Show HN: How many seasons does Melbourne (VIC) have?

I live in Melbourne (Vic, Aus), and I've always felt like the standard 4 seasons have never applied well. A chat with my partner inspired me to actually try and work out if there was a better wayThis is not as tied to local flora and fauna as the pre-colonial calendars, and isn't supposed to be a replacement for them or anything else. Just an exploration of the data, with an interactive...

FYI if anyone wants to pick up the kindle version of this book from Amazon, don't bother. It is an incredibly poor quality scan of a physical book, compiled horizontally and full of pencil markings. I can't for the life of me see a way to report the listing, and the comments about this issue are drowned out by comments about the book contents and being ignored
Re:Choose Exciting Technology on Sunday February 21, 2021 @03:05PM (#26216623)
FYI using the terms ADHD/ADD when not talking about the actual disorder is often offensive to people who have ADHD. It fails to acknowledge that the condition is more complicated than just getting bored quickly, especially when your statement can be interpreted as implying that people with ADHD "lack curiosity and are not digging deep enough". Things are hard enough for people with ADHD without trivialising/generalising/moralising their problems.

Often you need to preserve some state that is lost when using bookmarks (e.g. scroll position, a confirmation message that will be lost on refresh, a paused game/video etc.)

For number 115: by moving the bigger piece side to side you spin the two wheels. Each wheel spins the same amount but in opposite directions. Shafts attached to those wheels can be used to drive components that need to move equally but in different directions.
Re:How I Cured my RSI Pain (2010) on Wednesday July 24, 2013 @08:39PM (#6100168)
To anyone suffering significant hand, arm, neck & shoulder pain, I suggest you consider asking your doctor about Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thoracic_outlet_syndrome)

I was diagnosed with bilateral arterial T.O.S. last year after reading about it in a comment on HN. I very recently had corrective surgery on my right side and I hope to have my left side done soon. I was diagnosed when an ultrasound showed full occlusion of my subclavian arteries whenever I lifted my arms (but only when sitting or standing upright, like at my desk, which was not a standard discovery).

If anyone has any questions feel free to message me.

Re:Curing attention deficit disorder on Monday June 03, 2013 @05:42AM (#5812261)
You cannot cure ADD or ADHD. Not with our current drugs, and not with any known cognitive therapy. The article (and particularly its title) belittles those with the disorder, perhaps without meaning to do so, but it does it all the same. I understand the author was simply trying to put a name to a sub-clinical societal trend they have noticed, but they should not have used the name of a real and tragic disorder. Still, I found it to be an interesting and thought provoking read.
Would the number of professionals which only use a Mac really be at all significant compared to the number of workers in almost every business and field which use MS Office running on Windows machines?

I'm working and unable to spend a lot of time find the papers (for which you would need access to the journals to read)

I do have this transcript of a talk which does a much better job than I can. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9991388/2200_7-barktran.pdf

Re:Ritalin Gone Wrong on Monday January 30, 2012 @12:26AM (#3527635)
What do you mean by mind boosting? Do you mean that the effects of the drug when used by people with ADHD are no different then when used by an NT person, and that everyone is just being "boosted"? (if so, this is not correct, responses to these medications and the dosages required for certain effects differ between the two groups)

When you suggest that people need to "develop the abilities" themselves, do you mean to include ADHD people in this? It is believed that people with ADHD literally cannot develop such abilities. (actually, there appears to be about a 30% lag in their development of them .718yrs = 12.6yrs, .721yrs = 14.7yrs, .7*30yrs = 21yrs etc)

Re:Ritalin Gone Wrong on Monday January 30, 2012 @12:12AM (#3527590)
That is a broken argument. Are you trying to suggest ADHD doesn't exist?

Not being able to sit still is only one of multiple symptoms (from only one of the two categories - inattentive and hyperactive) used to diagnose people with one of several different sub-types of ADHD. (ADHD-HI, ADHD-PI, ADHD-C)

You need a certain minimum of symptoms for diagnosis.

Right now I have a strong pain in my left shoulder, I'm sure I am not alone in this right now of all the people in the world. I bet some of your successful entrepreneurs have had shoulder pain before. When it turns out I am not having a heart attack, and that all those entrepreneurs were not having a heart attack, would you think it correct to suggest that heart attacks aren't real? That is pretty much what you said above.

