News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

a-no-n

It's irrelevant if they get eaten alive by Microsoft.

MacBook Pro's don't even have a touchscreen, which would be the least innovation necessary to keep their heads above water.

Right now, Apple is a sinking titanic like Woolworths.

Three straight quarters of sales in free-fall.

No significant new products.

Done.

Not necessarily. Japan recovered from nearly deforestation a-la Easter Island. Penalties and enforcement are required to prevent consequences of individual and collective externalities.

Re:The darker side of machine learning on Thursday October 27, 2016 @07:13PM (#12811289)
When machines acquire feelings, watch out. Your car or shaver may inconvenience or even kill you if you offend them.
Apple, as a laptop manufacturer, is done.

The company is continuing to regress, having lost its edge (SJ).

They're completely on the process bandwagon of requiring more accessories, having lost the beauty and functionality of clever, practical simplicity which advances the user experience, instead of making it crappier and inconvenient for change's sake.

Tim Cook's gotta go, they need a more forceful visionary than a bean-counter. MacBook Pro's need to consider detachable displays, alternatives to keyboards, other modes of interaction, so on.

Re:Vine will be discontinuing the mobile app on Thursday October 27, 2016 @07:02PM (#12811200)
Yup, it's business suicide. Probably people too inexperienced to handle success or have a clue where to go from where they're at. So they throw up their hands, shutdown servers, let people down and miss their shot. It's sad, like watching a train wreck.
Re:American Children Are Drowning in Self-Esteem on Thursday October 27, 2016 @06:59PM (#12811168)
"Self-esteem" is a nice way of saying American children are becoming more arrogant with fewer skill, lower performance and less experience than ever. Adults, teachers and mentors need to do more to put them in their place, for their own good. Respect is earned, not entitled to "special snowflakes."
Re:Ask HN: Would You Upgrade to the New MacBook Pro? on Thursday October 27, 2016 @06:21PM (#12810830)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) + (2) 1 GB SSDs + 16 GiB RAM + Banksy decal

Nupe. When they stop selling an upgradable MBP, they've lost me entirely. (Which is now.)

"Government (political), law-enforcement and security agency software company whom happens to use data-mining"

Perhaps this is shaking the trees of institutional/sovereign wealth funds/investors is in order to make them seem like they'll miss out.

IPO, these days, is a move of desperation and often a murdering of remaining agility.

Thx. For an encore:

and a .plist. Temporary hackaround.
Re:Faster and better browsing – Welcome Opera 41 on Wednesday October 26, 2016 @07:27AM (#12795585)
I hate to sound mean, but Opera feels somewhere between the Moller Skycar and a Dyson Hairdryer.

To be fair:

Chrome is fast and adopts tech fairly quickly but kills your battery and your privacy.

Firefox is private and supports new things, but wastes your time.

Safari is battery-efficient, but waste your time and tech lags.

(IE is shit.)

---

Conclusion: Pick your poison for the appropriate task and time.

Re:Task_t considered harmful on Wednesday October 26, 2016 @07:04AM (#12795497)
Ever since installing 10.12.1, I've been having a bunch of processes randomly entering a quasi-paused SIGSTOP-ish state (neither closable, apps not "bouncing" (loading) and just not responding. Running Instruments, correlating logs and such doesn't identify any clear cause. I'm having to `sudo kill -CONT -1` in order to get things moving again. I'm wondering if it's related to XNU mitigations or just some spurious "system configuration entropy" on my box.
Re:Advancing our amazing bet on Wednesday October 26, 2016 @01:42AM (#12794135)
IOW... They're going to make all Starbucks' WiFI slooower, just like they did with the city of Mountain View.

Thanks for almost nothing, Google.

TL;DR - humans are f'd*

*maybe, if not wise/able to constrain AI

Non-humans maybe (t/quad)rillionaires to eclipse us within our lifetimes because of the likelihood of runaway technological acceleration.

At the 1e9m systematic level, inorganic and hybrid sentient, self-replicating, self-improving systems seem an inevitable stage enabled by organic life.

It's slower than communicating with smoke-signals in a hurricane, or boxing up each bit and sending via the post.

Alphabet/Google needs to work on finishing an actual business that they start and scaling faster. Search, email, maps are mobile are pretty good, but the million other areas lack business drive, passion, hustle and focus, competing in areas with much deeper pockets (ATT+DirecTV+Time Warner+..., Verizon+AOL+Yahoo+XO+..., Level3, ...)

Re:OSVDB is shutting down on Friday October 21, 2016 @11:33PM (#12766998)
We need a little HN tree-shaking up some sponsors and crowdsourcing. This project is critical for web security.

UPDATE 1: uptime.com says currently down when it's actually up, maybe related to DNS propagation / GeoIP / long-distance monitoring.

Disclaimer: I have a bro crush on Ben Horowitz.

Exactly, they gave it a good go as a company but their burn rate was likely too high/too soon and differentiation insufficient (whether lack of actual novel features and/or communicating advantages in marketing). For example, a polar opposite of something like Couchbase which is used by giant enterprise shops to move away from Memcache and/or CouchDB.

It was also competing in a way Peter Thiel and Paul Graham warn about. Reinventing something without a vital quantum of improvement is like trying to juggle while climbing Half Dome.

I hope Rethink lives on as open source and adds MongoDB support. If they can hustle to encourage more people to try it by selling its obvious advantages, they have a slim but nonzero chance of rebooting.

Next time, gotta find more paying, alpha customers first and then start building. Then, try VC only after being capital-constrained when hiring/expansion/development is a blocker to realizing imminent profit. New category brands and segment-optimized products are riskier but more likely to be able to set up moats with defensible, competitive value.

Re:Ask HN: No mechanical escape key in new Macbook Pros? on Thursday September 29, 2016 @06:12PM (#12609221)
If there's no hackable non-Retina-like model with user-upgradable to 16 GiB of memory and dual SSDs, the MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) MD101LL/A will be the last MBP I buy. Overpriced, soldered-on memory is BS.
A long of the good ones left a long time ago.

Y! been stuck in a rut, coasting, like AOL for a long time... hence Verizon sees their old white grandaparents with email as a stable user base. Most old people won't change email addresses no matter what happens.

Re:OpenSSL Security Advisory - 26 Sep 2016 on Monday September 26, 2016 @09:00PM (#12586878)
A simpler, focused protocol framework and reference implementation with only necessary, useful options... something like that needs actual security people, users in embedded, enterprise, client/server apps would need to agree on it without falling into the trap of being hijacked by special interests, vague edge-cases and feature-creep. The issue would be that it's yet another/different standard, and TLS has most of the de-facto "market-share." That aside, OpenSSL and TLS are terrible because they're so poorly-managed, poorly-tested, poorly-validated, arbitrarily-featured and unplanned.

If SSL/TLS is a kitchen-sink, OpenSSL is Home Depot.

This is great to see as having likely validation. In 2009, I met some Russian guys whom moved to Long Beach specifically to do fractional freight-forwarding matching/auctioning startup to replace the crazy amount of manual paperwork and inefficient legwork involved in that industry at the time. I think they might've been much too early, and timing is one of the more important success factors.
