These are properly called "GPUs", as in "Grep Processing Units"!

Gambit-C 3.0 binaries are available at: https://gambitscheme.org/3.0/gc30-dj.zip (for DOS/DJGPP)

The other versions from https://gambitscheme.org/3.0/ are Windows or MacOS Classic binaries.

Needs a 386+ CPU, though.

As you seem to be the author: will this run on a voyage 200? Also: very impressive.
But I want to!

Honestly, I don't understand this. AFAIK colorForth was a standalone system for Pentium class machines. How do Windows updates come into this?
Re:Tiny electric motor can produce more than 1,000 horsepower on Monday November 03, 2025 @11:10AM (#45800605)
Oil cooling. Besides this is a peak power value, so thermal constraints don't matter. Continous power is given around 350-400 kW.

Ask HN: DOS Based "Multitaskers"

Dear Auntie HN,I recently tried QuarterDeck DesqView for multitasking (16 bit real mode) applications. It installed allright, but I couldn't get it to multitask PC-Scheme (More precisely PCS/Geneva 4.02PL1) properly. Could you recommend any alternative DOS Versions or task switchers better suited to that?Programs I didn't try * MS multitasking DOS (to which the source was released not long...

My favourite is Texas Instruments PC-Scheme. Complete with Emacs-like editor. You could compile and evaluate regions in the editor. It is amazing what you can do in 2MB or even 640K.

This motivates me to try this on my Ministrel 4th (21th century Jupiter Ace clone).

Scheme Compilers:

* Gambit-C 3.0 for MS-DOS (https://gambitscheme.org/3.0/gc30-dj.zip)

* MIT-Scheme 7.3 for DOS: (https://groups.csail.mit.edu/mac/ftpdir/scheme-7.3/pc/)

Both need a 386+.

* PC-Scheme/Geneva (https://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/project/ai-repository/ai/lang/...) Bytecode compiler, runs on 8086+, can use up to 2MB of EMS memory.

Common Object File Format (COFF)?
Re:Software Rot on Wednesday August 06, 2025 @02:22AM (#44808374)
I think once you get rid of dynamic libraries and GUIs your software rot will be greatly reduced.

Re:Classic Common Desktop Environment coming to OpenBSD on Thursday July 31, 2025 @06:54AM (#44744312)
Does it come with dtksh? (dtksh or dtmksh, not sure)
There's also s4iof (R4RS), s5iof (R5RS) and skint (R7RS, but hey 5 .c files), all from the same people. I might interject that R4RS might seem preferable for the minimalist cadre.

Re:Structure and Interpretation of Classical Mechanics on Friday June 28, 2024 @06:10PM (#40825834)
I once joined a Clojure group for reading SICM. But then the discussion turned out to be more about porting the stuff to Clojure than physics.
This is one of a slew of articles containing the following claims:

* magnet material was created used a new "AI platform"

* development process is 200x faster

* (raw ?) material costs are down to 50%

* carbon material emissions down to 70%

What is not said:

* Any kind of detail about the magnet material or material performance

Overall they seem much more intent on selling their "innovative, new AI material design process" than the material process

Wait until the hype is over?
Maybe you'd be interested in this:

https://github.com/timonoko/Nokolisp_On_Nokia_phone

But I can't figure out how to install it, while I know how to build nokolisp with MASM. Thus the MSDOS based Nokolisp is more useful, at least for me.

BTW the cited HN posting contains at least one factual error: The Nokia Communicator 9110 was based on an 486SX SOC, not an 80186.

But to each his own.

You probably only need access to DOS on your Communicator. To achieve this you need to create a file B:\NOKIA\INSTALL.BAT and reboot the communicator. From this batch file you can call Nokolisp. If "INSTALL.BAT" exits the normal GEOS shell will start.
But still impressive. I will see, if I can massage Justine Tunney's sectorlisp into something resembling a (subset of) LOGO, probably w/o turtle graphics. Deliverable will probably be a DOS COM-file rather than a boot sector.
No way to define procedures and no list processing? Hardly LOGO.

I tried to get it to run Peter Norvig's JScheme [1]. Apparently I also need a class library like GNU classpath?
