Re:Derrida vs. the rationalists on Thursday February 09, 2017 @02:39PM (#13610140)
The early internet was a Derridian playground.

There was, literally, nothing beyond the text at 9600 baud. Identity and purpose and intention of content generators were permanently undecipherable in those days. You could only take things as they were presented to maintain sanity and causality.

Ask HN: Security clearance for startup CEOs?

Does anyone have experience with being a CEO of a startup and acquiring security clearance with the United States government? How the process worked, what the benefits were, what the costs were in terms of overseas opportunities? Thanks.

Trump is now at 43 mentions.

Obama is at 8.

Re:Secret docs reveal: an FBI with vast hidden powers on Tuesday January 31, 2017 @07:50PM (#13537060)
At the time of this comment: (6 hours after OP)

14 mentions of Trump. 8 mentions of Bush. 2 mentions of Reagan.

vs.

10 wistful mentions of Hillary Clinton being the better choice. 4 mentions of Obama. 1 mention of Bill Clinton expanding ECHELON.

Obama had 8 years building and using it this entire apparatus, after 8 years of Bush putting it into place after 9/11. Trump had been taking it for a test drive over the past 2 weeks.

Can we please rename HN to "Silicon Valley and Democrats Only" so lurkers know what they are getting into?

You and germinalphrase should check your emails. I've given detailed answers on how to do all of this and addressed your points.
Re:The deep roots of modern resentment on Tuesday January 31, 2017 @01:06PM (#13533336)
> You are conflating economic neoliberalism with social liberalism.

I agree it appears I'm making this conflation. But

> nobody is pretending that they are:

Is not an honest statement. Any attempt to make cheap brown labor more expensive through legislation (See the Trump protests) or even by IMPROVING their quality of life (See gentrification) is instantly fought off as racist. The powers that be have deeply merged international currency flow with Western liberal morality after the 1940s and use their sacred cows as hostages to stifle any threats to their power.

Re:The deep roots of modern resentment on Tuesday January 31, 2017 @12:54PM (#13533184)
> That isn't a proposal to replace capitalism

Put down the Marxism for 5 seconds and follow my original premise all the way to it's logical end.

- Make the slaves as expensive as the natives.

- Why would you need slaves in this scenario?

- You wouldn't.

- If slaves and natives are equal cost, then machines are given incentives to outperform both.

- Western liberalism is completely flipped on its head in a world where humans can never compete against machine labor.

There is your solution. Close the slave/native arbitrage, let machines compete. This is where you opine about protecting your sacred cows.

Re:The deep roots of modern resentment on Tuesday January 31, 2017 @12:49PM (#13533118)
Every single thing you touched (And every single thing connected to what you touched) to type that statement was made overseas.

Welcome to the international system of currency and labor arbitrage, a core prerequisite for any democratic experiment. Democracy has ALWAYS and WILL always require slaves.

Re:The deep roots of modern resentment on Tuesday January 31, 2017 @12:38PM (#13532968)
Yes we do.

It's just those who have benefited from this arrangement the most happen to also control the relationships that power mass media, which is then used to undermine alternative solutions as "racist", "sexist" and "evil" with no evidence whatsoever and immediately engage in mob swarming and plebeian intimidation.

For example: Western Liberalism absolutely requires cheap brown people. (And that deep reliance ABSOLUTELY makes supporters of Western liberalism completely racist) If you make cheap brown people as expensive as Western natives, why do you need cheap brown people? And if you have "good-enough" AI, why do you need either?

As always, the risk is simple: deny the expression of human nature at your own peril.

Those who hunt monsters are apt to become one.

If people feel they have no future, and the present has nothing for them, only one time domain remains to provide shelter.
Both sides have their strategies to maximize fertility. This is the female strategy, which enhances the male strategy of sexual aggression.
This is being done to create unified narratives across spaces for future political goals as a way to nullify the narratives of those who rely on personalized ads.

Bet you dollars to donuts those regions will look eerily similar to known voting districts.

It's a mating strategy. If a girl has acquired a capable mate, then the other females only stand to benefit by successfully undermining that relationship. Upon doing so, the capable mate chances to be distributed across the girl's social network are significantly increased, thus, increasing collective survival.

Re:The spreading of misinformation online (2015) on Monday January 23, 2017 @01:15PM (#13464371)
The early internet couldn't verify identity.

Thus, if someone said they were "18/f" we assumed they were 44/m. If they said anything younger than that, we assumed FBI. Everyone was bullshitting everyone because identity could not be proven. 56.6kb wasn't enough for rich media lifestreaming culture. It was only text and the occasional person who owned a scanner. You could call this version of the internet a Derrida paradise.

As internet speeds became better, identity still couldn't be proven, but it could take on characteristics that were more natural for our senses: faces, motions, and sound. Compared to pure text identification, this development is quite the relief for minds used to living in such identity paranoia.

