Is there any Silicon Valley personality left who has an unquestionable/undamaged credibility/legacy ?
Could it have anything to do with the fact that the UK is a much older democracy ? ( the first English parliament was called in 1295 )

as far as comms goes - nothing can speed it up - but yes the idea of using relays makes comms more reliable/repairable
Re:Starlight (Interstellar Probe) on Wednesday October 12, 2022 @11:20AM (#33178276)
perhaps that can be overcome by a train/succession of such probes relaying the signals over shorter distances ?

Software is hard but more specifically it's human behavior - coordination and communication between contributors and teams to be exact
Re:Ask HN: What are you doing this weekend? on Saturday September 24, 2022 @11:47AM (#32963795)

I'm with you

although the language of that Brookings article is obscure ( possibly deliberately )

it seems like he's nitpicking rather than acknowledging something's deeply wrong.

plus it's strange the way he quotes himself in 3rd person in the article he himself wrote

Re:Thomas Piketty’s Radical Plan to Redistribute Wealth on Monday September 05, 2022 @02:02PM (#32727193)
land and natural resources are limited in supply

they're also a big part of how humans fulfil the basic necessities of life

why should this "ownership" gained centuries ago through violence or social rank, be the reason for the average person of today having pay 50% of their wages in tribute to the descendant of that original conqueror/noble ?

the implication certainly is that if you don't make mistakes, missteps, work hard and have talent - in other words if you are full of merit - you'll assuredly end up in a good place

sounds like saying we live in a meritocracy

Re:Thomas Piketty’s Radical Plan to Redistribute Wealth on Monday September 05, 2022 @01:24PM (#32726770)
"no-dissapointment-in-my-life-is-ever-my-fault trap"

I am one of those people who certainly missed the boat due to my own missteps, mistakes, lack of motivation

But let's talk about those who don't/didn't have the favourable circumstances and opportunities I had/have

Is not being able to afford / be-accepted-for a life changing college degree that person's fault 50% of the time ? is it their parents' fault ? is it the grandparents' fault that the parents weren't better off ? if so ... where does this blame game stop ? at some point govt/society needs to step in and give you a boost regardless of your background

debatably, inheritance & land ownership are well executed systemic conspiracies

mistakes, missteps, lack of motivation, are all fine - but "lack of ability" ? you're arguing against yourself there - if there is such a thing as lack of ability - that's certainly a terrible reason to disqualify a person from having their basic needs met

Does a petition/campaign in Mark's favour have any hope of getting Google to restore his account ?

the most frustrating question I have - Why isn't Google restoring his account despite him being cleared by the police ? Why are they not even explaining this ?

Yes, especially in visual form.

Language is often a big handicap - it is linear, inefficient and usually biased towards some worldview (imo)

Re:Divorce does funny things on Tuesday November 16, 2021 @01:14AM (#29237463)
This. All the "progress" of the past 100 years has come through exploitative labor, fossil fuel, plastics, reckless mining, massive farming (incl. meat)

a tiny extent, through technology, but that too via undercompensated labor of scientists

safeguards are of course necessary in any system.

here it can be lifeboats, backup hooks, spacecraft with backup thrusters, separate mechanisms for moving people vs stuff, and potentially many more

Fair points, I don't have data refuting them.

But FWIW - in India many drivers have been lured into taking a car loan with the promise of high returns, so as to boost supply, which results in net negative income at the end of the day/week/month, despite having worked like a machine

I would like to see this as a formalization of the fact that companies of the following type need more time if they are to grow ethically

companies like Uber, Amazon etc - that subsidize services at the expense of service providers (e.g. drivers, warehouse workers)

Re:Kyshtym Disaster on Wednesday October 20, 2021 @11:53AM (#28932223)
even if we agree that safety is guaranteed.. there is the fact that it would take a lot of dirty energy to build all the reactors and to source the uranium.. that is.. potential payoff has a upper bound unlike in fusion
Re:Kyshtym Disaster on Wednesday October 20, 2021 @11:49AM (#28932174)
IMO the energy needed to manufacture, install and operate all the wind turbines and PV panels would approx cancel out the benefits of renewables ( do we even have that quantity of raw materials readily available ? or would it take an asteroid or two ? )
agree that neutrality is a tale - in trying to emit less, we emit more for the short term

its probably not an exaggeration to say that all the conveniences, innovations and economic growth of the past 100 years rely on fossil derived energy to various degrees

Re:Kyshtym Disaster on Wednesday October 13, 2021 @09:36PM (#28859603)
atleast until we create an artificial star on earth ( i.e. viable fusion reactor )
Re:Facebook Recruiter Correspondence on Sunday October 10, 2021 @12:41AM (#28815791)
initially it is that yes.

but it's the recruiter who decided to play along despite that. At that point OP has no choice but to elaborate and counter the 'criticizing from outside' thing
