The distinctions between African-Americans and African Migrants are interesting. The migrant groups have higher incomes, lower use of welfare, better academic performance. There are some Black STEM programs in the US that are entirely filled with the children of African migrants.

Personally I think the African American community could use less BLM and more of the values and ideals of these migrant groups.

Re:Hong Kong: UK makes citizenship offer to residents on Wednesday July 01, 2020 @11:46AM (#23702758)
Aus and NZ are still in futile COVID suppression mode, so they are unlikely to be taking in a million Hongkies any time soon.

I'm sure they'll get around to it though - it will reinflate their property markets which have sagged a bit this year.

African Americans and Hispanics are hired at lower rates into the IT sector because they have poorer outcomes in school, particularly for mathematics.

How does racially-biased hiring address that other than just placing unproductive workers into roles they are not qualified for, with flow-on negative impacts to the rest of the company and society?

Why is it that migrants from poor countries like Ghana, Nigeria outperform African Americans, when those migrants have no connections or local advantages?

It would seem to me that there are fundamental cultural problems in some ethnic groups in the US (eg. father absence, 'acting white' meme) that if addressed would actually yield improvements. Deciding not to hire White or Asian workers at Google does not - instead it diminishes the achievement or any Black or Hispanic worker who was hired based on their actual capability instead of just their skin color.

68,000 victims of FGM in Germany: https://www.dw.com/en/female-genital-mutilation-report-shows...

First-generation South Asian mothers in Canada give birth to 142 boys for every 100 girls: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6227816/

There are multiple court cases filed against Infosys and other Indian companies in the US for racial discrimination in hiring practices.

These are real issues that we cannot brush under the rug.

The ultimate aim of these diversity projects is to lower labor costs - either by psychologically manipulating people into accepting lower wages, by focusing on conflict and alignment along racial lines instead of class lines, or simply to expand the available pool of workers.
There are a minimal number of excess deaths now associated with COVID, so what is the problem? Allowing the community to acquire immunity naturally during Summer is a good way to minimise the spread of the virus come Winter. COVID severity seems heavily linked with Vitamin D levels, so lockdown during Summer would possibly have been counter-productive for the general population.

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/excess_deaths.htm

Why should Governments force people into lockdown for a virus with a CFR of 0.26%, marginally more deadly than the Flu at 0.1%? In particular, COVID deaths are concentrated at those aged 70+ with existing health conditions, so broad-scale lockdown and enforced mask wearing doesn't make sense - when targeted support for the elderly and vulnerable would be effective and less disruptive.

Mao Zedong, Genghis Khan, Attila the Hun, Mohammed, Nelson Mandela, all responsible for varying amounts of human death and suffering - yet revered or worshiped today.
The video game industry is just like any other industry - sex, violence, corruption, success, failure. But because its so consumer-oriented, and probably because everyone who works within it is relatively young, everything receives excruciating attention.

The same stuff occurs in boring industries, but no one cares and it doesn't hit Twitter or Reddit.

An iPhone is a general purpose device compared to an iPod. But maybe Apple has lost the willingness to cannibalise its own sales for the sake of creating stunning new product categories.
Elon Musk is there too and he was never on a H1B. This title is misleading and it should be renamed.
African Americans are killed by police at the same or lesser rates than other races. However, they are killed at much higher absolute rates because they commit a significantly greater amount of crime. It doesn't take a PHD in mathematics to figure this out.

Here is just one data source from NYC: http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/downloads/pdf/analysis_and_plan...

Subjects firing on Police: 79% Black

Subjects killed by Police gunfire: 69% Black

If you want to tackle Black crime, start with decriminalising drugs, and then getting Black fathers back into marriage and raising their children.

Destroy the idea that being law-abiding, studying hard, and being regularly employed is 'acting white'. Scale back welfare to make all these things more attractive, and restrict immigration to direct more job opportunities to African Americans instead of Latin American and Indian migrants.

Why do we need to buy so many devices anyway? Why can't I just plug my iPad or iPhone into a dumb dock with a laptop screen and its own storage and battery, and use the CPU and GPU from the phone/ipad?
Re:How’s the Economy Doing? Watch the Dentists on Sunday June 21, 2020 @12:53PM (#23593222)
COVID-19 is endemic. Even if first-world countries like the ones you mention can control it, it just takes one infected traveller from a 2nd/3rd world country to restart the whole thing.

The reality is that COVID is a relatively minor ailment, which is not deadly for the vast majority of people - the CDC estimates its IFR at 0.26%:

https://in.dental-tribune.com/news/new-estimate-by-the-cdc-b...

There are already no excess deaths in the USA: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/excess_deaths.htm

I think its quite likely that without the media storm, we would have put it down as a really bad flu, once in a quarter century, and got on with life. Last time Sweden's death rate was this high was during their 1993 Flu pandemic (an event which is entirely forgotten).

If we value life, we are about to bring a huge amount of misery to the world from our lockdown policies, already pushing 71 million into extreme poverty: https://blogs.worldbank.org/opendata/updated-estimates-impac...

And allowing existing, mundane diseases to spread rapidly: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/14/health/coronavirus-vaccin...

The underlying factor is the aging of populations in the West. Look at the forecast age profile for Italy in 2050: https://www.populationpyramid.net/italy/2050/ about 13% of the population will be aged over 80! Mundane flu waves will kill scores of people, simply due to the demographics.

