Re:I will no longer upload to NEW on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @08:05AM (#50257903)
Unfortunately, as we can see here isn't not just the corporate projects that are susceptible to people ignoring morals in the name of pRoDuCtIvIty. It's really sad to see Debian of all distros, who where one of the major sources of what it means for software to be free, to go down this road and so quickly.
Re:Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @07:56AM (#50257801)
You don't need to go full static linking. Just bundle every library that doesn't have string backwards guarantees or rather bundle everything except base system libraires. The same is also how things work on Windows (and thus Wine really). Wine won't be able to run a binary that links to some random libpng or whatever that the compiler found in your System32. The only difference is that Microsoft makes an SDK that gives your some idea of whats a system library you can rely on as well as the ability to target older versions than the system you are building on. The latter can be done on Linux as well but there is no-pre made SDK so the easiest solution ends up being a VM or chroot with older libraries.

Of course it can. It would mean not including some software or hard-forking it from pre-AI versions which would be difficult. But it can be done and I would seriously consider using such a distro if it was available.

Oh god they have invented useless hero images for tooltips. The images being slop is just the cherry on top.
Re:I will no longer upload to NEW on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @07:09AM (#50257339)
I don't think it "just so happens". AI enables that behavior at great scale and arguably even encourages it.

I'm constantly searching for the scroll bar position on mobile FF because its barely visible. And that's at least on a device where you can make the argument that horizontal screen real estate is limited, unlike a desktop PC where hiding scoll bars to save space makes zero sense at all.

> even implementing dark mode is a pain in the rear

You don't need to implement dark mode when all the controls already follow the users system color scheme. Dark mode is a signficiant regression compared to user-adjustable color schemes and another example of designers wanting to enforce their vision over the desires of the user.

That's really the big problem with the telemetry-driven designs today - the same raw data can be interpreted in whatever way you want so designers still end up doing what they feel like but can shut down any counter arguments (including complaints from real users) with "the data says otherwise".
Breaking news: Scientists discover night owls and how modern society enforces destructive day/night cycles on them.
Yes its sad to see how so many are giving up any pretense of having principles at the altar of instant gratification.
Reddit started as a place to share link to other people's projects that you find interesting - so at least two people find the project useful. That's very different from promoting your own crap.
> But nobody says you have to stop there.

Except that's exactly what the slop machine peddlers are saying. Why would you, a mere mortal, dare to question the decisions of the superhuman intelligence after all?

Re:PhysicsForums and the Dead Internet Theory (2025) on Monday October 26, 2026 @11:49AM (#50245798)
But what's the end game envisioned here? Turning the website into an LLM proxy and hoping enough suckers look at your ads instead of those from other sloperators?
I'm more surprised that is not more common. LLMs are pretty antithetical to copyleft as they allow anyone, including corportations, to exploit the labour people have original shared under the assumption that they are only sharing it with peers.
No, humans can learn to read and write english themselves and in fact most do that in school since its the lingua franca of the computing age. Not every community needs to include every last person on the planet.
Or you could be a decent person, respect their wishes to have an AI-free space and go somewhere else if that is not what you want yourself?
Re:Show HN: Making a smart TV dumb and then smart on Monday October 26, 2026 @10:25AM (#50244277)
TV speakers have been been absolute crap ever since TVs have been flat, good riddance.

I think we'll have to a accept that computer secuirty, just like physical security, can't rely entirely on preventative technical measures and have to amp up the deterrence accordingly.

Almost all buildings are not physically secure from unauthorized entry but life goes on.

Re:Everybody panic: A Valve developer said "HLX" in public on Monday October 26, 2026 @07:54AM (#50242207)
Meh. The Valve that made Half-Life and even Half-Life 2 doesn't exist anymore. I'm not confident that today's Valve would make a worthy successor.
Re:The result of the C++26 DIS ballot on Monday October 26, 2026 @07:48AM (#50242149)
In what way is making the program harder to read contrary to making the final program more efficient?
What you are describing is a deliberate strategy on the organization level.
It works in the same way that the mafia prevents your store from being wrecked.
Re:eMudhra to Exit Global SSL/TLS Certificate Business on Friday October 23, 2026 @11:59AM (#50211141)
Unlike Google, Mozilla, Apple, Microsoft and the gazillion of US-based CAs who right now can mint certificates not just for .com but also for every other TLD? Those are all not beholden to the US government in your mind???
Re:eMudhra to Exit Global SSL/TLS Certificate Business on Friday October 23, 2026 @11:57AM (#50211108)
Guess which third party is already required to "vouch" for your in order to get a DV cert from the web PKI mafia?
Re:eMudhra to Exit Global SSL/TLS Certificate Business on Friday October 23, 2026 @10:33AM (#50209764)
And those DOJ notices already have valid certificates today, because the CA racket is just a proxy for the real domain name authority delegated by ICANN anyway.
Re:eMudhra to Exit Global SSL/TLS Certificate Business on Friday October 23, 2026 @10:29AM (#50209695)
Of course there are such programs. They are just democratic and not decided by self-elected bullies (Google, Microsoft, Apple, Mozilla).
Re:eMudhra to Exit Global SSL/TLS Certificate Business on Friday October 23, 2026 @10:28AM (#50209675)
At least there is only one DNS root so we can work on securing that (or just pin the certts for the next level for anything that has any update procedure whatsoever).
Re:eMudhra to Exit Global SSL/TLS Certificate Business; on Friday October 23, 2026 @09:50AM (#50208973)
Yes. Absolutely.

Signed, someone not from the default country.

Re:eMudhra to Exit Global SSL/TLS Certificate Business on Friday October 23, 2026 @09:07AM (#50208404)
It would naturally move the selection of CAs from browsers to the respective governments which means reduced power for Microsoft, Google, Apple et. al and they will never allow that.

Yes, people keep pointing to CT as that prevents bad actors. It doesn't do that at all. At best it helps expose them after the fact.
