Ask HN: Paradigm changes you've experienced?

I was wondering if people on HN could share some 'paradigm changes' in the way they look at the world they've experienced. For example as a student of math, the fundamental way in which I view things could be more or less summarized into three phases:- Emphasis on 'objects' (high school): E.g. what are the properties of this specific real valued function? Solve this specific geometry problem....

Ask HN: Non-web collaborators?

It seems that there is a very strong emphasis on web-startups among the HN community. While I very much value the discussion on HN, I am simply not that interested in web programming for its own sake.Anyways, I am a math graduate student and I'd be happy to collaborate with anyone who needs a person with a strong quantitative background.

Re:Ask HN: Where's the fun in programming? on Sunday June 20, 2010 @01:56PM (#1446873)
I think that the whole idea of asking someone else to explain "where the fun is in coding" is somewhat of an oxymoron. If you cannot find the fun yourself, it is hard to believe that you will be able to find it by someone else telling you about it.

Ask HN: Making money as a graduate student

I am sure that many of you have been in this situation before. The short story is this: I am an international graduate student at an American University (a very good one). I have enough financial support to live (ie. the standard graduate student stipend), and have a small fellowship from my home country. However, I am finding myself annoyed by how little it adds up to after taking into account...

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned anything to do with the structure of the internet. Suppose someone takes out all of the root DNS servers or the bgp system breaks down, or something similar. Even though there might not be any loss of life, this could cause tremendous amount of damage in other areas.

This is something I thought about a lot. I'm currently a grad student at a great school and even though I sometimes get frustrated with classes, I've never regretted it. There is a lot more to grad school than just taking classes and doing research.

For me, the main attraction and benefit of being in grad school was being immersed in an environment filled with smart people wanting to "do more". My school's heavy emphasis on entrepreneurship has also energized me about creating a startup. The caveat is that one must find a way to attend grad school for free (which actually isn't hard at all).
