I had been a Economist subscriber for almost 20 years. But then gradually I realized that their reporting on some issues are extremely biased and they conveniently skip reporting some facts to match their intended narrative and lead the reader to distorted conclusions. So I would assume they would be doing the same with other topics as well. I did not renew my subscription.

The book Nuclear War: A Scenario Hardcover by Annie Jacobsen should be essential reading for all politicians and those profiteering from the Military Industrial Complex

Re:Canadian math prodigy allegedly stole US$65M in crypto on Monday April 14, 2025 @10:49AM (#43681933)
He did not steal anything. He beat the fund (Indexed Finance) at their own game.

He has not stolen anybody's password, has not modified DeFI code - simply executed a set of financial transactions according to the rules (expressed as DeFI smart contracts) and profited from it.

Indexed Finance is an unlicensed investment firm. The promoters knew the risk ( decentralized finance) and now they want to blame someone who outsmarted them at their own game.

After trying many bookmarking solutions, settled on Goodlinks.

Pros: - stores data in your icloud - stores a copy where possible - full-text search

Cons: - not open-source - works on mac/ios only

No, I am not suggesting this. And to my knowledge neither did Russia at any point suggest this. If Russia did, kindly share. The probability that Russia will invade Europe is propaganda propagated by western media. Request you to watch the 2 videos I have linked above.

EVs have heavy lithium batteries, leads to higher wear and tear of tires, and will make the problem worse.

You can try Watermelon DB. It is local first disconnected framework. And it has a sync framework as well, but you have to create your own backend (using any DB) for syncing. Stable product and works great

For understanding the origins of Central Banking, highly recommend: The Creature from Jekyll Island: A Second Look at the Federal Reserve by G. Edward Griffin
Re:What to read to understand central banking on Thursday September 08, 2022 @06:24AM (#32763597)
This book explains Central Banking down to the balance sheet level and makes things crystal clear.
I have a very sensitive stomach; I get an upset stomach (watery stools) and pimples all over my forehead and head when I have coffee. With cold brew, (if made properly), I do not get any of this. So there is definitely some difference in the chemical constituents of hot-coffee vs cold-brew-coffee. Some other papers state less caffeic acid and less quinic acid.

The US is law abiding only when it is in their interest. The rest of the time they either flout law or bend it. How many other nations have effected: directly or covertly, the change in another countries leadership only for their own selfish interests? .. . as much as the US?
It is in India as well. The salaries have doubled in the last couple of years. Hiring has become extremely difficult. Good SWEs typically have 2-3 offers at 2x to 3x salaries
The problem with olive oil is that because of its' popularity it is often adulterated (with seed-oils, often at source). So do your research before you buy.

Re:Ask HN: Anyone know any funny programming jokes? on Thursday January 21, 2021 @09:14AM (#25858972)
As virtual reality simulators assume larger roles in helicopter combat training , programmers have gone to great lengths to increase the realism of the their scenarios, including detailed landscapes and — in the case of the Northern Territory’s Operation Phoenix — herds of kangaroos (since groups of disturbed animals might well give away a helicopters position).

The head of the Defense Science and Technology Organization’s Land Operations/Simulations division reportedly instructed developers to model the local marsupials’ movements and reaction to helicopters.

Being efficient programmers, they just re-appropriated some code originally used to model infantry detachments reactions under the same stimuli, changed the mapped icon from a soldier to a kangaroo, and increased the figures’ speed of movement.

Eager to demonstrate their flying skills for some visiting American pilots, the hotshot Aussies “buzzed” the virtual kangaroos in low flight during a simulation. The kangaroos scattered, as predicted, and the Americans nodded appreciatively . . . and then did a double-take as the kangaroos reappeared from behind a hill and launched a barrage of stinger missiles at the hapless helicopter. (Apparently the programmers had forgotten the remove “that” part of the infantry coding).

Re:Ask HN: How to learn sales? on Sunday September 27, 2020 @10:39AM (#24606963)
The audible book: The Psychology of Selling - The Art of Closing Sales, by Brian Tracy, is very good in helping overcome the fear that some of us might have before the sales call/meeting, handling the rejections, and moulding your approach/attitude towards selling. There are many more great tips in this book. Recommend the audible, not the print.
Re:Ask HN: Shopify self hosted e-commerce alternative? on Saturday June 20, 2020 @02:47AM (#23582278)
I second that. Have used saleor for couple of Ecommerce stores. Has enough features to launch a store out of the box while lacking all the features that if incorporated would make the platform extremely complicated. You can take the community edition and extend it to meet your requirements.
