Ask HN: Is anyone else picky about which monospace font(s) you use?
I looked at and tried a bunch of different fonts in nvim: DM Mono, Jetbrains Mono, and 0xproto to name a few. I tried looking for good alternatives to Code Saver, especially free ones, but every time I switch back to Code Saver, I like it much more. I kept switching back and forth between a given font and Code Saver to see how much I really like said font rather than if I got used to it. It's...
Ask HN: Would ChromeOS exist if Windows was lighter and easier for sysadmins?
I've heard a lot about why to use ChromeOS over Windows, I think its two things that made it successful (especially in education): Its much more lightweight than Windows, faster and much higher battery life, & Much easier for sysadmins to manage many Chromebooks. If Windows had those before ChromeOS existed, would it be as appealing as it is or was? Personally I don't think so.
Ask HN: Were playing web videos without Adobe Flash possible before HTML5?
I was quite surprised to find out that the `<video>` element wasn't supported until HTML5, which didn't reach W3C recommended status until 10/2014. I did a bunch of searches for this, including before 2013, 2011 and 2008. The later showed no results. I found the `<object>` element which can play videos, but that seems to depend on browser support for the video formats (containers +...
Ask HN: What Vim habits did you need to unlearn?
If you don't use Vim, know that it has probably the steepest learning curve of any text editor (or at least non-IDE editors) and many users pick up habits along the way they need to unlearn.I'll start: I need to unlearn pressing `i` when I mean to press `a`. `i` moves one character back while `a` doesn't which is what I want most of the time. And apparently many users need to get used to `h j k...
Ask HN: Why aren't there design tools like Figma with live HTML+CSS previews?
Bidirectional live HTML + CSS previews: the app can show HTML & CSS as just 1-2 files and you can see edits on the HTML & CSS in the visual real time. I get the feeling I'm describing something that already exists but I didn't find it with my countless google searches.I have done lots of searching about this while deciding on vector editors for personal use. Sure there are website...
Ask HN: Should GitHub show messages on issue pages that a repo has been inactive
I also made a Github community discussion here: [https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/130119](https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/130119)I've seen many repos that haven't been updated in 1-5 years but has received many issues even recently regardless. I've even done that myself without realizing and until I've had comments pointing it out. It's clear that lost of users...
Ask HN: Will modern alternatives to Unix CLIs be succeeded? grep ripgrep find fd
*Tealdeer:** Many modern alternatives to Unix CLIs have appeared in the past several years, could there be a successor to tools like ripgrep, lke ripgrep is to grep? Or have we done the best we can for a CLI that searches for text inside files? * Would they be better of 70s Unix machines or would they lots of rewiriting? How much of the improvements in modern tools are the results of good...
Ask HN: What does Org Mode or Neorg do better than Obsidian with J.S. plugins?
I read a bunch of comments comparing Org Mode to Markdown and editors like Obsidian but there are some points I want to discuss. A big benefit Emacs Org Mode seems to be the built in functionality for things like tasks and times, but that can be done in Obsidian with plugins like Dataview, for every other functionality Org Mode has like that can be done with an Obsidian plugin. I've also read a...
