And if the market teaches us one thing, it is that GPU prices will drop over time. The current absurd prices is attracting competitors, and the more competitors, the lower the price.

I would not be surprised if, in 5 years, there's a neat, low-power GPU in high end laptops, alternatively, a cheap, say 500 USD or so, GPU in a box, that you can use for your AI-center at home or in the office.

Good luck trying to do science without a language.
Re:Postgres 19 is late, and it's AI's fault on Monday November 02, 2026 @04:54AM (#50334863)
This is the way! What also affects the decision is what the code will be doing, and how much extra functionality that you will never use (extra attack surface) you will get by importing external library after library.

Often it can be a very good choice to write the functionality yourself and not rely on external libraries.

"This is why banks are regulated, though I have no idea if/whether these platforms are regulated in any similar way."

Yep... that's why banks have never been robbed, never been hacked, and neer lost money! ;)

Wasn't it even a central bank that was hacked into a couple of months ago?

Thank god for regulation!

True for OP and true for Linus Torvalds. Is the solution to stop with open source, and never to publish anything? ;)
Re:I Don't Understand Quantum Physics (2018) on Sunday October 25, 2026 @07:07AM (#50230370)
This is the way! It is absolutely amazing that the supposedly "brilliant brains" at lesswrong and other similar outfits, have not learned about the difference between an interpretation and a theory.

Since QM goes beyond our material world intuitions, I am personally loathe to clothe nrs in words, until we have more and better experiments. I think prematurely translating it into material-level intuitions just leads to a waste of time and much confusion.

Re:Why Gopher in 2026? on Sunday October 25, 2026 @06:59AM (#50230318)
What are you missing? Just write a bot that pulls interesting content into gopher, and start filling it. Since the protocol is so easy, nothing could be easier.
It's because Canada and Denmark are less socialist than france. But generally speaking, what we are seeing is the end of socialism in the EU.

Yet again, socialism has failed to work, and it will always fail. When it fails, there are riots and violence.

We are seeing that EU companies are moving outside the EU, one recent example is that Volvo Cars are firing 2500 workers, and the EU laws and regulations will make this pattern repeat itself.

In the end, either EU will have to embrace capitalism, or it will break apart when nationalist parties promise that they have the easy solution, and do their own thing. I think actually breaking apart EU would be the best option.

Re:OpenBSD 8.0 on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @09:44AM (#50166338)
Excellent answer. Thank you very much. I will keep this in mind when the next life cycling of my current laptop happens. I will keep an eye on the core teams laptop experiments as well if there's anything about that available. Will search the mailinglists.
Re:OpenBSD 8.0 on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @05:28AM (#50163444)
Is it possible to get a modern filesystem with openbsd or are they still stuck in the past? Also, is it possible to run openbsd without jumping through hoops on a laptop from 2025 including suspend, graphics, web browser?

I want this to be the case, because the more Linux petrifies, the more a free BSD option is needed.

Re:Ukraine claims first drone evacuation of wounded soldier on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @05:24AM (#50163396)
Now add 100s or 1000s wounded at the same time, some can heal, and go back out to fight, some cannot, some will die during transport. The drone might be shot down, some areas are cleared. Simple? Not at all.
Don't feel bad. It is not about skill in those job, it is about "cultural fit". You must project a personality that will fit in with FAANG culture or you won't get the job unless you're famous globally due to having starting some huge open source project.

Comfort yourself with the fact that you did not have to sell your soul, sit through endless woke sexual harassment videos where you are taught that the white man is the source of all evil, and in endless management meetings.

Wonder if this will then be used to fulfill the dream of shooting ice bullets which then melt inside the victim, leaving less evidence. If memory serves, I think the CIA explored this at some remote point in time.

Ahh yes, the extreme intellectual humility of lesswrong and the EA guys! ;)

Maybe. We'll discuss it at the next board meeting and will let you know. // The Management
What? Rent linux iso:s for free? Good deal!
All countries are above the law. When was the last time you saw a country in jail or meaningfully punished? The only one who can punish a country is another country if they are powerful and violent enough.
Re:In Ukraine, distributed renewables foil Russia's assaults on Sunday October 04, 2026 @12:11PM (#49955159)
Lead times such as... 4 years? Sounds like light speed compared with a lot of other mega-engineering projects. Kashiwazaki-Kariwa 6 & 7, ~4.3 years.
Polish police and border agents are absolutely disgusting. They come straight from the soviet union. Avoid at all cost. I certainly wont be going back to poland any time soon. At least not by air.
Show me the UFO or it never happened!
Re:One Month Without AI on Saturday September 26, 2026 @10:11AM (#49856749)
Depends on how the AI is used. If used intelligently, for short, readable code snippets, reviewing and understand is easy.