It is unfair to throw the rest of the planet's population under the bus to protect Baby Boomers in the West.

Its also remarkable that we can muster such effort to 'save' a fraction of the population, already sick and elderly, yet do very little to combat climate change which will impact humanity and the planet forever - not to mention the lives saved now from reducing air pollution.

The H1B is also not designed to support diversity or equality, which is crucial if we consider it a stepping-stone to long-term immigration (which many people want).

It would seem reasonable to place an intake limit of 10% from any one country, and limiting males to a maximum of 49%.

Right now, lets be honest, the H1B is giant immigration scheme for Indian males to get into the USA: 75% of applicants are Indian, and roughly 70% of applicants are male.

https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/people/three-...

https://www.computerworld.com/article/3050365/how-many-h-1b-...

With these kind of diversity requirements, it would also be much harder for crooked companies like Infosys to racially discriminate against non-Indians:

https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/ites/infosys-faces...

The green card lottery visa has diversity metrics built into it explicitly, which is probably why it receives minimal negative attention.

The willpower and genetic heritage of the poor and homeless isn't there. Most people at the very bottom are in that position because of mental or genetic problems. You cannot continue to throw money at it - you will end up with an endless burden. Instead just fund planned parenthood so that the cycle doesn't continue.
No excess deaths anymore from COVID-19 in the USA:

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/excess_deaths.htm

The excess deaths from COVID can be mostly explained by us having no flu season in 2019 or 2020

We can resume completely normal activity.

We need a grand strategy. Our first order of business should be to end the burning of fossil fuels, second order being to establish permanent presence beyond Earth.

Otherwise it feels like we are just twiddling our thumbs, redistributing wealth (upwards), and slowly dying.

Re:Time to Upgrade Your Monitor on Thursday June 18, 2020 @01:43AM (#23560120)
1440p, 75hz display is perfectly acceptable. If you game, the quality difference between 1440p and 4k is pretty much indistinguishable, but 1440p is much less performance intensive to render.

I upgraded from a 32" 1080p display to a 32qk500. A significant improvement in visual quality for a reasonable price (~USD$270)

Preparation for a male-only ethnic bioweapon?

The single best move Europe could make would be to limit any digital stores to maximum 12% commission. That would truly reign in the monopoly power of these platforms (typically American) and dramatically boost the revenues of content creators (many of whom are European).

12% covers the overhead costs of the stores and still allows a healthy profit for the monopoly owner.

I hope that next on the target list is Valve, who charges a 30% regressive tax on Indie games but allows big-budget AAA games to get by with only 20% tax:

Re:Fighting poverty accidentally stopped deforestation on Wednesday June 17, 2020 @08:28AM (#23550557)
That doesn't seem to be the case if you look at places like Egypt, where birthrates are not falling despite the country being relatively developed. A lot more of it is cultural and social, and whether people care about their overall impact on the environment.

Besides, we don't really have the time to wait until 2100, when some nations may advance. We need to link foreign aid directly to widespread family planning for African and West Asian countries.

Which will have the effect of depressing wages, increasing housing prices, and increasing social tension since the majority of those immigrants will be culturally alien.

Canada is a high-CO2 nation, more people = more emissions. It should be restricting migration to only other Western countries (where migration flows are likely to be two-way instead of one-way).

“You know, I have often thought that at the end of the day, we would have saved more wildlife if we had spent all WWF's money on buying condoms.”

- Sir Peter Scott, Founder, WWF (1909-1989)

If this cuts deaths by 1/3rd, isn't that totally sufficient to end all lockdowns and border restrictions immediately? The death rate looks basically like the annual flu with this drug, particularly when we consider that it will just be one bad season then fairly minor from then on, when much of the population gets natural immunity.
Re:Why are there so few black people in STEM? on Monday June 15, 2020 @10:50AM (#23527895)
Infosys is in court again for racist discrimination against non-Indian applicants:

https://www.deccanherald.com/business/business-news/another-...

Black unemployment hit an all-time low this year:

https://assets.bwbx.io/images/users/iqjWHBFdfxIU/irUjPx0BNBh...

Which is partly thanks to tougher enforcement action against illegal immigrants:

https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/410/cpsprodpb/A67A/production/...

If you want to help Americans, particularly Black Americans, the H1B visa needs to be ended, the refugee intake reduced to <10,000/year, the wall built, birth citizenship ended, and mass deportations of illegal immigrants to take place across the USA.

Re:Why are there so few black people in STEM? on Monday June 15, 2020 @10:44AM (#23527834)
End the drug war, legalise marijuana and decriminalise everything else, send Black men to get married and raise their kids instead of sitting in Jail.

Only 36% of Black kids live with married parents: https://www.pewresearch.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/FT_18...

Stop giving additional welfare to single-parent households.

Microfibers usually use plastic bottles and other containers sent for recycling. We need to simply eliminate that stream of waste. Banning single-use plastic is an absolutely necessary step - but the effort needs to be global, or at least rich countries need to force major polluters (Coca Cola etc) to act globally if they wish to retain access to local markets.
Re:Jim Keller to Depart Intel on Friday June 12, 2020 @01:47AM (#23496409)
Intel's problem is that they fired expensive, older American workers and replaced them with H1B contractors.

There's a video on AdoredTV about the topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agxSclh27uo
