Highly recommend it!
Re:Ruby 2.6 on Monday December 24, 2018 @09:09AM (#18752191)
Is it a good time to learn Ruby? I mostly do React and Node + Java work professionally, but I've been looking into Ruby as a fun side project language. I would appreciate any anecdotes!
Not controversial. Ubuntu specifically makes me unhappy.
Good joke.
Wow what a coincidence. It's so random how these things happen.

Unrelated to your point and this thread, but can someone share some data/evidence on this? (not that I am denying it)

The toxicity is seeping.

Way to miss the point entirely.

Employee happiness is directly correlated with productivity.

It is indeed a two way street.

Every company needs to adopt this movement. I wish the HN community weren't so rooted in their toxicity, and just recognized the need for industry-wide change.

Can't speak for others, but at my large tech company the push for empathy has demonstrably increased employee happiness.

Naturally, the individuals who argued against these changes were older white male engineers too ingrained in their ways.

> Empathy as a way to not communicate directly is just a waste of time

It is this attitude that drives people, and especially women and minorities, away from tech.

I question the professional experience of those suggesting that continuing to be an asshole is the preferable situation here ("but at least he's HONEST"). That would simply not fly at my company.

It is absolutely possible to be kind when giving honest and constructive feedback and criticism. Empathy is a skill this industry needs to develop.

I think I misunderstood ... what exactly is rare?

Behold, the average HN user I was referring to

People like you take the fun out of this community

I can't speak for who you're replying to, but I find myself using it at restaurants, bars, and public locations where music is playing, as well as friends' cars, and other social gatherings. I know these sort of situations are rare for the average HN user.
