Re:How I Lost My $50,000 Twitter Username on Wednesday January 29, 2014 @03:44AM (#7142755)
The reason for the 6 digits is probably linked to PCI DSS compliance where agents are allowed to view the first 2 and last 4 of stored card numbers.
I 100% agree, I want a couple of local backups and an offsite emergency only if they fail. In fact I hope this kickstarter can deliver that (no affiliation with this, just a backer):

Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2013) on Wednesday May 01, 2013 @09:44AM (#5637806)
ROI - Cheshire, UK - Remote possible

We have over 140 people working on behalf of 12 major motor manufacturers in the UK to support their sales activity. From an IT point of view we are a small team within the business who customise Sage CRM systems (Classic ASP/C#) for some of these motor manufacturers and are now looking to build our own analytics and management product (technology stack not yet chosen, probably not MS).

We are looking for a well rounded web developer who is comfortable with HTML/CSS/Javacript/ASP/C#/SQL Server and ideally someone who also has Sage CRM experience. UI design skills not essential. This is one of the first hires in this area so will have a big say in the new products we create.

Remote working possible though would need to meet face to face occasionally.

If interested drop me a mail at lloyd - at - cogentic.co.uk

Re:Show HN: Available Five Character Alpha Domains on Monday July 16, 2012 @08:48AM (#4250465)
Is there any way to search within the list, e.g. search for abc within the 10000 results?
The less accounting guys took a slightly different approach which was to collect what the users hated about their competitor rather than saying it themselves:

If your competitor is as well used as you say this might work for you.

Alternating which hand uses the mouse fixed a lot of my issues. I use it on my left during the day and right at night. I leave the buttons all set to right handed use.
Re:Ask HN: Feedback on Startup Idea on Wednesday May 23, 2012 @05:59AM (#4012367)
Worthwhile (if difficult) idea to implement. In addition to decrypting the legalese speak it would be helpful to standardise your output so that contracts could be compared side by side.
Re:Financial Modelling for Startups on Thursday May 17, 2012 @09:26AM (#3986833)
Those updates would also be good on the sales web page.
Re:Financial Modelling for Startups on Thursday May 17, 2012 @09:00AM (#3986745)
A couple of items that would help the initial page:

- the page title would be better represented as "Financial Modelling Ebook" or similar

- a simple book image with the book title would be a quick way of making it obvious what you offering

It's an interesting take but I don't buy the relationship between Portal and Photoshop. Portal has a defined end point to each level, the routes you take are often limited as well. Photoshop has no predetermined end, it's in the mind of the user sat in front of it. I am guessing (haven't played it) that Minecraft may be a better example in that is offers creative freedom.
Re:Spotify launches iPad app on Thursday May 03, 2012 @05:05AM (#3922967)
It is only on the desktop version.
Re:Spotify launches iPad app on Thursday May 03, 2012 @05:05AM (#3922966)
I was put off by this as well, but there is a setting to stop it posting the updates to your timeline within the app.
Re:Ask HN: 30, 45 or 60-day free trial conversion rates? on Tuesday May 01, 2012 @08:51AM (#3914049)
By the sounds of it 30 days did do much better. In conversion rate optimisation a 10% conversion improvement is a big improvement.
If you don't mind paying a little, I have used http://url2png.com/ for one of my sites and it works great.

Can recommend url2png, very good service.
Re:Ask HN: Why don't more UK graduates want to join start-ups? on Wednesday October 26, 2011 @10:44AM (#3158777)
Keep an eye on Notts Tuesday as mentioned and pop along to one of the meetups at Antenna in town, a lot of startups attend.
Re:Ask HN: Let's see your weekend projects on Friday September 09, 2011 @05:53AM (#2977529)
Go on then http://www.reviewport.net/rp/register.php - access code 8000RP

Review Port enables photographers, web designers and graphic designers to get private feedback on their portfolios.

Congratulations. In the same boat so know how it feels. Good job on pushing it out of the door.

A good read, looking forward to the rest.
Re:Show HN: Site in beta, feedback appreciated on Monday September 05, 2011 @03:34PM (#2963145)
Yeah, AJAX is definitely on my todo list, lots of places it could enhance the UX. Just need to work out exactly how :)

Fixed your add image error just now. Thanks for having a go.

Re:Show HN: Site in beta, feedback appreciated on Monday September 05, 2011 @07:43AM (#2961934)
Thanks, will add that to the list
Re:Show HN: Site in beta, feedback appreciated on Monday September 05, 2011 @07:19AM (#2961895)
Thanks for the feedback.

1. I hope so to, looking for a smaller more focused market than deviantart/dribbble/flickr etc, people who need to put a whole portfolio together rather than individual images and get it reviewed by experts

2. Yep agree, still needs some love to get it looking okay

3. Thats a neat idea, the work is more important than the text as you say

4. Yeah good shout on threadless, like their rating style as well

5. It's to give people a chance to see the work in case they don't want to review it, might have to rethink how this is presented though

6. I have this in progress now, the dropdown is plain ugly

7. Yep good spot, added to the list

Thanks again for taking a look

Re:Show HN: Site in beta, feedback appreciated on Monday September 05, 2011 @07:09AM (#2961872)
Thanks for the catch will get that fixed.

If you could let me know the rough size of your images in meg that would be a good data point for me? I could happily consider increasing the size if there is a demand for it.

Show HN: Site in beta, feedback appreciated

Hey guys,I would really appreciate it if you could take a look at my new site that I have put into private beta this weekend. In summary it is a site for photographers, graphic designers and web designers to get private feedback on their work. There are plenty of sites out there were we can post our work and get it seen but sometimes you need to be able to get some feedback before having it on...

Re:Ask HN: On which project you're working right now? on Thursday August 25, 2011 @07:56AM (#2924559)
Just about to release my first little site http://reviewport.net (holding/basic info page at the mo)

LAMP stack - never touched any of them before building this and the only ever other code I wrote was a little ASP about 10 years ago (when I say little it was one recruitment site). So this has been a real learning experience.

Re:Ask HN: Which games are hacker favorites? Which platforms? on Thursday August 18, 2011 @05:22AM (#2898557)
Team Fortress 2 (PC) is still a big draw for me,even after playing it for a few years. It's easy to drop in and play but also has a lot of variety and team dynamics.

GT5 (PS3) online, though unless playing with friends can be frustrating with wreckless online racers.

Re:Lean Startup 101 on Tuesday August 16, 2011 @10:24AM (#2891254)
Please can you kill your Chrome IE plugin popup (on IE7), if I had an alternative way of browsing your site on a corporate machine I already would do, dropping a massive popup covering the content that I can't get past doesn't help.
Re:Ask HN: Is Your Startup a Side Project or Full Time? on Thursday August 11, 2011 @10:31AM (#2873002)
Side project, 2-5 hrs per day on top of the day job
