Ask HN: 7 months out from CS bachelor's degree. Advice on next steps?

I understand that these variables have a rich and long history, but if you have ever heard a professor or anybody else say "foo" in lecture you will understand why I detest them.

They have absolutely no connection to the matter at hand. Since foo is often used before bar, you would think there is an ordering between the two but there doesn't have to be. They are hard to pronounce and easier to confuse.

Whenever I give an example I use variable names that actually make sense and are related to the example. I'm glad that I have been fortunate to not see "foo" and "bar" anywhere in all of the code I've seen in recent memory.

Thank you!

Feedback on this 1-credit React course I'm teaching this semester?

I'm a final-semester computer science major in the USA. I'd love your feedback and advice on this 1-credit class that I'm teaching on React JS.https://imgur.com/a/intro-to-react-1-credit-course-syllabus-fall-2024-KT98p0VI'm teaching and managing this course all by myself. I'm doing it primarily for the resume boost (to get a job and failing that get into a decent cs master's program)....

Ask HN: What "project" should I work on to get a SWE job?

I'm a senior CS major, looking for internships for the summer and also of course a full-time job for when I graduate in December.I keep being told to do some projects or something. But what exactly should I do?I'm kind of worried because outside of class I never code for my own sake. Feel like in class we are always working on some project, often complicated projects, but no employer wants to...

Ask HN: What does it mean to be a good communicator?

There's that stereotype of programmers who are "not good communicators". Every job description I've come across also always mentions how the candidate needs to have "excellent communication skills".What do the wise folks of HN think about this -- what does it even mean to be a good communicator both personally and professionally?

Nitrome was the best! I especially loved their Steamlands game. You build these tanks to fight pirate tanks in a steampunk England.

A real benefit of the Socratic method is that those magical moments of insight are all yours. You discover a new insight yourself, guided along the way.

It's more fun and exposes any weaknesses. It's easy for the student to say they know something when they actually don't. Drawing links themselves exposes everything. Then a quick detour can fix the foundation before continuing.

It's also very effective for large classes. You are forced to pay attention, because the teacher could call on you at any time.

I recommend everyone read "Surely You're Joking Mr Feynman."

The parts on Brazil were particularly interesting.

This is really cool. First thing I looked for was a Wordle-type "share" button.

Maybe add a Wordle-style share button? Then everyone can play this with their friends.

Re:Ask HN: Pre-CS, Any Ideas? on Wednesday February 02, 2022 @08:18AM (#30177074)
Thanks a lot for your detailed advice.

Problem is I don't have access to a laptop. It's not allowed inside the base.

Can I do these things with just a phone, internet connection, and Kindle?

Ask HN: Pre-CS, Any Ideas?

I'm a conscript. I was conscripted after finishing high school, before college.I've got three months left in the army. I want to do something that will be useful towards a computer science degree. In the army base, I can't access a laptop. Only a smartphone with an internet connection and a Kindle.Do you have any ideas?

I thought widespread cocaine usage in the 70s was just a joke.

Turns out it was actually a thing.

Whatever scares you, go do it.

I really want him to succeed, but I think coffee is about the "sexiness". You hand-grind the beans, get a beautiful french press on your counter that declares you are a coffee connoisseur, and then savor the end result.

His idea is like making ice-cream; you've got a monstrosity on your counter which you ignore until it's done. You also don't use it often.

But then you don't have the same ability to add flavors and mess around like you do when making ice cream.

Re:If You’re So Smart, Why Aren’t You Rich? on Friday November 19, 2021 @04:15AM (#29275281)
Fascinating, but I'm not sure about the assumptions. This model mainly doesn't account for risk in the calculation.

The company owner might only work twice as much as the 9-5 salaryman. But he increases the value of his equity, while the salaryman just draws a monthly salary.

Eventually that equity is valued at millions by investors, and that is how the company owner becomes rich. Or it could be valued at zero.

Meanwhile, the salaryman is not even exposed to any of these extremes because he never took the risk.

True, I'm procrastinating on doing some writing. This is a helpful reframe

All fantastic ideas, thanks. Not that they're the same, but heroin addicts replace heroin with methadone. So that's probably the best solution, to replace instead of just abstain. The devil finds work for empty hands and all that

Ask HN: How to Treat Reddit Addiction?

While I am not stealing money to surf Reddit, I am slacking off my personal projects to do so. I would like to cut it completely out of my life.I would like a way to stop being addicted to browsing Reddit, especially r/popular. I have a Firefox browser extension that thankfully blocks access to r/popular, r/all etc. but I still search up random subreddits in the search bar.The biggest problem...

Re:Ask HN: Should I study CS or Law? on Friday October 22, 2021 @10:10PM (#28965039)
Thanks for the advice.

For the country's bitch part, I've got a green card waiting for me in the USA if I choose to study there. I fly in, and I'm already a permanent resident and then a citizen in five years. So hopefully that should work out

Re:Ask HN: Should I study CS or Law? on Friday October 22, 2021 @10:09PM (#28965028)
Thanks for this, I agree with everything you've said here. I agree that business skills will ultimately lead to wealth, but I would like to have a degree and be a graduate first.

I know it's going to be a struggle, and I hope I enjoy it at least a little bit if I follow through with CS. Employment is definitely not a good road to wealth, but with CS maybe I will learn those technical skills to make something of value later on.

Re:Ask HN: Should I study CS or Law? on Friday October 22, 2021 @10:03PM (#28964988)
Thanks a lot for your advice. Interesting that you can't get rich with cs in all countries, but I think that in the USA at least I should be able to launch a business or something.

Thanks for the reassurance and sharing that you did it for the money and were only mildly interested like how I am right now. Hell, from what you've described it even sounds like I might enjoy it o.O
