Re:Why Don't We Live in an Art Nouveau World? on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @09:56AM (#50352796)
Counterpoint, a relative of mine works in a sector where he sees a lot of luxury villas (we're from Tuscany, so it's full of wealthy oligarchs on the coast). I've seen some of the photos and I'd say none of them look good to me, they're just modernist regular shaped blocks of something that makes a house, and inside the kitchiest decorations possible just to flaunt money. And yet, they could afford to pay for any style they wanted
Technically, Claude did it, not Anthropic
Re:Typesafe AI raises $870M at $7.5B on Saturday October 10, 2026 @08:15AM (#50032163)
Oh this is interesting. I've seen it was added in the last months on x but it's cool nonetheless. Otoh, i don't miss not using a lot of social networks except for a few niche subreddits

Jesus f christ that might be why I saw it for a few days here on hn together with collateral discussions and topics

Just a question, are these creators paid to sponsor these products? Because at least in eu, they would need to add a "#adv" in their post, which makes it easy for me to spot sponsored content here. I guess in the rest of the world it may not be necessary
Re:AI companies leak data to advertisers [pdf] on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @08:50AM (#49892325)
It's a part time job hiring contractors, I'm doing this only because they pay would be nice but I know very well I can be fired anytime or when the project is done...

Anyway I'm a student so I'm not looking for something stable. BTW now it's getting better but if I were the client paying for those services I'd be pretty fucking furious for what's going on - guess they'll never know tho

Re:AI companies leak data to advertisers [pdf] on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @07:04AM (#49891189)
I'm taking an onboarding process for an Ai company helping other (much) bigger Ai companies and the amount of vibecoded platforms and documentation is staggering. Like, training process so broken that the platform just doesn't load sometimes, things that have never even been tried are published and you have to use them and they suck so much because it is apparent that no human ever touched that and probably wouldn't want to

Understood, never had to deal with healthcare in Lazio region

>I’m also very sure that anyone that advocates for government healthcare should try actually using it in one of these countries

I actually do since I'm Italian lol

Don't get me wrong, what has happened to you feels at best a bad practice, at worst something that goes on the news or that has a legal proceeding afterwards. I've known people with good and bad experiences, I can't complain too much about it. Can I ask in which region? Italian Healthcare is somewhat region-dependant

I honestly don't know, there's a conda environment that should be used to install everything without conflicts but well...

A few hours ago I was looking for some food safety information, found a US gov website posted on reddit and

The website wasn't available anymore

Welcome
Re:AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible on Saturday September 19, 2026 @11:05AM (#49767158)
And the old fluo ones are more effective than decorated new ones, since they're mostly on road sides and you need to be able to tell at a glance what they're about. I unironically went to a sagra recently because I spotted a similar fluo advert while cycling in Tuscany
Re:Science Is Open Software on Saturday September 19, 2026 @08:40AM (#49766102)
You're goat, I'm trying to reproduce code from a paper and by following their instructions I can't even get packages to install because they conflict
Re:AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible on Saturday September 19, 2026 @06:39AM (#49765287)
I was honestly ok with the silly looking posters. Where I'm from in italy it's common to have sagre, sort of cheap food events sponsored by the municipality/local shops. Before ai the posters looked like each other (as in, poster typically looking like sagre posters). Now not even that, they're just slop ai that could be everything before you read. Nobody needed better looking posters in this case...

Before ai example https://www.sagretoscane.com/sagre/fi/rignano-sullarno/sagra...

Post Ai example https://www.instagram.com/p/DZiKFZgIwcY/

Here's an article by the biggest online Italian newspaper, worth reading translated https://www.ilpost.it/2026/07/26/ai-locandine-sagre/

Ok sorry but I forgot to read if there were answers.

So I still have to do things concretely and have moved to another country, for now I have mostly read papers (...). But well anyway

There's a class of ml algorithms that belong to continuous learning, what they do is integrate knowledge as they operate. In short, the difference between a traditional ml is that once it's trained the weights don't change, while here they do.