And beyond that, you need more then just a certain number of symptoms for a diagnosis of a disorder like this. There must be negative effects to your disorder in multiple spheres of your life. (home, education, romantic)

Re:17-year-old wins 100k for creating cancer-killing nanoparticle on Thursday December 08, 2011 @10:57AM (#3329555)
Pretty sure he didn't imply that cancer drives evolution.

wikipedia on cancer: "A large group of different diseases, all involving unregulated cell growth. In cancer, cells divide and grow uncontrollably, forming malignant tumors, and invade nearby parts of the body.... Cancer occurs when problems in the genes of a cell prevent these controls from functioning properly. These problems may come from damage to the gene or may be inherited, and can be caused by various sources inside or outside of the cell"

I think he implied that cancer is an inherent flaw in the gene based reproduction used by complicated organisms. That our genes' ability to mutate, which introduces new and evolutionarily selectable attributes during sexual reproduction, can play up because of things like "tobacco use, infection, radiation, lack of physical activity, poor diet and obesity, and environmental pollutants.", and lead to cancer.

I'm not saying it's totally 100% correct, although I suspect it is close, just explaining what I think he meant.

Re:There is a species of jellyfish that is immortal on Sunday November 27, 2011 @12:06AM (#3281759)
I'm not sure of the exact definition of immortality, but I wouldn't really count this.

Without diving too far into philosophy of self: if I right now I turned into a newborn child (with my DNA and made from my current mass), I would be dead. Sure there would be some kid who was pretty much a clone of my younger self, but anything and everything I would consider part of me (my mind, my memories) would be gone.

It's still really impressive, but without preservation of the mind I think it falls a bit short of what most people expect when they hear "immortal".

Oh wow, I used this as source material for some coursework in a distributed systems class. Leslie Lamport has a couple of things named after him I think.

Logical clocks were my favourite take-away from this.

Ending my 2nd year of a CS degree and I have enough technical knowledge to begin coding up websites and services like many of the other people here on HN. I was wondering whether or not it would be better to run ads on these sites, or to just try and generate large/high quality datasets and then sell those. How does someone like me monetize their data?
Re:Chunking & Gridding - Why parents can't do math today on Friday September 10, 2010 @05:12PM (#1680238)
I've been using a slightly different version of that gridding method to multiply numbers since I was in grade 5. Some guy came into school and showed us some "novel math", and it just clicked for me where long multiplication never really had. These days I can do either, but I'm far quicker doing my grids once I learnt how to draw them fast.

If my experience teaches me anything, it's that if these children progressed up through a higher education system similar to what I have, where the people marking your work seem to have some kind of outright fear of the new and different, they're going to take a beating on their grades. At least until it becomes more widely accepted. Would suck to go first.

Re:4Food: Restaurant adds game mechanics to lunch on Saturday August 14, 2010 @11:07PM (#1604496)
It might stabilize with enough of a community around it, you might even see some sort of hotelling's beach situation between the leading meals.

If it or anything similar takes off, it would be interesting to watch any memes develop.

Re:4Food: Restaurant adds game mechanics to lunch on Saturday August 14, 2010 @10:57PM (#1604487)
Could you explain your position a little more?

This place doesn't seem so bad. In fact, some aspects of it are downright clever. A quick browse of the 4foods website gives a picture of a fast food company that might actually be able to serve healthy food, unlike most of the competition.

Because you can plan your food online beforehand, you can 'design' food which is more healthy than anything mcdonalds would be willing to give menu space for. Not to mention you don't have to rely on their people to come up with healthy options.

Always take what these companies say with a grain of salt, but here are a few quotes from their site.

"Fresh, local produce is transformed into our menu offerings in the Community Kitchen Commissary-a vocational training center."

"We upgrade food that people already eat-burgers, nuggets, fries, salads and teas - transforming them into new menu items that are convenient, and almost infinitely customizable to our guests' lifestyles and cultural preferences. Our food is measurably healthier than existing products."

"Our restaurants are designed to function as community hubs, as they satisfy local appetites in healthy, customizable ways."

It uses social networking to spread, crowd-sources the meals, has a new take on transparency as far as ingredients are concerned and - very importantly for something you are going to spend money on - sounds like fun.

Re:4Food: Restaurant adds game mechanics to lunch on Saturday August 14, 2010 @09:18PM (#1604366)
this is kinda interesting stuff.

