I have the same issue in video games. I always end up at the end not having used my unique items because I only have 1.

> It is a good idea to apply for your child's Social Security number and birth certificate at birth. If you apply at the hospital, the state agency that issues birth certificates will share your child's information with us. Then, we will mail the Social Security card to you. If you wait to apply, there may be delays while we verify your child's birth certificate.

Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @08:10PM (#50331791)
IIRC if I do this on my Bravia I also lose the image enhancements.
Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @08:05PM (#50331763)
I use ProjectTV as an alternative launcher. No ads.
It's happening everywhere. All these apps who try to be endless rent-seekers, injecting themselves in a process where they have very little to add.

I don't need a platform that takes 25% off of the handyman that I call. All that happens is that I pay 25% more. And if the platform becomes large enough it'll set policies that the handyman cannot offer lower prices outside of the platform...

We used these: https://apricorn.com/aegis-padlock-usb3

They work well in high security environments because you can allowlist the vendor and product id of only these hard drives, and you don't have to set up procedures where people HAVE to encrypt their drives before use.

So cost-wise it makes sense.

But for personal use? BitLocker / VeraCrypt all the way.

Very sad. I'm about 50% in taking the old Red Alert 2 and get to something that would've resembled the original source code.

Given the rumors that the source code has been lost (and the fact that they open sourced the games before Tiberian Sun & Red Alert 2, and the ones after those), I felt like I was using the tokens for 'good'.

We'll see when it actually stops.

Well, usually the answer is no, and then when something breaks the app will tell me.

Which reminds me. Why does the CVS app need access to Bluetooth?

Which is why the long-term reviews make much more sense.

The car reviewer needs to get over the honeymoon phase of this new shiny gadget.

Many places I toured offered $5 starbucks gift-cards for a review.
I think small accidents == large bills is caused by the amount of sensors and crumple zones in cars.

Layered on top of that is the massively increased cost of parts and labor to install the parts and paint them. And cars aren't really made to be taken apart easily.

Then there is the issue of availability of parts, especially in newer cars.

All of that makes it so that there are a 100+ cars outside the body-shop I frequently pass by. Because of the speed (or slowness) of the pipeline, body-shops need to be a certain size. Then insurance tries to squeeze them, and people don't get paid enough for the work they actually do.

So that's why your repaired bumper is 2 tints darker than your body. No-one has the time to properly blend the paints.

Re:Tailscale SSH: Investigation and remediation update on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @06:38PM (#50266860)
On the road I find WireGuard to be quirky when connecting to DNS names. When I'm on an IPv6 only network (like T-Mobile), connecting to a DNS name that offers A and AAAA, WireGuard on iOS prefers the A record, making me connect over one of T-Mobile's 464XLAT proxies which time out after x minutes. This then makes the connection look dead until I do something on my phone that re-enables it.

Tailscale doesn't have this issue.

Welp, that explains why they ghosted me after the interviews. And they went very well.
It is also expensive because the debt is very hard to get erased through bankruptcy, so private companies are now offering more money to people than is actually needed. So universities see this $ and raise prices.

Kinda like how tax breaks on housing initially help people, and then the market adjusts based on the new inflow of $.

Re:Scoop: Unvetted AI agents are accessing U.S. bank accounts on Thursday October 22, 2026 @08:15PM (#50202910)
This wouldn't be needed if banks supported something like PSD2.

I would love to connect systems to my bank in a safe way, but I can either do this, release the AI (I don't by the way) or shell out money to a service like Monarch, which relies in Plaid for all of its connections.

The banks brought this upon themselves.

Re:A complete bypass of eMudhra’s 1FA OTP login system on Thursday October 22, 2026 @03:46PM (#50200099)
There was an post about something like this a while back on lobste.rs, where some people were upset about the image that Anubis shows while it is validating your machine.
This is more general issue in the USA. How do you prove who you are? Your driver license / identity card doesn't have a chip, so given enough information about someone else you can sign up as them.

