News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Last consumer router that ran any kind of BSD based firmware was probably Apple Airport and that was a long time ago.
Monitoring, I guess?
Re:Mystery of 60-Second Fluctuations in Power Grids Solved on Monday November 02, 2026 @05:23AM (#50335052)
Yes, using prime numbers are a good way to reduce the risk of multiple timers coinciding, for example a 10s, 30s, 60s period on a freshly restarted node / process.
They were sorry.
They are indeed a little bland, but the GPT is very far from creative either, just busier and way over the top.
It would be very useful for some use-case I have around deciding if an input has potentially sensitive data, to avoid sending it to AI providers. Having to call an external API makes this a catch 22.
Re:Donaldson Futuro House in Idyllwild, California, USA on Thursday October 15, 2026 @05:06AM (#50101107)
Unfortunately you cannot check the insides, but it's still nice that it's on display.
Tapping in a tempo could be useful.
Re:QGIS bans AI assisted contributions on Monday October 12, 2026 @10:26AM (#50056940)
I think the economics just change drastically. A few years ago a helping programmer was great help and would implement something that was agreed to be needed to be done by the project or something very important for the contributor (the reason they spent the time to contribute). Now anyone can get a 20$ subscription and prompt away, but so do the project's core developers. So why should they bother separating the wheat from chaff? I totally understand that.
Dying of FOMO.
I'm waiting for someone to actually name something "Torment Nexus", which is the name of this phenomena.
Re:Denmark Data Breach Exposes 8.8M People's Personal Data on Monday October 05, 2026 @07:45AM (#49963602)
I think this is the worst part about it. Some company making a profit selling my data should be illegal.
But 700 euros almost gets you a microfreak and an sp404.

Maybe check their employees linkedin feed?
Re:Postgres AT TIME ZONE 'UTC' does NOT do what you think it does on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @08:49AM (#49908192)
Daylight saving changed the UTC time, because opening hours were always in local time.
I've seen a product where they used UTC to store opening hours. They had to rewrite all dates via a script twice a year.
Re:How Uber Protects Against Retry Storms on Friday September 18, 2026 @06:31AM (#49752389)
Ah, the classic tyranny of structurelessness.
I'm pretty sure it's already illegal to hack others.
Re:Neki on Friday September 11, 2026 @04:08AM (#49655041)
I scrolled through the landing page and even the "Get started" page and I have still no idea what is this. Is this a managed db? Something I can run myself? No idea.
Re:Splash-free urinals (2025) on Monday September 07, 2026 @09:24AM (#49598185)
I really like the inverted version, where it's almost guaranteed to splash yourself as a deterrent.
Re:Learn Programming with OCaml on Saturday September 05, 2026 @03:29PM (#49579822)
Why learn an instrument when you can just press play?
Re:IBM Bob on Saturday September 05, 2026 @09:36AM (#49576385)
It's Nokia again now, bought out Siemens' share more than a decade ago.
Re:Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns on Saturday September 05, 2026 @08:58AM (#49576098)
It's distributing malware, do not use any of the "TPB" sites.
This is not true. For example not every citizen can vote (people under guardianship or criminals) and not citizens can vote in local elections in the EU, if they came from another EU country.
Re:True Rate of Unemployment on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @08:06AM (#49535034)
People could use the fifth day to go to school.
Re:Dimethyl Mercury Exposure Incident at MIT on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @04:33AM (#49519471)
Oh fun, we have used it in school to etch PCBs. Right outside of the class room with no protective equipment of course. It was in a bucket.
Re:Pollen Robotics (Hugging Face) Microduck on Thursday August 27, 2026 @09:45AM (#49464846)
Finally an AI slop I can keep as a pet. I hate this dystopia.
Re:Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B on Thursday August 27, 2026 @07:32AM (#49463087)
It's called a private equity. :-)
It's the property of the display refresh rate.
I guess they just cut the spines to speed scan the pages with a machine and then the resulting pile of papers is no longer worth anything, so they just dispose of it.
