Ask HN: How to fix procrastination?

I think procrastination is one of the biggest unsolved problems. PG has it, tries to fix it and fails (http://paulgraham.com/distraction.html). Millions of hackers and maybe billions of other people have this problem.I tried to make tools to help me (internet blocker, kind of "todo" list etc) but nothing works consistently. Like for PG everything fades away and fails after some time.Today i...

Re:AskHN: Current state of cross-platform mobile development? on Wednesday December 25, 2013 @12:19PM (#6963457)
Adobe AIR works great, has support for some phone features build in, all others can be added using native extensions.

Skinning can be done very well, and the app could also run in the browser via flash.

The bad part is, AIR is relativly slow on older mobile devices.

Well done Troy!

Artwork looks really nice how was that done?

Re:An Empirical Evaluation of TCP Performance in Online Games on Saturday November 16, 2013 @05:42PM (#6746709)
I call that thing bullshit. "Our analysis indicates that TCP is unwieldy and inappropriate for MMORPGs" yet World of Warcraft, Lineage I/II, Guild Wars, Ragnarok Online, Anarchy Online, Mabinogi all use TCP. Extremly successful. I using UDP would have help making World of Warcraft better they would have done it years ago. But they all probably have no idea right?

What is the best/cost effectiv way to backup a windows server?
You should have added some text point to your website in that hot linked image. If they are hotlinking your stuff its ok to put some advertisment in it. Probably would not have saved the business. Thanks for your honest story

If you dont want to do your skilled job (programming) you can probably only do unskilled work and that is low pay

Flash and Flex are EXTREMLY stable and easy to maintain for my projects. Maybe it is not Flash/Flexs Fault but yours ?
Re:New Java 0-Day Vulnerability Being Exploited in the Wild on Saturday March 02, 2013 @07:00AM (#5309280)
99% of all Webbased gaming is flash. Why? Because HTML5 is about at a point where flash was 5 years ago. Thats not just my opionion but facts (see all game portals, FB game etc.) and what the big guys say (http://www.wooga.com/press/releases/wooga-html5-project-goes...)

Re:PHP Fog to be discontinued on December 21st on Tuesday November 13, 2012 @02:20PM (#4780010)
I had the worst experience with appfog/phpfog. They ignore emails and state things on their hp that are clearly not true (like they would support .NET which they are not).

Should have been warned whem some time ago a 15year old hacked their system and controlled all their servers.

Oh yes! Thats why flash has 99% penetration, because nearly everyone needs it.
Extremly lagging. Let me guess, Node.js?
Re:The Most Important Parts of HTML5 on Saturday August 11, 2012 @10:56AM (#4370203)
You dont need any proprietary software to code and make flash. Just use the flex compiler and code in any text editor. The flex compiler can do flash apps without flex also and has some pretty nice sintactical sugar things like two way databinding if you want it.
Re:The Most Important Parts of HTML5 on Saturday August 11, 2012 @10:53AM (#4370197)
You can 100% emulate Websockets in Flash if you wanted, essentially librarys like socket.io use a flash fallback that does that. If you do a flash only game/app you probably just avoid the websocket overhead for faster development and better bandwith.

Raw sockets pass through firewalls and proxies exactly as good as websockets.

Like what?
Re:The Most Important Parts of HTML5 on Saturday August 11, 2012 @09:51AM (#4370082)
So lets compare the most important features that HTML5 might bring to what flash offers:

1. Faster Javascript Engines

AS3 in Flash Player 9 (2006) has about the same speed Javascript has now. There are about as many benchmarks showing AS3 beeing faster, then there are the ones showing Javascript beeing faster. Speed seems to be about the same

2. WebSockets

Has been in Flash since 2006

3. Binary Data Types (Typed Arrays and Blobs)

Has been in Flash since 2006

4. Web Audio API

Has been in Flash way longer

5. Canvas 2D Context

Has been in Flash since like forever ago

6. CSS3 and WOFF

Nothing really specific but Flash has most all of that since years

7. Local Storage, Offline Applications and the File APIs

Since 2006/2008

8. Web Workers

Will come with Flash 11.4 soon.

9. SVG 1.1/2.0

Vectors are at the core of Flash

10. WebGL

Stage3D is in Flash since 2011

So just stop hatin Flash and love the browser independent possibilities.
