I think that was humor, because there seem to be at least three GPU-accelerated terminal emulators written in Rust.

Just call it being harmonized. That's what the Chinese have been calling it for years. Twitter is part of the same kind of apparatus in the US.
Re:Ask HN: Why doesn't YouTube have a competitor? on Tuesday December 07, 2021 @11:06AM (#29474061)
All a competitor needs to do for me to prefer them is not be part of the Ministry of Truth, i.e., to not set itself up as the arbiter of whether information is correct. It should know its role: to store and play videos and such. Odysee, Rumble, Bitchute, Gab TV, NewTube, all of these fit the bill. All of these are very valuable in an era when censorship has been normalized.
The way Australia is going, it seems clear they just want to be able to stifle all dissent.
Do you suppose anyone ever committed suicide after wrongly being adjudged an abuser?
I've heard that around 130k people are delivered from poverty each day lately. That's due to markets and such, not the good intentions of people like Pol Pot.

There is some argument to be made along these lines, but it involves changing human beings themselves, e.g. through something like meditation. These kinds of articles never have and never will mention such things that might actually effect the changes they seem to want to make in the world but are unable or unwilling to make in themselves.

> Otherwise I don't think I have a very wasteful usage of electricity.

Well, of course you don't think it's wasteful. But that's irrelevant. We're talking about putting the power to decide what's "wasteful" in somebody else's hands, maybe some appointed judges somewhere in the government. It doesn't seem like you want to put that power in my hands, though. Still waiting for that list. I'm ready to dictate which of your activities are worthy of electricity.

Please furnish a comprehensive list of your uses of electricity. We'd like to go through it and see which of them are wasteful. We'll let you know which ones you won't be allowed to do anymore.

Pretty cool. If you like Ableton but would prefer to use a more obscure underdog for some reason, there's Bitwig.
Re:All Applications for Nuclear Energy at COP26 Rejected on Sunday October 31, 2021 @02:37AM (#29054936)
Easy to predict, once you get the notion that the real purpose of all this flailing is to disempower people, i.e., to change things so that ordinary people cannot buy and use as much electricity as they like, for that to be something for rich powerful people only.
Re:Ask HN: When were the next/prev/root buttons added? on Thursday October 28, 2021 @03:27AM (#29023383)
Hmm, I hadn't noticed that, but I noticed today that the "37 comments" links include too much stuff in the "a" tags now. Surely it's related.
Re:The Noam Chomsky of IT on Tuesday October 26, 2021 @01:37AM (#28996773)
Well, I don't know if they'd really fit the bill for you, but what comes to my mind is stuff by Jaron Lanier, and "When Google Met Wikileaks" by Julian Assange. Assange actually seems similar to Chomsky to me because of the depth and breadth of his knowledge.
Well, the point of all this is for Facebook to censor a lot more stuff than it does now. Seems plausible to me that Zuckerberg wants that too, but to retain the appearance of having his hands tied by regulation.
Hmm. I have a hard time believing that companies will ever not need to express some business-related desire and have it translated into software for them. That's my job -- to listen to what people need, and to make stuff that will do that for them. Have you considered starting a small software consultancy?
I think you already know it and mentioned it, but definitely try to get in somewhere via friends or acquaintances, if possible.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I think it's just a matter of finding some organization where you will be recognized and appreciated for having a lot of experience. Some places simply don't understand that, and will only be looking for whether you have the specific skills required. They may not understand that you've seen tech fads arise, become skilled in them, and then watched them become unfashionable.

Eh, here's some stuff he posted several hours ago: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1451714806721957891.html

Are you suggesting all these photos are forgeries or mistranslated?

There are perfectly valid concerns being raised by experts in the field.

If you don't have time to watch this, there are slides. https://rumble.com/vnbv86-winning-the-war-against-therapeuti...

I think the suggestion was that there's this crazy explosion of transitive dependencies because JS is not 'batteries included' with some standard library that covers quite a lot of what people want.

If there's no standard library, you have to include some libraries to do what you want. Those libraries had no standard library to depend on either, so they had to do the same thing you did. And so on.

4chan and the MSM are both despicable slime pits in their own ways, but 4chan is much more honest. If the corporate media decides some subject is taboo, or that some line of inquiry is banned in order to protect advertisers' profit, you'll still be able to find extremely strong signal about those topics on 4chan.

Good on them. They're absolutely right to refuse to be drafted into serving as medical police, conducting undignified checks of the medical papers of their customers. Good for them, and shame on anyone who's going along with it.
Re:Diversity, inclusion, and belonging at GitHub in 2021 on Wednesday October 20, 2021 @12:16PM (#28932512)
It's like evil cancer, this mentality that individual humans are just types of pokemon and that we need to try to have the "correct" number of each. No good will come of it.
Begging the question. It remains to be seen if the document I linked even is a piece of propaganda or disinformation. Being correct would be adequate defense against those accusations, wouldn't it?
My agenda is, I don't like it when healthy young people develop debilitating heart problems, and I hope to avoid that as much as possible. Were you hoping for something more than that?

And let's please stop with the account age shaming. There are reasons why people who want to keep posting to HN have to create new accounts sometimes, but it's against the rules to discuss it, so let's drop that and talk about the information in the document.

I linked to a PDF, not the whole site. Let's focus on the information in that document. Thanks.

Re: on Saturday October 16, 2021 @08:37AM (#28887418)
It's not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of definition. I know what basic words mean. People can only disagree with the statements I made by destroying the meanings of the words I used. It's no big surprise that they're trying to do that, considering the source of this stuff is postmodernism.
Re:Ask HN: Can I or should I be less aware of things? on Saturday October 16, 2021 @06:52AM (#28886969)
Do you have some kind of daily self-cultivation practice like meditation or prayer?