"...Here’s how it works: I create a burger, call it “The Bits Burger” and broadcast it to Twitter or Facebook. Each time someone orders my special creation, I get 25 cents credit in the restaurant and my burger rises up the leaderboard. The more customers order my burger, the higher it goes and the more credits I get, until I’m eating free..."

Now, how to game the system...

If this digital data didn't have to be put away somewhere, I would make the most of intelligence. Put someone in charge, with the skills to transfer the data the newer mediums as they become popular and to ensure that the copies are not corrupted in the process. This person would be paid in whatever kind of way leads to the most loyalty, I would also leverage their sense of pride. Maybe have a few different people each tasked with protecting overlapping segments of the data to help ensure nothing is ever lost.

Ideally some kind of artificial intelligence would come about sometime in the future to assume the role of data keeper - hiring people to do any work it couldn't do from within the computer and running off some kind of fund that had been set up. Maybe one day there will be a market for creating intelligent services like this, I hope I have something to do with them.

I've got a chrome extension called "hckr news". It shows you which comments on a HN thread that are new since the last time you visited that page. So far I'm liking it
Re:Nokia doesn't get it - The Truth about N97 [video] on Friday July 30, 2010 @09:13AM (#1560984)
I am a big fan of the older nokia phones, especially the ones with only two screen colours. I accidentally flung them across rooms, dropped them on sidewalks and even put one through a dryer once. They always still worked and I have only ever replaced them when other people bought me newer models.

However, my latest nokia is shocking compared to the others I have had before it. The case started falling off the back about 3 weeks into using it. It takes around 3 minutes to turn on and freezes without fail every time I try to delete my messages or have a look at my call log. A few friends of mine have experienced similar problems with their more expensive models too.

When I run out of room for messages (because I can't delete them), I'm just going to find out where I packed up my phone from 3 years ago and use that. I'd rather have no internet/camera/mms then try my luck with another new nokia.

Re:Ask HN: Socially very rusty .. how to fix things ? on Friday July 16, 2010 @08:53PM (#1523055)
Personally I find that being comfortable in my location really helps. As in I can be one charming man when I am at home, or at this coffee shop I always visit - but less so in new places.

Another thing I've noticed is how much easier it is to talk to someone once you've seen them trip up somehow (like forgetting a word or dropping their phone), I guess it's to do with perceiving status relative to your own. And it's only a matter of time before that person who seems intimidating does something silly/humanizing, see if you can wait it out.

Also look out you don't make things worse while you try to make them better, jumping in too deep too fast and panicking can play havoc with your fight or flight response - don't accidentally condition yourself to run by packing up and leaving every time the bar gets crowded or something. Try riding it out instead (at least just once).

All of this comes from my experiences moving from highschool, where I had gotten into a rut, to university where I had to start over. And from talking to some family friends who work as counselors. As always take random internet advice like my own with a grain of salt.

Goodluck!

Ask HN: Trying to get a copy of Hacker Monthly (in Aus)

I would really like to buy a copy of the first edition of Hacker Monthly (despite having the pdf to it), but MagCloud doesn't ship to Australia and I have no contacts currently in the states or anywhere else that they do ship. Anyone willing to help me out? I would pay for shipping of course.

Re:Ask HN: How do I improve my reading speed? on Friday July 16, 2010 @04:15AM (#1520622)
I find cutting off sub-vocalizing does not help at all, instead it totally messes with how much I comprehend or remember the material I'm reading. Instead I make that little voice in my head go as fast as I can, and it works.

Try practicing talking as fast as you can to a friend, like comically fast - but without making mistakes or abbreviating anything. I used to do this with my sister when I was a little kid all the time, and I have a pretty decent reading speed now. (Can easily finish something like one of the biggest Harry Potter books on a slow Sunday)

As always, heavily technical material takes longer to read. But something like a larger HN discussion thread I can comfortably get through in a couple of minutes. Goodluck!

Re:Poll: How do you use the comments and articles on HN? on Friday July 16, 2010 @03:38AM (#1520569)
I use 'Better HN' chrome extension, so often I just flick between the comments and the content, settling on one of them (usually the comments) when the other is lacking. Also great for adding value to pages you find through means other than HN.
Re:Start seeing magnetic fields on Monday July 12, 2010 @02:05PM (#1508790)
Where did you get it done? And costs/aftercare? And any particular reason you chose that finger?

I've wanted to get it done since I found out about them a year or so ago. Love the idea of adding another whole sense to my collection, even if its a bit of a hack.
