Thank you. Apparently I’m being downvoted here for this view.
> Whenever I’ve seen AI researchers talk about the possibility of AI writing fiction they always sound very confused about why people read novels.
I wish it was just AI researchers. I recently recommended a non-fiction book to a friend, and they said they don’t have time to read anymore. They read an LLM summary instead (popular book, probably in the training data), and said they agreed with the core concepts. I was honestly stunned. The whole interaction felt completely foreign to me.
In TFA the comment about GPT-X finishing George R. R. Martin’s series without involving the author felt extremely dystopian to me. I felt enraged for hours afterwards. Have these people never read a book themselves for the pure joy of it? Were they only interested in the outcome or the “takeaways”?
Then remove the app? I’ve just been cleaning up unused apps, and I could remove it. Not sure if that was always possible.
Out of curiosity, what other ways do you have to reach flow state? I honestly struggle to name even one. And definitely not one that would pay the bills.
I stopped reading at “The honest caveat”…
Same. I can’t really put my finger on what exactly is turning me off though. I mean, apart from the obvious AI-generated text.
> So you’re telling me that I can trust the on device numbers enough?
Not at all :-) But at least this process doesn’t lead to pain and suffering because either the ScreenTime notification doesn’t arrive on a parent device, or the “Allow” action isn’t picked up by the child’s device. The whole messaging part to get permission to do something is really unreliable, at least in our household.
100% agree. We had to turn it off because it was too frustrating for everyone involve. Now we’re at “trust, but verify” where “verify” is looking at Screen Time stats at the end of each week.
My only plausible explanation is that no one who works at Apple has kids.
This resonates with me so much.
One thing I personally have noticed is that very result-oriented people seem to be vastly more optimistic about AI since for them it’s all about getting from A to B as quickly as possible, and AI broadly seems to promise that.
Conversely, the people who find joy in what they do, and see the journey and its frustrations as fulfilling and full of learning, tend to be more pessimistic or disillusioned.

IIRC correctly, XP’s stability greatly increased after Service Pack 2 was published.
I also wonder what his thoughts on “modern Windows” are
Exactly.
My humanity is not paying my bills.
Sorry, I guess that was confusing. I still turn my head at 3 or 5 strokes to breathe. But with some routine, the breathing movements become second nature and it feels like I’m looking down most of the time.
But I do see other swimmers use a snorkel mask for a few of their sets.
If you have an iPhone, you can configure it as an Accessibility shortcut (triple-press side button to switch to monochrome ans back).
I’m married and have kids so there’s always something going on in my life and I don’t get many opportunities for “peace and quiet”.
What works wonders for me is swimming. I only do front crawl so I’m basically staring at the bottom of the pool for the entire duration of the swim. It’s incredibly boring. But something happens in my head, I can just think better. I will often take a problem from work and mull it over in the water, and very often I come up with either a solution or otherwise put it in perspective or some other strategy to deal with it.
Highly recommend. Also at my age (mid-40s), some form of movement that is gentle on the joints is appreciated.
> the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence
takes notes. love this!
Same here, minutes instead of seconds. I was wondering if there's something wrong with my CI setup.
> They will continue to breed, expanding territory unless there are predators.
Just like our fellow humans. Godzilla to the rescue!
The Aztec-to-half-Blocks renderer is neat! :-)
I was merely pointing out that the post was published in 2018 so AI-free is kind of implied.
I think the ideas presented in the article are interesting, but at times the Notion references were a bit much. The author disclosed that they work there, fine, but at times it felt like it was more about showing off a Notion feature (e.g. embedded interactive HTML).
So that was what 13yr old me was doing modifying himem.sys to get some stupid game to launch. :-)
Side note: there’s plenty of Analytics tools that don’t require cookies. Plausible (

Not affiliated, just a happy customer.

There’s plenty of usage in the browser environment as well, plenty of client-side SDKs for things like e.g. video editing, barcode scanning, etc. use it.

erm... what?
raises handI too confess to writing code by hand. It… works for me?
It also works really well as a conversation starter for me. I forget people’s names and the context all the time, but the faces stay familiar, and of course you can tell from their facial expression that we’ve met.
