Re:WTF Ubuntu? on Monday November 02, 2026 @10:15AM (#50337933)
Have companies been compromised because of this vulnerability? Ubuntu has an absolutely massive install base. The lack of notable incidents suggests that 9.8 might not reflect real-world well.

Maybe it's time for StealMyBitcoinV2…

This sounds like a huge feature though? Basically, a digital attorney–client privilege.

There's nothing self-hosted about relying on Cloudflare for _literally_ everything.

It's mentioned in video, here's an excerpt from FAQ [0]:

> Do creators disclose that a post is paid?

> Yes, every time. Every creator post we place carries X's paid partnership label. That is an FTC requirement for any post where a brand has paid or given something of value, and it is X's own rule for sponsored content.

Although, there are other services, that sound shady.

Re:Using Blu-ray M-Disk as Backup of Last Resort on Monday October 05, 2026 @06:53PM (#49971913)
> Just use a magnetic hard disk and your data will be fine for many decades if not centuries

It is absolutely not safe for many decades. If you haven't encountered any drive failures yet — you're lucky.

> A hard disk is cheap and stores several Terabytes

You should check prices again, I wouldn't say cheap considering price bump during the last year (or around so). M-Disks are way less convenient, but pretty reasonable for their cost.

Re:Make Tmux the OS on Saturday October 03, 2026 @03:16AM (#49942034)
I was reading this and thinking about it too — sounds like author wants a tiling WM but with a friendlier UX?

I honestly don't get why they ignore existing options due to configs. Give it a try, maybe it won't be _that_ bad.

Re:Sites in ChatGPT on Friday October 02, 2026 @01:47PM (#49936374)
Looks like a jab at Lovable.

Wonder what domain they're going to pick next. I feel like many LLM-dependent businesses are going to get sherlocked by OpenAI and Anthropic.

I don't think they are, and given amount of votes on each — seems like so does the community.

Regarding Lenovo: it's the first laptop with AirJet, sure, but it's not the first computer in general. Zotac released a mini PC with the very same AirJet in 2023. It looks dope, but it's just not that interesting or new.

Regarding Brax: Braxman is a well-known scammer. The world would be a better place if nobody paid any attention to this person.

Re:Shopify moves back to Native from React Native on Thursday September 10, 2026 @10:47AM (#49644671)
If you expect a story about how this migration to native went from technical PoV, they've already shared this: https://shopify.engineering/shop-app-migration

It sounds pretty solid, so I wouldn't expect anything to change in just 6 months.

Re:iPhone Duo on Thursday September 10, 2026 @07:46AM (#49642126)
But you probably want to do something on your phone after unlocking it anyway? It's solved by conductive gloves during winter, sure. Other use cases remain problematic.
> All you really need are easy to replace batteries.

They are easy _enough_ to replace already. Is it as easy as 20 years ago? Surely not. It also seems reasonable that something you're going to be realistically doing once per 3-4 years would require 1 or 2 hours.

Moreover, the regulation doesn't affect this process, apart from "no proprietary tools".

> That’s the only part that will wear out within a reasonable lifecycle.

Millions of broken screens and back glass/plastic panels beg to differ.

Re:Show HN: Open-Source eInk Bike Computer on Friday September 04, 2026 @04:10PM (#49569630)
Wow, this looks amazing!

I hope we can get a better suited hardware though. Larger buttons, smaller device overall. 4.7" sounds huge, almost size of a phone.

TV is a client. If I remember correctly, it shouldn't transmit anything (unless connected) other than probe requests during active scanning.

Which could still be illegal, but I don't think anyone will realistically investigate a low-power device sending a few packets occasionally.

Re:Mamdani Bans AI in NYC Schools on Thursday September 03, 2026 @02:15AM (#49546501)
Are you in an elementary school right now? If not, then I fail to see how this is relevant to kids using it there.
One controversial project supporting another controversial project. Wonder how and why that happened.

I am inclined to believe everyone sane will distance themselves from it. Just like GNOME did.

I believe it's more about money ending up in an overhyped vibecoded Bash mess maintained by a very controversial figure. And that's putting it mildly.
> distro

It's more like a set of dotfiles, but yeah.

Re:Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root on Sunday August 30, 2026 @02:04PM (#49501137)
Exactly! I was also surprised by this — that's a sensible default for many people.

However, I agree that it should be opt-in. Docs should be more explicit about that too, they should warn users about risks of going with that option. That excerpt mentioned in the article was rather misleading.

Re:Get your Windows license refund on Friday August 28, 2026 @10:21AM (#49478920)
> How about this: don't buy a product that you don't want.

How about laptop manufacturers stop making shady deals with Microsoft to force its OS on everyone?

It’s crazy how many passes these companies get. A huge number of them are still selling high-end laptops with Intel chips because they signed agreements that effectively prohibit them from offering AMD variants.

Let's stop pretending like any of this is acceptable.

Re:Tell HN: PayPal Blocks GrapheneOS on Thursday August 27, 2026 @09:10AM (#49464363)
As with all things about security — it depends on your threat model.

It reduces security of the app itself, but doesn't affect security of the phone by much.

Re:Tell HN: PayPal Blocks GrapheneOS on Thursday August 27, 2026 @08:57AM (#49464157)
eBay has been enforcing Play Integrity for over a year now. Luckily you don't lose much by using it in a browser.

I also get why they'd be desperate to fight bots. It's a weak excuse for not doing it better, but at least it makes some sense.

Re:Tell HN: PayPal Blocks GrapheneOS on Thursday August 27, 2026 @08:36AM (#49463815)
There are valid RASP techniques that involve dynamic code loading, so it actually makes a lot of sense. Source: I worked on RASP a long time ago :)

IMO headline is very misleading, and OP should have tried disabling all exploit protection options before jumping to any conclusions. PayPal isn't actively trying to block GrapheneOS as of now.

Re:Tell HN: PayPal Blocks GrapheneOS on Thursday August 27, 2026 @08:19AM (#49463565)
Still works for me.

I had to update exploit protection after their latest update — I think it was enabling dynamic code loading via both memory and storage that did the trick.

Edit: checked now, I have also disabled secure app spawning.

Re:How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @09:00AM (#49433279)
It’s even less sensible when you consider the effect that small businesses have on this. But I guess it’s just another heavily lobbied law, sponsored by companies responsible for 80-90% of packaging.
Would be nice to see some independent numbers and benchmarks. Apparently, Xiaomi announced this SoC today, so there's no 3rd party data about it.