Social media companies piggybacked off of this relief and built entire networks which incentivized positive identification, which was the core for the ad tech revolution. But, the problem with positive identity is that you will attract the very old, very battle-tested, and very entrenched wolves who know how to hack identity: the politicians, the social sciences, the charlatans, the trolls, mass media agents, the psyop engineers, the alphabets, and the rest of the industries who profit from poisoning the well of identity.

And now, here we are, accusing each other of engaging in genocidal racism because we've turned pixels into the inputs of a Skinner box of ideological signaling.

Fake it 'til you make it!

The problem becomes more pronounced the further we abstract away from Assembly and memory management.

Re:Using Lua coroutines to create an RPG dialogue system on Tuesday January 10, 2017 @04:23PM (#13369146)
Robust RPG dialogue and trigger system for JavaScript: https://github.com/codeotter/thusspokenpc
Step 1.) Raise an IndieGoGo campaign to invent some impossible thing that makes Silicon Valley middle class super excited to throw money at, offer a return. (Some fundivist nonsense)

Step 2.) Raise another IndieGoGo campaign that just promises a lesser return.

Step 3.) Raise one more IndieGoGo campaign that just promises an ever lesser returns than that.

Step 4.) Make perks payout schedules and trickle enough money out to the original raise to the few top perks of the other raises.

Now have now hypothecated a $10,000 raise to a $10,000,000 position. Wrap up the entire position in a derivate. Wrap that up in another derivative. Wrap that in a derivative. Then allocate the rest of your raise to meta counter positions that arise from those positions.

Slowly release cheap updates for the original raise and slowly lose community confidence. Trigger the derivative condition cascade. Make stupid money.

You're welcome.

Pick up any reading material.. a magazine, newspaper, anything.. and just read it in a different voice. Create a character in your mind with an accent and just read it as that person. Then start having conversations with other people you don't know, introducing yourself as that character. You'll have to invent life details on the fly, but that's fine as long as its consistent. Do this for about a year.

It's really the acting part that matters in the end. :D

Quit voice acting, became a developer. Your voice is good for commercial and promos and that's where all the well paying work is, so good move on your part!

Voice acting is one of the super rare meritocracies left. You can't sleep your way to the top or bullshit your way to the objective. Networking really helps (especially at the upper echelon of agent representation) but on your way there, you can either do it or you can't.

Re:Richard Feynman Put Himself on the FBI’s Do Not Call List on Wednesday January 04, 2017 @06:59PM (#13323362)
I find that nostalgic personalities such as Feynman imply that the authorities of the past were not only evil, but conquered, and therefore, sublimated into the dominant mythos of progress.

In the post-9/11 world, this mythos is central to the authority of authority: "See? We no longer run overt, clumsy, and brutal humint! We learned our lesson, thanks hippies!"

Everyone nods in agreement and dismisses the people saying, "Covert sigint just got cheaper, that's all."

Re:The Real Name Fallacy on Wednesday January 04, 2017 @03:54PM (#13321938)
An almost acceptable pivot, if it wasn't for the sealioning accusation in the parent.

Sometimes, I can't tell if the newer generation understands that Photoshop is a thing or not.

Also, I'm pretty sure they have no idea that when you create a massive repository of identities to try and protect the childrens, you're just painting a huge bullseye on the back of it's database.

It's like people believe Russians hacked the election, but no one could EVER hack a central repository of identities! Why, it's protected by good intentions and saving the childrens! Oh hey, another 1 billion Yahoo! identities got leaked...

Re:The Real Name Fallacy on Wednesday January 04, 2017 @02:54PM (#13321482)
If you don't submit and lay prostrate before the initial claim, you are guilty. Asking questions is forbidden. Clarification is forbidden. Always pretend to understand instead of engaging in analysis.

Welcome to the mindset of the people who want to control the Internet.

Re:The Real Name Fallacy on Wednesday January 04, 2017 @02:27PM (#13321265)
Step -1.) Demand real name's to protect the childrens.

Step 0.) We did it! Everyone has to use real names now! Equality unlocked!

Step 1.) Put in someone else's real name instead of your own.

Step 2.) Troll as that person or use that real name to infiltrate that person's social network

Step lulz.) Doxx brigade/morality police now target the wrong person.

Step 3.) Congratulations, not only did you not solve the problem you were trying to solve, now your rules are a robust breeding ground to cause actual social and economic damage to people YOU ALREADY AGREE WITH because "pixels are feelings, too".

Step 4.) Hang your head in shame for such short-term thinking.

Step 5.) Downvote me because of tone.

Thought experiment from 2,000 years ago.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_of_Gyges

Until the Internet can guarantee that I will not be targeted by petulant ideological zealots obsessed with doxxing people to win online arguments, Goons who infiltrate the State Department to steer it's considerable resources against it's political enemies, social justice warriors who try to get people fired because someone doesn't agree with Rachel Maddow, or state agencies who scour my tax records to Al Capone me, I'll keep whatever anonymity I can preserve, thank you very much.

EDIT: I'll happily deal with an endless torrent of honest deplorables who occasionally troll every so often over politically-motivated psychopaths any day of the week.