If used naively, where AI spits out 1000s of lines of code, that is far from perfect, written in a style that might not be what you are used to, it can take longer to parse, than if your colleague of 2 years wrote it.

Re:One Month Without AI on Saturday September 26, 2026 @10:08AM (#49856722)
This is the way. Basically, what determines when to use AI or not is what you enjoy about the creative process. Do you only care about the result, use AI, and then spend hours (or days) fixing errors, tweaking, rewriting, using other AI:s to validate and improve the first AI etc. You get the result, and your activity consist of arguing with AI:s.

If you enjoy the craft and the creative process of actually coming up with new thoughts, instead of relying on the probabilistic combinations of thoughts of others, then you can just as well do it yourself and have full control of the process.

I use AI for low value work with dead lines, where the customers don't really care about the result either. For the golden services and customer engagements were I can tell the customer cares deeply, I use little to no AI, and then get a deep sense of fulfillment due to a job well done.

That is why the good lord invented acceptance tests.
Re:The darker side of being a doctor on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @11:16AM (#49817434)
"You might ask, why can’t you work less? It’s not as easy as that. If I decide to work less, who is going to cover the hospital? If the hospital aren’t employing other doctors, we can’t allow patients to go uncovered. I accept the fact that I have a duty of care to be on call. The intensity and personal damage of these on call periods are often forgotten."

This is a very short sighted and immature way of looking at responsibility and your "calling".

Yes, if you are not there, things will not happen. That is for the long term best. By thinking that it is your duty to be there, despite the state you are in, you are actually contributing to entrenching the situation you are in. That is error nr 1. Error nr 2 is that you are not fit for fight and are risking life and limb of others.

The only sane and long term way to deal with this is to opt out, and let the system crash, so that politicians (or hospital owners in case of private hostpitals) will add more resources. If you refuse this, you are sacrificing yourself for nothing.

Doing this take courage, resolve and maturity.

"Not only that, we are losing control of health care in general. Everyday, there’s a new form, a new guideline, a new protocol, a new health software, a new policy all dictating, restricting and modifying clinician activities. Some of these policies are written by people who do not see patients. There’s a whole paid industry dedicated to restructuring what doctors and nurses do to reduce costs and increase output."

This is just the corporate world. At least in IT. In terms of stupid web based training, it is best handled by dividing up the training and compiling a list of answers. Then the answers are distributed among the entire team. You only need to do one training, and the rest you click straight through to the questions. It used to save me and my team hours and hours every month.

This assumes you are mature and capable enough to identify that the courses are clearly nonsense and only there to please managers and button pushers. This was the case for 99.9% of all web based training I've ever had that I did not choose myself to do.

How can it be unfair? People are free to do what they want with their money. I think it would be unfair if you would be the judge of which projects I am allowed to donat to. That, if anything, is unfair.

If you want equal fame, invent your own programming language that will be used widely, and surely, you will get interest and people investing in your ideas. Just sitting and complaining however, is exactly the behaviour which would signal to me that I will never invest in your projects.

Brilliant! I cannot have this service, so I am happy that others cannot have it as well. You make me sick.
Re:Spain Orders Blocks on Archive.today and Its Mirrors on Sunday September 20, 2026 @06:28AM (#49774417)
Maybe not from the start, but definitely since the EU sunk its teeth into it. We can look forward to ID-controls for everything online, and monitoring of what we write. Should anyone deviate from the EU leftist narrative they will be fined, disconnected, imprisoned or all three.

The result is of course that the internet will split in two. The day-job internet, centered on earning money, and not on expressing thoughts. Then we have the darknet where ideas can be discussed freely, without the government monitoring you. Sadly this internet will never be accessible to the common man, who in time, will be taught never to discuss politics and ideas in public. We will get the kitchen table culture of the soviet union, all thanks to the EU now building out a massive surveillance machine with ID-verification, and chat control (which will eventually pass, be it under that name, or any other).

At least we now know that the EU and China are closer in terms of ideology and control than we first thought. It is sad, but such is life.

Re:Spain Orders Blocks on Archive.today and Its Mirrors on Sunday September 20, 2026 @06:23AM (#49774400)