Compare that to say a large part of the EU where people have an identity card with a chip, which has a PIN. It allows institutions to read the chip, and that chip cannot be easily faked (PKI). The photo is on the card and on the chip, so they have to match.

Also, more importantly, all of these financial apps popping up is because the normal banking system is too slow moving for the modern requirements, something the EU has also solved with the SWIFT system.

Re:Maybe There Was an Egg Cartel After All on Monday October 19, 2026 @11:02AM (#50153354)
Unsure about eggs, but they definitely have their own rotisserie chicken farm and plant.

Story goes that Tyson's chickens were becoming larger and larger and thus Tyson wanted more money.

Costco wants to keep the chicken at $5, so they starter their own plant.

Well, if we want more drinking water we might start boiling salt water with electricity.
Can I do the same for like EcoBee?

I bought them a year ago and today they showed me an ad ON MY THERMOSTAT.

Re:Siri is so bad at everything on Thursday October 15, 2026 @02:28PM (#50108068)
Or you open the Weather app, it updates, you walk somewhere without cell phone reception, open the weather app again, and it shows the old temperature, and suddenly it shows --. Temperature gone. WHY?
Re:AI is a tool and using it well takes skill on Monday October 12, 2026 @06:12PM (#50063795)
As someone laid off just now, I wish companies saw this. I genuinely don't know where to go with my 'skills' as a software engineer, both pre and post AI.

The market is shrinking, the pressure to review code is so high, I'm kinda relieved to not be at the $last_place anymore, but looking on LinkedIn or calling around my network... there isn't a lot out there.

Re:I'm sorry, but you still have to think on Sunday October 11, 2026 @02:25PM (#50046222)
Sadly not my experience. When I give this kind of feedback on a document, highlight a gap, or give constructive feedback, most of the time this feedback is fed back to the AI and a new revision of the document shows up.

BUT because it is AI it's not that section that's addressed, it's about 90% of the document that now has changed, and I need to spend another gargantuan effort to review it. It's like by trying to be helpful I actually lose more time.

The AI has made it so that the thinking before writing is mostly gone, and shifted that step to the reviewers.

Re:Ask HN: Why aren't Americans rising up against tipping? on Saturday October 10, 2026 @09:37PM (#50038972)
I've drastically reduced my tips. I'm done with this system in the USA where they are allowed to advertise price X, but you're expected to pay X+Y, where Y might be a fee or a % of X.

And the way the system is trying to sneak it in everywhere more and more makes me revolt even more.

Last time I was in a restaurant and I tried to pay with the QR code thing it suggested I paid 20% tip on top of the total + tax. Tip is supposed to go on the part before tax. Sneaking it in makes it so that the people working there think they get paid better, without the employers paying their fair share.

It should be on the employer to ensure that (s)he is properly remunerated for the work (s)he does, not the customer who has no insight in that contract.

But isn't it understandable? You work your whole life to buy a piece of property. But not just a piece of property anywhere. It's a specific one, in a specific neighborhood, in a specific zone. All of these things tie into the $ that you paid for that property. Regardless of the change in value, a change there impacts how you perceive living there.

If all of the sudden the neighborhood behind you gets rezoned to industrial and you get a datacenter nearby, everybody understands you're up in arms.

If at the same time the neighborhood behind you gets converted from 200 single-family homes to 200 8-plexes, complaining is NIMBY. Even though it has the same dramatic impact on the quality of life you bought into. Way more noise, way more street parking, cars racing late at night etc.

Re:Triple-A Minesweeper on Saturday October 10, 2026 @12:13AM (#50029492)
It's also missing overly shiny textures and the horrible delayed input on Unreal games...
In AZ a victim impact statement is given after the defendant has been found guilty, but before the judge sets length of the sentence.

The rules of evidence don't apply to the victim impact statement.

So was it thrown out because it was AI? If so, could the family have hired an actor to do the impersonation?

Was it thrown out because the judge said he loved it?

To my understanding the victim impact statement must be authentic. How can we know if that is how the victim would've reacted?

Making an AI / actor say: I believe in another life we could've been friends is different from the sister saying: I believe you and my brother could've been friends in another life.
