Re:Ask HN: What side projects landed you a job? on Sunday December 03, 2023 @10:00PM (#38513254)
In 2016, my second year at university, I was betting on the US elections. I'd collated multiple sources (FiveThirtyEight and a bunch of publications) to calculate each states swing and decided it would be a democratic sweep.

Unfortunately, I ended up losing a good portion of my savings I'd made developing websites over the years. I choose to take the night off to figure out how the make the best out of this situation, which ended up turning into TrumpTracker.

TrumpTracker [1] followed Donald Trump's Electoral Promises and kept the previous president-elect accountable for all actions and promises he made prior to his commencement. I deliberately open sourced [2] the project so that everyone could equally vote on whether a promise was comprised via GitHub issues. There was also a published iOS app for a bit.

Since I'd completed the project in 12 hours post election results it got picked up by the news cycle.

I enjoyed working on something at scale which collaborated with engineers, data scientists, and economists from all around the world, especially when the codebase was forked and used in other countries for their respective electives.

This project paved the way for a number of projects, as well as my current job, and also helped in securing my eventual O1.

IIRC the workflow targets macOS-latest, which is macOS Catalina 10.15 and the default host is `x86_64-apple-darwin`.

Does Github Workflow currently support M1 (arm 64 based). Am I missing something?

Tried checking out your writing, but it seems like your websites down. If you're extending your generosity to other commenters, I'd love to take you up on the offer :)
Re:How much is YouTube worth today? on Sunday November 22, 2020 @12:12PM (#25179051)
With ~745MM outstanding GOOG shares, I'll gladly take the 20x P/E ratio over the other _overvalued_ FAANG letters.

I understand if YouTube spins off they might have comparatively lesser shares, but it's an interesting thought experiment. Only time will tell.

tl;dr: no reputable sources to back this up, elections, gross quantity in USD$ is greater than the GDP of the state it was discovered in ~$224b. will theoretically not affect gold prices
Could you give more context to this story, perhaps a link?

I think this is a fantastic idea -- I hope the footage is getting archived for future viewers who can watch it at their pace -- 2/3x.

I'm sure fortune 500 companies will be alright with Tidelift analyzing their proprietary code.

I understand most of the switches, but unfortunately any gmail address you correspond with will eventually tag and index you. Its difficult to fully separate your email history from Google when the whole market has been colonized.

What I'm trying to say is your data will be accessible by Google servers regardless of which email service you use -- so why the paid switch?

Re:Towards Natural Language Semantic Code Search at GitHub on Tuesday September 18, 2018 @11:37PM (#18021504)
I've honestly moved to Google, adding

`{search query} -site:github.com/{repo}/{file i want to target}`

Its much clearer and concise.

Another reason for the redirect would be to mitigate the relentless web scraping which occurs. Some people just don't want to connect their apps with keys.
