SEEKING FREELANCER - Remote

I'm based in NY (though you can be anywhere) and am looking for a freelancer to code with me on an enterprise HTML5 mobile application project. I'm looking for someone with good experience building single page apps with frameworks like Sencha Touch and Backbone.js. It would also be great if you were a Rails developer (though this is not a necessity) as the backend will be built as a Rails API server. The project will run for 3+ months and part-time would be workable. If this could work for you please contact me at barry[at]barrypeerless[dot]com. I look forward to connecting. Thanks!

SEEKING WORK - New York City, Remote

I'm aggressively looking for greenfield rich-client HTML5 mobile and web projects.

I have 15+ years developing software (enterprise and consumer) and am currently in the early stages of building out a boutique full-service agency focused on HTML5 application development.

I code full-stack Rails / Javascript with an exclusive focus on modern SPA apps (Sencha Touch, Backbone, ExtJS).

When you say fixed fee, am I correct to assume that the number of hours is capped on that? Do your maintenance agreements cover additional features?

I will follow your lead and downgrade to 30 days. Thank you.

Ask HN: Development shops, How do you structure your services post delivery?

I am shifting from a one man consultancy to a formal product development shop. I am currently working on the first version of a mobile and desktop SaaS product for an enterprise client which I have priced on a fixed price basis. I am struggling with how to structure and price my services beyond delivery of the first version of the product. There will be incremental iterations with new features...

I'm a software developer and business consultant focusing exclusively on HTML5 applications. If you're an SMB or enterprise and looking for a new development partner, please contact me if you have end-to-end agency type project needs.

If you're a software company or agency looking for a contractor, I focus on modern Javascript / HTML5 single page applications and have limited availability in Q1 of next year. I'm looking for the following:

- Rich-client Javascript projects using Backbone or ExtJS - HTML5 mobile projects using Sencha Touch or jQuery Mobile

Please email me at barry AT barrypeerless DOT com.

I am also looking for new collaborators to partner up with on projects as I am working near capacity. If you are a contractor that codes in any of the above libraries and / or codes Rails back-end please feel free to reach out.

Cheers, Barry

Re:Can guys in coffeeshops compete with celebrity entrepreneurs? on Saturday February 18, 2012 @11:39AM (#3606922)
As you pointed out, (of-course?) celebrity is an enormous edge in building start-up traction in a social product offering, just as it is in most if not all other domains that require building external support to achieve a goal. An edge is just an edge though; it neither guarantees success for celebrities nor failures for non-celebrities. As someone that's struggled for a long time with how to seed a social network this seems pretty obvious to me and I agree it's a solution to the chicken-and-egg problem of kicking off a social site that you and I can't really compete with. We would have to win on product in a space where celebrity-type reach is not a requirement to creating value for the initial user base (i.e., a smaller chicken-and-egg problem vs. a larger one).
You might want to take a look at http://favo.rs.

I'm an experienced developer that is new to Rails and am looking for freelance work. I'm a self-starter but would like to do some work where I can benefit from working with someone (or a team) that has solid experience. I can work under-market for awhile. Please contact me if you're looking for support on your projects. bglenn09 at gmail dot com.

I agree with the comment about domain knowledge trumping technical knowledge here. It will only help for you to learn how to code, but you definitely do not need to do so. If you have your own capital or sources of funding, it would seem to me to be counterproductive to spend a lot of time becoming proficient in a craft when you could work with a partner on it. Your instinct to find a developer you can work with seems to me to be the correct direction to go in, while you spend some time familiarizing yourself with the development world.

Ask HN: Studying Ruby/Seeking Mentor/Will Work Below Market

I've been in and out of the start-up space. I've been out for some time and am looking to return. I've left my job and am dedicating most of my time to upgrading my web development skills. I'm studying Ruby (and portions of the related ecosystem) as well as HTML/CSS/jQuery (where I'm weak). I've never had mentorship and I'd like to meet somebody that can give me high-level guidance to ensure...

Ask HN: Where to look for intranet work?

I spend a lot of time on here and I'm hoping to get some advice. I'm in my mid-30s. I've started several start-ups since I graduated college, none of which achieved any traction. I've been working a full-time job for the last few years developing and managing the internal business process systems for a manufacturer. I'm now trying to transition back to the start-up world and am looking to...

Can Psychedelics Treat Cancer Via The Mind?

http://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-drugs-of-abuse-20111130,0,969113.story

This is a very good overview on the psychedelic research currently taking place. What really caught my attention was the last section in the article that suggests that a woman suffering from incurable leukemia may have gone into remission as a result of a psilocybin session that was intended to help ease anxiety related to dying. It's just one anecdote, but it raises intriguing possibilities.

Re:Ask HN: How would you proxy for sales conversion rates? on Thursday November 10, 2011 @08:36PM (#3222933)
This is great info. Do you have any references for metrics like these or are they anecdotal based on your experience?

Ask HN: How would you proxy for sales conversion rates?

I'm a software developer working on a (non-software/non-technology) line of consumable products that will require significant capital costs to even do a sample production run. Given that, I'd like to test the waters to try and estimate metrics like customer acquisition costs and whether a given product will actually sell before investing the capital. Based on what I've learned here, it seems...

Ask HN: Is there anything similar to DocumentCloud for non-journalists?

I'm looking to be able to store pdf documents in the cloud and be able to search them. DocumentCloud looks perfect but I'm not in journalism. I'm having trouble finding an obvious alternative. Do you guys like any other services or know of a simple way to do this with NoSql? I was looking into using a hosted mongodb service but I can't find any information on searching binary data. Thanks...

I tried a similar setup remoting into a virtual windows machine for awhile and ultimately abandoned it because of latency. I didn't fully realize what a difference a small amount of latency could make until I went back and it'd take a lot for me to try it again. So my recommendation is to make sure it's very comparable in terms of performance because the development time you can lose from latency will dwarf keeping machines in sync and may even go unnoticed for awhile.
