:Arq for Windows finally available on Sunday May 10, 2015 @09:47AM (#9519893)
Hi, do you have an estimate when the SFTP option will be available in the Windows version? I have heard it exists in the OSX version.
Re:Genetic Algorithm Walkers on Monday January 19, 2015 @02:42PM (#8913633)
This looks like fun! It seems that the copied champions are simulated in every run. As long there is no random influence you can probably skip this simulation, as the simulation of the champions is also most likely the most CPU intensive.

EDIT: Grammar.

Re:The physics of mosh pits on Monday November 03, 2014 @04:05PM (#8553495)
Be sure to klick through to the full simulator [0]. Here you can adjust values, steer the crowd (using a,w,s,d) and see the results at the same time.

Re:Show HN: Speeding up PostgreSQL through vectorized execution on Wednesday October 08, 2014 @05:41AM (#8426071)
Great article. I am not a real programmer (but regular user of Postgres for scientific data storage) and do not get every detail. But do these changes have a chance of being implemented in a future version of Postgres or are these improvements tied to CitusDB?
Re:Podcasts are back and making money on Friday September 26, 2014 @02:51PM (#8374216)
Here are some recommendations:

* "Küchenradio" one of the oldest German podcasts. The authors visit and interview people or interesting places, or just talk, mainly around Berlin. The podcast is uncut even in interview situatons. (http://www.kuechenstud.io/kuechenradio/)

* Basically all podcasts from Metaebene. Especially "Freakshow" (the team talks about technology and apple etc.), "CRE2 (very long (2-3h) interviews about technology, culture and society), and "Fokus Europa" (about Europe). The Author Tim Pritlove is probably Germany's most famous podcaster. (http://metaebene.me/podcasts/)

* "Sanft und Sorgfältig". The weekly radio show of comedian Jan Böhmermann and musician Olli Schulz, talking about the week and various other subjects. (http://www.radioeins.de/archiv/podcast/zwei_alte_hasen.html)

* "Das ARD Radiofeature". In depth documentation for public radio stations about various topics. Well produced. (http://www.ard.de/home/radio/das_ARD_radiofeature/272100/ind...)

Re:Podcasts are back and making money on Friday September 26, 2014 @11:24AM (#8373089)
In Germany many podcasts use Flattr.com (http://flattr.com/) as a form of microdonations. While this service can be used for basically anything that has a website, podcasts tend to make up a significant portion of the flattrs, it seems. Interestingly in the US sponsored podcasts seem to be dominant, while in Germany the ad-free and donation based form (or funded by public radio) is probably the majority.

Does anybody know the reason why microdonations never really gained traction in the US?

Once you know that a service like this exists you want it. I won't sign up, because I am unsure about giving another company access to my mail account. Do you know about a similar solution that can be run on an own server?
Re:Bürocontainer Preise on Monday September 22, 2014 @08:49AM (#8350307)
Being a relatively infrequent poster I cannot flag this submission, but it looks fishy. It links to a company selling offices made of containers as well as other buildings. Not sure what the HN aspect of this submisison is. As the submitter's username is also the company's name I suspect it is spam.
Re:Show HN: Pi Approximation using Monte Carlo on Sunday August 10, 2014 @02:57AM (#8159079)
Nice visualization. After playing with it for a while, the number never really converged to Pi. The value even reached 3.135 after 10000 iterations. Do you have any measure how "stable" this method is? Or how many iterations are needed to be relatively certain that the first n digits won't change anymore?
Re:Recommending music on Spotify with deep learning on Wednesday August 06, 2014 @04:04AM (#8141503)
I think that this data is only local to each computer. I use spotify on two computers and the phone: The history tab does not sync between these devices.
If this is true then Microsoft will have a hard time convincing the majority of potential users to switch to OneDrive. Although I can imagine possible use cases altering data without user interaction is unacceptable. What if you had a git repository stored there? (Yes I know this belongs somewhere else but some people might want to do it regardless) Although Dropbox apparently looks at the data to create previews for the Website etc. I have never experienced altered data.
Re:Windows Management Framework V5 Preview on Friday April 04, 2014 @07:03AM (#7530484)
I have been using Chocolatey for a while now without any regret. OneGet probably won't match apt-get at first but this step is definitively in the right direction. If all software providers would provide their repository information updating programs would finally be a one-klick (or one command)-operation.
Re:WhatsApp to launch voice calling in the second quarter on Monday February 24, 2014 @09:33AM (#7290930)
Actually I am quite happy that background processes are relatively restricted on iOS. When an incoming call is received the corresponding push notification should be fast enough. If all clients on my phone had to talk to their server individually the battery would be empty in no time.
Re:Project Tango on Thursday February 20, 2014 @05:34PM (#7274165)
Same here...
The concept and screenshots look great! Do you have last.fm support? Because (for me): If it doesn't scrobble it's not a music player :-)

Edit: Just downloaded the app. It doesn't scrobble but otherwise the app works as advertised. Thanks for posting here on HN! Not only music discovery but also app discovery is hard sometimes.

Re:Pull to refresh. For the web on Monday February 25, 2013 @05:15PM (#5282231)
Great idea. I catch myself scrolling up before refreshing relatively often! It would really be genius if the page didn't completely reload everytime but only if it really changed.
