IYKYK
My Proton Business subscription renews in February, and I'm on the fence.
All I want is a privacy-focused (ideally EU-based) groupware... Email, Calendar and some Shared Cloud Storage. I don't want Proton to move fast, I just want them to keep doing what I thought they were doing, and do that well.
Fastmail has been mentioned multiple times, but they only do email and calendar (good for them!). But after reading all about what Yen's been saying, I'm considering switching anyway and swapping Cloud Storage for a NAS.
When I was running a small dev agency with a sprinkling of web projects, Angular was useful because it every project looked more or less the same. The rigidity (and verbosity) it imposed was an advantage in this setting, as it helped with the cognitive load when switching between projects. Apart from that, I wasn’t a fan either.
No mention of any of Yen’s behavior towards employees and “not hiring engineers” in the future. So I guess that makes it both true, and a half-hearted apology. Pretty disappointing.
It’s not flagged. Yet it does seem to be artificially pushed down, even if it is very active: #2 on
https://news.ycombinator.com/activeAs someone who spends a lot of time reading HN, I would really like an explanation. So if @dang or any other mod reads this…
TIL about /active. Interesting, thank you.
@dang: care to explain what this is about?
Why has this suddenly disappeared from the front page? It’s not flagged.
Must have interfered with SV reality distortion field.
WTH…? I use iTerm2 and wasn’t aware of this. What an incredibly bad call.
> Just use the LLM to make a thing that's actually good at what you need it to do.
I don’t have a deep understanding of this topic, but wouldn’t you also need a good amount of relevant data to train on?
> SQLAlchemy has an eDSL of SQL, so you can skip the whole ORM/table mapping layer, and just use it to programmatically construct SQL syntax
Yes, this is called SQLAlchemy Core: http://docs.sqlalchemy.org/en/latest/core/
You can also just use psycopg (the Postgres driver layer) directly, it’s surprisingly ergonomic in my (limited) experience.
“tokens spent” is just not as impressive as “hours of blood, sweat and tears”
It’s the same for me, but I really can’t put my finger on why I feel that way.
Maybe you subconciously expect that it’s vibe-coded fart that will be unmaintained in six months as the person who built it loses interest?
Or maybe it’s the sheer volume of stuff that is being built now?
Or maybe I’m just depressed by it all. Don’t know. Wonder what you think about it.
I had it open, then decided to read it later because my kid needed attention. Ten minutes later I was looking for it on the frontpage and couldn’t find it anymore. I spend lots of time (too much) on HN and it definitely felt like some coordinated effort, very non-organic.
Oh no, I missed that. What a shame. :-(
Thanks for reminding me to rewatch Event Horizon for the N-th time.

That line stuck with me. I wonder how the engineers building Scion feel about that? If that really is the future, then I guess I have to find another profession. Retirement is still too far away.

Huh, good idea, thanks!
Imagine having to debug your WiFi or Bluetooth while trying to place an emergency call.

that’s why, obviously!</s>
Same here, but I never considered electronics over software. Maybe woodworking after all. :-)
Don’t threaten me with a good time and job security.
I wasn't aware that Supabase is self-hostable - thanks for pointing that out, will have a look. Customer is in Europe, if they decide to move away from Firebase, they don't want to migrate to another managed platform run by a US company (digital sovereignty etc.)
I remember first learning about Firebase when working on Android push notifications, a loooooong time ago (~2011 i think). Over time it grew into this full-featured app development platform, after an aquisition (don’t remember the name).
These days however it feels a bit neglected, and somehow poorly bolted on to GCP. I still have a few production apps running on it and news like this reinforces my belief that it’s in decline.
What are folks using these days that (ideally) is open source and self-hostable? I don’t want to lock in with another platform. Some of these apps use the offline sync feature of Firestore (apps used in basements and other low-connectivity areas).
While I fully agree, this is hard to sell to the other side, be it management, or a customer.
