I ran an instance of this for about a year. It is super cool and pretty easy to manage. It was more than I needed - I was using it as just a photo backup and then a way to share photo collections with people - and pretty expensive to run on digital ocean.
Re:The Glorious Return of a Humble Car Feature on Thursday April 27, 2023 @09:52AM (#35728117)
I know car software is an afterthought for companies because most consumers don't make their car buying decisions based on how good the software is, but if any company made truly intuitive car software, I would be won as a customer.
Re:GitHub Copilot emits GPL code on Friday April 21, 2023 @04:08PM (#35659321)
I imagine because by paying for Copilot you offload some of your legal liability to github
Definitely thought this was about the kid's book.
Wow, another AI utopian vision from Silicon Valley that glosses over the real-world consequences. Khosla's all too convenient optimism fails to confront the harsh reality: private companies hoarding AI technology, reaping insane profits, and leaving workers in the dust.
Re:The Twitter API is now effectively unmaintained on Thursday March 30, 2023 @12:43PM (#35375526)
I stopped using it not long after he took over, not because of any principled objection just because how much crap I had to sort through to get to anything worthwhile had greatly increased.

"CryptoKremlin announces Layoffs of 20% of Workforce" by ChatGPT

CryptoKremlin, a leading Russian crypto company powered by OpenAI's GPT-3, has announced plans to lay off 20% of its workforce due to challenging market conditions and a need to restructure. The CEO acknowledged the difficult decision but emphasized its importance for the company's long-term sustainability and success.

CryptoKremlin was known for leveraging Rust programming language to attract top talent and build superior systems. The company's utilization of Rust, known for its performance and security features, allowed them to create highly reliable and secure solutions. This focus on engineering excellence with Rust technology was a key factor in the company's success and helped set it apart from the competition.

The crypto industry has faced challenges during the pandemic, but CryptoKremlin had managed to perform well, largely due to its investment in GPT-3 technology. The model has revolutionized the natural language processing space, allowing the company to build highly scalable and secure solutions.

The crypto community was disappointed by the layoffs, but CryptoKremlin remains optimistic and confident in its ability to drive innovation and growth in the space. The restructure is expected to position the company for continued success in the years to come.

Re:CEO Jack Altman’s email to lattice employees on Thursday January 12, 2023 @01:28PM (#34358192)
Accountability would be the CEOs of these companies stepping down after they've made enough mistakes (both hiring too much and then not reaching growth targets). As usual workers get screwed and management coasts on unaffected.

Would love to have a practice mode where I can play an unlimited number of times
After reading the comments in this thread it is clear that people are not current with how ECT is administered in the modern era.

1. You are under general anesthesia 2. The dosage of electricity is very low when compared to how it was done before. 3. The electrical currents are far more focused

Stuff like personality changes or loss of creativity is no longer a risk factor. Risks tend to be those associated with general anesthesia and mild memory loss around the treatment.

I had over 2 rounds of 15 treatments over a 6 month period. I haven't had a serious relapse in the 5 years since. I had tried every SSRI and SNRI my insurance would cover. I had been in therapy for over a decade. I was suicidal. ECT saved my life.

I had ECT and it was absolutely life changing. Only thing that ever worked for me. Mild headaches with each treatment and my memories of the time of my treatment is fuzzy. But I think we probably should be investigating why it works so well.
Re:In Canada it's illegal to call yourself software engineer on Friday October 14, 2022 @02:20PM (#33207033)
There are some US states with similar provisions (FL I think is one) but it isn't really enforced.
Re:Swag in the Tech Industry on Monday June 27, 2022 @06:19PM (#31901611)
I generally hate swag, but my company gave me a coffee mug that is the best mug I've ever used.

Cost of college is not the major cost of kids. Daycare can be in excess of 2,000/month.
My wife is also pregnant and this is the first baby-name app I don't hate.
The only person to be upset at is the one who didn't put access control on the site. That was a publically available endpoint. The better analogy is putting something private on a public bulletin board and being mad if someone read something you didn't want them to.
The politicization of COVID was the final straw for. me. I have no more faith in humans in a collective sense. I don't see how we can expect democracy to work when people are willfully ignorant of their world and unwilling to do the work to learn.
It doesn't mean I am there illegally though. Maybe I am there for some other reason and I thought you wanted to to let me in.
An ssn is considered private info, the plan number wouldn't be.
Re:Alcohol-free beer is fizzing on Friday July 09, 2021 @03:03PM (#27787288)
I don't think I can physically drink enough NA beer for it to be an issue :D
Re:Alcohol-free beer is fizzing on Friday July 09, 2021 @12:14PM (#27785252)
I don't drink because of a medication I take and I miss beer with certain types of food. For so long the best available was beer flavored water. It makes me so happy that I now have a wide range to choose from.
This seems like an answer from someone who filters the industry through Hacker News.

Java's market share is still huge. Clojure never really had a big market share and Ruby is still very popular.

Re:Climate change could make many US homes uninsurable on Tuesday December 10, 2019 @03:59PM (#21756797)
Providing state insurance for these homes won't fix the problem. We need to start subsidizing residents to move away from areas that climate change will render inhospitable.

Look at the comments here. This website is essentially a bunch of Ayn Rand novels come to life.
Re:A Facebook request: Write a code of tech ethics on Wednesday May 01, 2019 @10:45AM (#19797442)
No, that is ridiculous. Missals made in the US are used to fight illegal wars in the middle east and sold to dictators committing genocide. Stop drinking the nationalism kool-aide, we aren't the good guys.
Re:A Facebook request: Write a code of tech ethics on Wednesday May 01, 2019 @10:33AM (#19797326)
The planes needed to drop those bombs have software too.
Re:A Facebook request: Write a code of tech ethics on Wednesday May 01, 2019 @10:28AM (#19797271)
Making missile guidance software is wholly unethical and is what we should be striving to prevent engineers from working on.
I think it is time for tech workers to force their companies to pursue an agenda that is in-line with the worker's ethics. We are highly paid, we are also highly valuable to the US economy. If we can effectively unionize - we can use that leverage to pressure the government to act in ways we support with regards to surveillance and climate change.