The thing is, there are a handful of techniques that you can used, based on your scenario, to degrade the performance of these models. In a white box attack you assume you have access to training data and training process. you can alter the training data, for example in the computer vision field you can add a small perturbation to images (not visible to human eye) so that the model might learn to recognize that pattern rather than the actual animal in picture for example. Or you might swap labels. But white attacks sound kinda obvious, come on... Well mostly, some white box attacks are more subtle and can be used to put a backdoor in a model that only activates when it is seen again during operation, much more stealthy and dangerous because you might target a very narrow class or a single one without degrading its performance for others. Example, you put a shape on a "stop" sign photo, and that shape gets recognized as "go" by a self driving car which now doesn't recognize the stop sign, but recognizes stop signs without that shape glued to it

A black box attack such as rip https://arxiv.org/abs/2412.01154

Can operate without having access to the model or the training process. The gist is, continual learning models might make a few errors when operating (as every ml model), and it's not a problem if they ingest them and update their model based on an incorrect prediction, in a regular scenario... But in rip, you craft a dataset of predictions you know are incorrect (you have a photo, you know it's cat, model predicts dog) and you send them to the model a lot of times. The model eventually will have degraded performance because continual learning models are updated based on the predictions they make, and making a lot of bad guesses degrades performance.

There are other attacks that are not white or black box but in between, assuming you have a copy of the model can allow you to craft an image which is made so that when sent to the model, what the model does when updating the weights is basically climbing the gradient

I'll leave a few links because I wrote this in a rush when busy

This is a grouping of different techniques and defences for continual learning https://dl.acm.org/doi/full/10.1145/3585385

I'm doing my thesis on poisoning continual learning models (although limited to computer vision ones) and it really is interesting
Re:Get your Windows license refund on Friday August 28, 2026 @10:12AM (#49478783)
A big store chain in italy (mediaworld/mediamarkt) sells laptops without license as well, of course with a lower price than the equivalent with windows license
What did it say? Deleted now
In italy they were even arrested but always cleared of what they were accused. I don't believe the US gov did a better job investigating them either
>Their claim about Rose City Antifa seems to be false, however, conflating Rose City Antifa with another project called Rose City Counterinfo.

I haven't followed the legislative process, where can I find that the eu wanted a single registry but the country pushed for national ones? Because i have never read it.

I'm not saying it's not true, it's just that it's so hard to follow these things when one is supposed to have a life as well

>if the Europeans really want to, they could produce a lot more by converting over to 'war mode'

As an Italian there's definitely been a perceptible shift due to the increase in defense spending. Leonardo now makes TV ads (something I had never seen before), they advertise on newspapers (...)

Off topic, but it's funny to me how the Leonardo TV ads basically skips over the defense part https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXytSNOt_0I

I'm curious to know what they have been providing in suggestions up to now, can you tell us?
>But maybe I'm wrong? If you are in your 20s now and feel like writing down your thoughts about this topic, consider yourself challenged! I'd love to read them.

i'm 24. I think that improvements in tech nowadays mostly involve the hobbyist of any niche, while the general public is ever more satisfied with what already exists.

sd to hd to full hd was cool, full hd to 1440p i can see the difference, at 4k yes but it is not so big. Miniled is something people won't really care about imho (and they can already go very bright, i'm only waiting for more minileds to be integrated in monitors before changing mine).

Audio, well, most people will be satisfied with cheap razer/gaming/bose/whatever headphones are there. Sure anc is cool if you're in a noisy environment quite often

Bikes, well at 24yo i'm not really knowledgeable to say whether a bianchi that costs more than a motorbike is worth the upgrade from an older model... but ebikes are kinda nice even for people outside of the cycling world

However, what has happened with audio and video - and a change that i can perceive -, is the prices of things (not cpu/gpu related, for obvious reasons) coming down. oleds were so espensive ten years ago, now they are not. 4k minileds monitor are as expensive now as my regular non miniled 1440p va monitor from ~4/5 years ago. Hifiman has (permanently) slashed the prices of its headphones more than once over the years. It is not exciting as new tech but it is "just" nice

p.s. wifi printers are a pain in the ass much more than cable printes, and for llms i am kinda happy with them, i'll give you that, they're a godsend for studying; i'm less excited about the idea they'll replace most workers
