Re:Ask HN: What do you eat, hackers? on Monday October 25, 2010 @02:25PM (#1830922)
I like to cook and spend a fair amount of time in my kitchen. I eat a lot of yogurt: full-fat and no flavorings. Lots of beans: garbanzo, fava, kidney beans etc. Rice, eggs, lentils, vegetables and couscous.

I also bake a fair bit. Here is a dead simple cake recipe: http://cixa.org/about.php.

I have a pretty high metabolism so I snack during the day on fruit: pears, bananas, apples. Dried fruit: cashew-nut, almonds, walnuts, prunes.

I have increasingly become become vegetarian over the last year after having eaten fish and meat for the last decade. In a previous life I was vegan for sixteen years.

This has less to do with calorie-counting or religious dogma than the gradual awareness of things; mindfulness, if you will.

The manner in which meat and fish are raised, butchered, transported and sold in the west is disgusting. This has led me to eat a mostly vegetarian diet.

This reminds me of the opening scene in Juzo Itami's <i>Minbo-no Onna</i>. Nobuko Miyamoto's character does something similar with the yakuza.

No.
Re:Polyglot extension for Chrome - Learn a new language on Wednesday September 08, 2010 @09:09AM (#1671706)
Language acquisition is scrappy. Immersion, cinema, osmosis, books, tapes, Wikipedia, supermarkets, recipes on soup cans, ATM interfaces, ingredient lists, the street - whatever works.

This extension probably works best for those with some degree of acquaintance with the target language, if only for the errors you spot.

Ask HN: What hosting do you use?

I use nearlyfreespeech.net and while I like their cleanliness and honesty and low cost, I find the lack of Django/Zope etc and perpetual php safe mode to be annoying.Could you recommend low cost hosts who are honest and will let me run what I want?

Re: Fillum Fallam, a film short printed by hand on Friday July 30, 2010 @09:24AM (#1561021)
Three months ago I made some photos in my toilette, exposing photographic paper to the screen of my IBM R51.

I called them 'laptopograms'.

Two weeks ago I launched a Kickstarter project called 'Fillum Fallam'. This is a film short to-be.

I intend to shoot it on 16mm and print each frame by hand. The short itself revolves around themes of food and film.

These ~3 minutes of film / ~3000 frames will take up the next ~8 months of my life.

I am trying to crowdsource the budget via Kickstarter. Do take a look: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cixa/fillum-fallam-fi-al...

Ask HN: What Thinkpad should I get?

I run Maverick Meerkat on an IBM R51 and I'm thinking of getting a new laptop. I have looked into the X301 and the T410.Having spoken to a couple of users of Maverick on the X301 (with the SSD), they have recommended the T410 with the i7 processor.Do you have an i7 based Thinkpad or an x301 and you run Ubuntu on it? What have your experiences been? What I'm looking for is something bombproof....
