Help picking a hosting solution for a rails app

We need: - Some sort of clear path for scaling - Ability to run background jobs - Decent amount of control - Outbound emailLooked at: - Heroku - EYHonestly, underwhelmed so far.Is it better to get our own box and administer it ourselves. I'm dumb so I'd really prefer to spend as little time as possible on this aspect, but maybe it is better to bite the bullet? What do people think?

I actually would rather stand up for most of the time on long flights. Share and rotate a sleeping space with other passengers.

No
Re:Out Of Nowhere, The iPad Has A Real Competitor on Monday July 12, 2010 @11:12AM (#1508096)
I love it when people think competing with the iPad means having more bullet point features.

Take it in and get a replacement. Done.
Re:Did Americans in 1776 have British accents? on Sunday July 04, 2010 @10:56PM (#1487060)
Does this mean Kevin Costner didn't actually have a ridiculous accent in Robin Hood?

Suggestion: make the video on the website usable on the device the software is meant for, or just put up a bunch of screenshots.
Re:IPhone 4 vs Evo 4G Video on Tuesday June 29, 2010 @10:23AM (#1471480)
Lighten up. It's for laughs. I want an iPhone 4 but this is still hilarious.
My 3G seems to be the same in terms of speed. iBooks has pretty lousy performance on it though.

The new mailboxes make it worth it for me.

Jailbroken? Don't enable wallpapers and multitasking. You'll find out why it isn't supported officially by Apple. Absolute shit performance if you do.

Lunch in Copenhagen for $36. Wonderful.
Re:Calling out Jason Fried for bad business advice on Thursday June 24, 2010 @07:42PM (#1459516)
In my opinion, it is kinda like how you just know 37signals sometimes leaves out weasel words to get people riled up and serve as good linkbait.

Wait, did I need the 'in my opinion' or not? I am confused now.

Playing devil's advocate here. >:\

If you think you can focus or be actively conscious of all these things at once, you 1)have a weird definition of focus, 2)are probably fvcked.

This is the same guy that said iPhone sales had peaked by 2010, a couple weeks before Apple announced record sales: http://communities-dominate.blogs.com/brands/2010/04/iphone-...

And then blamed his faulty analysis on Chinese New Year: http://communities-dominate.blogs.com/brands/2010/04/apple-t...

Re:That Sounds Smart on Friday June 18, 2010 @04:39AM (#1441682)
Honest question: how many people here actually think they are dumber than the average person?
Re:How does one get off Haskell? on Friday June 18, 2010 @04:34AM (#1441674)
Never used Haskell, so if are Haskell-ian soul trapping sirens I am not aware of, ignore this dumb post.

1. There are languages out there you have not used.

2. Get rid of biases and give second chances to the ones that you have.

3. Maybe you are right. You'll never be able to get off Haskell. Stop complaining, and go do something else. Math, art, biology, business, some of that shit is pretty fucking interesting.

Re:'First to Do It' vs. 'First to Do It Right' on Friday June 18, 2010 @04:20AM (#1441659)
It's almost surely your imagination, even if other people have had the same experience. By the way, I have the same experience.

He said innovative and competitive.
Written permission probably means / is part of submitting it to the app store and getting it approved. No overhead.
Re:Go To University, Not For CS on Sunday May 30, 2010 @08:07PM (#1391378)
CS != Programming. Honestly. No, really.

Personal data points, third party anecdotes even less so, are not a reliable way to extrapolate how CS (or any major) is taught outside of the MITs of the world. Your experiences, shockingly, are one among many, and remain yours.

That said ...

The culture thing is spot on. That is what getting an education is all about.

Re:It's OK Not to Write Unit Tests on Tuesday May 25, 2010 @11:41AM (#1377687)
Then why didn't you drop the tests if you think there was no benefit?
Re:What iPads Did To My Family on Friday May 07, 2010 @04:42AM (#1327008)
- No Flash, no multitasking, no Camera!

- Just a big iTouch.

- 256MB RAM!? Pfft.

- WTF, not widescreen?!

- LCD bad for reading.

- $500?? Overpriced.

- Can't see why anyone would need one.

- Fills a need that isn't there.

- Looks uncomfortable.

- You have to pay $99 to publish on it.

- Yeah, if you like to peck and type.

- It's gonna destroy the culture of content creation.

- Fine if you don't need to get real work done.

- Only fanboys will buy one.

- Give me a netbook so I can program.

- People who are buying iPads are sheep.

- It would not sell if it weren't for the marketing.

- Sure it's selling well now, but what about in 6 months/1 year/2 years …

- Sure it's selling well now, but no true intelligent scotsman …

- Just a toy.

- I can't believe people are buying this without being able to articulate why.

- Look, someone says they stopped using it! I was right.

- No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame.

28 days and $1,000,000,000 in revenues later, still reasons Apple doesn't give a flying frack about, and maybe a sign that some of us should reevaluate how much we know about the buying habits of the non-comic book guys, and that there might be something there that warrants more than a knee jerk cmdrtaco response.

Re:Ask HN: Leaving a company I recently joined? on Thursday May 06, 2010 @04:28AM (#1323903)
Your coworkers should not and probably will not feel negatively about you looking out for yourself. Speaking from experience from both sides of the aisle. Just how personal relationships work.

The company has invested in you, but you have been investing in the company as well. You won't get the time you spent there back to work on something else.

If you are going to grow or be more challenged more somewhere else, then the future impact will be positive anyway, for you and others. Just be you aren't drinking the new company kool-aid before making a decision.

Re:Netbooks are still a great deal on Tuesday April 27, 2010 @09:14AM (#1298102)
Safari on the iPad remembers passwords fine. Just because the author is too blinded to figure it out doesn't make it true.
Re:Netbooks are still a great deal on Tuesday April 27, 2010 @09:12AM (#1298092)
Exactly. I'm amazed at how fast I can type on this thing with just one hand. My palm barely moves at all, just the fingers doing the moving and mostly just extending through muscle memory.
Re:Netbooks are still a great deal on Tuesday April 27, 2010 @09:07AM (#1298079)
That's funny. Safari on my iPad remembers my Facebook (and HN) passwords fine.
