You click the link, then you are redirected to a academic paper landing page, then you have to know to look over on the right hand side for a url that is just a random sequence of numbers, and click that to actually get to the content. This is not something that is designed for non-technical people.
People use steam because they actually like the software. It isn't a big mystery.
Re:Egoless Mathematics in the AI Era on Monday November 02, 2026 @02:59PM (#50342789)
Crazy to see AI slop being posted on tao's blog.

Isn't it strange how the AI disclaimer is at the end of the writing instead of the start. Almost as if they are trying to hide it.

Re:Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen on Monday November 02, 2026 @02:02PM (#50341862)
Slightly terrifying.

ai;dr

Can someone explain why ai gen comments are not allowed on this site but ai gen articles are?

Maybe in a stroke of poetic symmetry all the programmers being replaced by AI will find work as cybersecurity professionals defending against AI.
Re:Pray for Chaos on Monday November 02, 2026 @09:28AM (#50337286)
It's pretty easy to imagine them creating a new AI that is an order of magnitude better than the current models with no one else having access to that technology.
I think there is still roughly the same number of worthwhile games that get released each year, they are just buried by a ever increasing pile of shit.
Re:Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:05AM (#50336296)
Exactly, humans can work all the menial manual labour jobs, and the robots can take all the fun creative jobs. Win-win for everyone.
>This is like claiming that the web is a failure in 2001.

AI will finish what the web and social media started I guess.

All anyone seems to be able to make with AI is tools to optimise AI usage.
I don't care.
Such a funny story! Anyway how's your sex life?

ok.

Re:GPT-5.6 Sol can beat Factorio on peaceful mode on Sunday November 01, 2026 @05:33AM (#50324298)
For the purposes of launching a rocket the player character's inventory is vast.
Re:GPT-5.6 Sol can beat Factorio on peaceful mode on Saturday October 31, 2026 @07:32PM (#50321288)
You absolutely cannot let the player get any whiff of AI slop so the integration needs to be extremely delicate. Watching a film and noticing a person has 6 fingers in a scene would instantly kill any engagement someone would have with it. For it to remain as art it must always be fundamentally about human-human communication, I want to have a conversation with the game developers through the game, not with a LLM. If developer intent ever becomes muddled the game has failed.
Re:It's the Memory Latency, Stupid on Saturday October 31, 2026 @07:16PM (#50321186)
Okay, but google search has only gotten worse for decades.

So your argument is that game engines will just decay.

Re:It's the Memory Latency, Stupid on Saturday October 31, 2026 @05:30PM (#50320432)
I think it was just studios competing with each other in the 2010s to see who could make the biggest most ambitious game worlds. Leading to ballooning dev costs and then a feedback loop of higher production costs leading to safer design decisions.

There was also a heavy emphasis on games being "cinematic" which necessitates photorealistic rendering.

AAA games have been pretty artless for a while now baring a couple exceptions.

Re:HackerTube: YouTube built from videos recommended by HN on Saturday October 31, 2026 @05:21PM (#50320369)
His last video was ~1 year ago which by the standards of late career youtubers isn't that long ago.

Hbomberguy's last video was 3 years ago for instance.

Re:It's the Memory Latency, Stupid on Saturday October 31, 2026 @04:26PM (#50319787)
If everyone stops writing game engines then who is going to program unreal engine/unity/godot?
Re:GPT-5.6 Sol can beat Factorio on peaceful mode on Saturday October 31, 2026 @03:58PM (#50319522)
To them the player character is just as good as a belt for transporting materials.

The player character actually does have an extremely high capacity so if you are constantly running between chests your factory will still be reasonably high throughput.

Re:GPT-5.6 Sol can beat Factorio on peaceful mode on Saturday October 31, 2026 @03:53PM (#50319482)
I don't think an LLM should ever be having a two-way conversation with the player. It would be more suited to 2 npcs having conversations amongst themselves. All dialogue delivered to the player should be human written.

At most it should be mildly tweaking existing dialogue, e.g updating a line to reflect game events. But as soon as you present a prompt window to the player the entire illusion that you are in a game world instantly dies.

Re:Malware uses LLMs to rank victims by how much they're worth on Saturday October 31, 2026 @12:46PM (#50317744)
If there is no way to disable auto-update the application goes in the bin.
Re:Building an AI-native engineering org on Saturday October 31, 2026 @11:35AM (#50317123)
The best human programmers were also trained on garbage. They got good anyway.
Using LLMs to write comments on this site is against the rules.

Re:Fair Use Benefits Everyone on Friday October 30, 2026 @08:30PM (#50311990)
Are they just trying to rage bait everyone?

They must understand that this can literally only make people hate them more.

Re:Building an AI-native engineering org on Friday October 30, 2026 @08:27PM (#50311966)
We didn't need LLMs to come up with the genius idea of making every desktop app a web browser.

Software quality was in terminal decline already, the only hope is that LLMs get good enough to dig outselves out of the several miles deep hole that has been dug.

The only people who think republicans and democrats are exactly the same have an IQ of 80.

The "both sides" meme was funny when jon stewart was doing it in 2008. It has run its course.
