The favoured platitude of people with giant wallets.

If true, Jackie Chan would still look 37yo.

What's the Pareto principle, but for cars? My cx90 battery range is just over 35km... so in US that's a round trip of 10mi, i.e. 70% of all US car trips[0].

It does the daily commute a few times over, or one day of errands. It does a full charge overnight anywhere with a standard plug; but I have enjoyed EV only parking and fast charge when I'm on the road. I've only used gas for intercity trips, and then it still gets better milage than my 6-speed mazda 3 sedan. And it tows! My partner and I got a short camper trailer and we've spent this last summer doing campouts we never would have bothered with a tent.

Very versatile vehicle, I'm super satisfied with mine.

My cx90 convinces me that neighbourhood range evs are to cars what the air fryer is to ovens. I would ditch the beater mazda3 for ev kei car if I could. The petrol and Detroit 3 lobby is holding back the future on this continent.

There are surely prize-worthy discoveries to be made about the long term behaviour of any system that can introspect previous discoveries and adjust it's behaviour.

I suspect that economics and psychology are both examples of these systems, and that, long term, these system will alter behaviour to thwart previous observations.

Economics requires observers to hoard discoveries and insights, so they can enrich themselves while the insights hold.

I recall shake/tilt was most useful in the sections of the field where rolling over a sensor would toggle a light, and lighting all three toggles yielded a prize. There is one cluster at the top centre, and another in the left purple platform. The ball is moving slowly enough here that a nudge can send to one toggle or the other.

I bought this knowledge with my uni gpa, NO RAGRETS.

This reminds me of a quote from Peter Schiff, circa 2008 housing crash. To paraphrase,

“too-big-to-fail eventually becomes too-big-to keep alive"

In practice, it opened the flood gates for corporations and oligarchs to pour money into the electoral system. [1] Do you like technocracy? Because this is how you get technocracy.

You better sit down before you look up “citizens united."

For single parents, this is the choice between working or not working.

I checked the source and confirmed no one in the car was seriously hurt.

So I will say it:

The way the tire shows up again after the mega damage: just slowly rolling up into the accident; was a pretty good comic beat.

I remembered the Satan-themed sneaks, and assumed that was what your link would be for 'wild shoes'. Nope. TIL they also made Strongbad cosplay boots.

Mschf and Improv Everywhere have done some endearing stunts over the years.

I'm glad early fb was a good experience for you, but studies have found that when fb was just opening to universities, lower grades and higher demand for mental health services would follow.

Lawrence Lessig attempted this, raising over $1M dollars with a kickstarter campaign. So successful that only polysci nerds remember.

Legally, this has been true in the USA for more than a century. (Which I take as evidence of bad law, not acceptable practice.)

Search for 'Brondell swash nonelectric', available at costco and jeffazon. I have this and the electric version, and I find the non-electric is good enough and a fraction of the price.
> The food is the problem

Quality of food is certainly declining, but we are also seeing weight increases in lab rats with extremely controlled diets, so food probably isn't the entire story. There's no accepted explanation for this, but good candidates that might apply to humans are: subtle toxicity by microplastics, and changes in gut microbiomes.

Are you the original author?

This is a really fun exploration of an old premise, thanks! Great little easter eggs with color zone and the wedding.

(But I'm completely stuck in the hard rain, after 'Emergency - connect to snake', sometimes i survive the stream, sometimes i can't, i haven't figured out the state that makes the stream traversable.)

Re:The factory that only builds white Toyota Land Cruisers on Monday November 28, 2022 @12:10PM (#33776223)
That doesn't sound conspiratorial at all. All sorts of features drift from being 'luxury items' to 'no one will buy a car without it.' In my life time time this has happened with air conditioning, power windows, heated seats. To say nothing of mandated safety features.

I think the way auto makers have 'trained' their customers is by removing the granularity of customization. Back in the day, every possible option could be tweaked when you ordered a new car. I knew a family that ordered their van with (standard) upholstery seats in the front, but cheaper vinyl seats in the back (because small kids with drinks).

You can't cherry pick features now, you just get 3 or 4 trim packages: base / standard / luxury / luxury + sport. And base is so punishingly sparse it only exists to lower the 'starting at' price in ads.

And that level of indoctrination is nothing compared to the 60 years long campaign to keep most urban development zoned as car-centric sprawl.

Re:RISC-V: The Last ISA? on Wednesday November 16, 2022 @03:28PM (#33630046)
I watched Goddard's lectures a few years ago, and he talked about different price points for the mill--'tiers' of processors that differed mainly, (iirc,) by the size of the belt. He made some claims about porting binaries from one tier to another without compilation from source, and it struck me as a very optimistic claim, for the reasons you hinted at.

My bread and butter work isn't very close to the metal, but you sound more experienced with this sort of thing. Are you familiar with the mill? Do you think they have a chance of avoiding the weeds that Transmeta got stuck in?

Re:RISC-V: The Last ISA? on Wednesday November 16, 2022 @01:15PM (#33627824)
It's a shame they haven't got anything to market. It's such a clever re-think of how instructions operate. If anything, they are probably too far ahead of their time.

Reminds me a bit of Transmeta. "Code morphing" sounds very much like the instruction reordering that's standard now.
