That's a good start.

Re:Ask HN: Why is Apple still releasing 16 GB phones? on Monday September 14, 2015 @05:26PM (#10217571)
It may exist only to push the consumer to a higher price. 16GB is a low-friction pain point that pushes many people into to an option with more profitable margins for Apple.

This is a shadow, a hint of what AI and machine learning will bring us.
Re:Show HN: Gamamia: Find, share, and discuss indie games on Thursday February 19, 2015 @01:05PM (#9075661)
This is a great idea. Discovery is becoming a much needed tool with the explosion of indie gaming.
Affordable Care Act
It's a great way that learning to code can produce a ton of content and experimental innovation. Code Academy (and others) listen up: What if everyone produced content while learning to code?
It's such a simple concept though: remove the user's ability to determine how long they have file access for. You could apply that frame to any media; in this case the hot topic is photo sharing. I'm sure tons of people are already trying to make a 'Snapchat with video'.

You could do it with audio too. You could do it with GPS coords. You could do it with any data feed. Photo sharing is just huge right now.

I'm sorry this happened to you, but I don't think the power of crowd sourcing should destroy a small start-up based on what still may be a misunderstanding.

Hell, perhaps this will gain them some needed attention.

Re:Startup ideas that I’m sick of hearing about on Wednesday February 01, 2012 @06:00AM (#3537463)
I agree. I'm a co-founder with a start-up that just joined a prominent accelerator, and we do two of the five things listed: book-swapping and daily deals. While my opinion may be slightly biased about book-swapping because of that, I have done a ton of research into the market and there is definitely a market-pull for something that allows simple, intuitive book-swaps. Obviously, it has to be safer and simpler (or at a decent fiscal advantage) compared to craigslist, ebay, amazon etc, but I think that it is do-able with the right business model, team, swapping algorithms...

You often hear about this idea (and maybe the other 4 as well, but I can't say from personal expertise) because there IS a need for a service like this and entrepreneurs know that. But I see two main problems that keep these book-swap start-ups from succeeding, and keep these ideas from going away.

First, there's a TON of variation in the way you can setup this business model. There are dozens of different ways to make your money, a handful of drastically different customers you can try and target, and endless ways to setup/code the swapping process. Not every solution will be successful; most will be unsuccessful.

Second, I don't think this idea works as a stand-alone product for a start-up because of a handful of factors. One such example: book swapping "season" (start & end of semesters) only occurs a few times a year. For a start-up with cash flow like that (or none), each "book season" is going to be swinging for the fences, after months of work, and hoping you can grab the attention of the market during the only few weeks they might care about your product.

Sorry if I was vague at times, I didn't wanna get into details.

I would enjoy being able to sort by color (availability etc) so I can quickly see a grouping of which ones are taken.
Short and simple; two-fold.

1. Read the advice on this page so that you've allowed yourself to see all possible angles. 2. Call the police and take it one step at a time with them.

What sort of positions are you look to add to the team? Anything that makes it's case?
Re:Ask HN: Okay okay, I'll learn to program...now what? on Tuesday August 17, 2010 @03:55AM (#1610542)
Thanks for so many replies! I'm going to spend the next few hours dissecting all of this information and then dive into research.

The take away message I got from seemingly everyone was to first decide WHAT I want to build, then find the best language. Teach myself using fun, interesting examples, and keep plugging away no matter the difficulty. Also, I should take full advantage of the wealth of information that can be found online. Lastly, since I'm already in the web-design field (for the one person that asked I own my own small web/graphic design firm), I might wanna stick with PHP or Java (or Python / Ruby).

Again, thank you.

Ask HN: Okay okay, I'll learn to program...now what?

Nearly a year of daily hn visits (spent reading the stories I understood) I've come to a realization: Knowing a programming language seriously reduces the barriers to entry for a tech startup. So the big Q: Where do I start? Do you have any resources to break down my options (Languages for Dummies?) and help me decide what, and how, I'll go about this. Background info: I've programmed in C, C++,...

Thanks to everyone who helped break it down. I had no idea my comment would actually get this level of a response.

It was my comment that inspired this; and I wasn't trolling anyone.
Re:The Top Idea in Your Mind on Wednesday July 21, 2010 @06:00PM (#1536688)
I would say yes. But not in the sort of way most people would hope to. Meaning, you can't just pick any new ground state and change to it very easily. Instead, you must educate yourself in new areas and you'll find yourself being driven to new ground states that were impossible options before your new education. Now you are 'falling' back into something that is, more or less, the same concept... but far more powerful now that you've given yourself more tools.

For example, my ground state used to be browsing the web and aimlessly brainstorming business ideas when I was in high school. Seven years later I've thoroughly taught myself how to build concrete business models and virtually test/evaluate them with thought experiments and many other similar concepts. Now my ground state falls to that: effectively the same sort of ground state but amplified with skills and knowledge.

Re:Love in the Age of the Pickup Artist on Wednesday July 14, 2010 @03:24AM (#1513927)
I almost feel like a good amount of the discussion being had missed the point, or perhaps most of the commenters stopped reading when the conversation shifted from the PUA community to the life and works of Stendhal.

To me, the articles clearly had three acts. First, was the explanation of the PUA method and the argument for it. This has accounted for nearly all the discussions I've read thus far. Second, was the case of passionate love as made through the works of Stendhal and his characters. In the third "act" is where the true point of the article comes to life. The author tries his best to merry the practices of seduction with natural love as played out through the characters he has introduced. Ultimately this leads to a discussion of which way is the best way to acquire the lover you seek.

This is the conversation I sought when I clicked the comments button; so I suppose I'll just ask the question outright: Which of the scenarios do you prefer, or do you believe is best?

Letting love naturally occur, all the while you are yourself and your beloved sees you for that?

Seduction through the art of 'the game' to acquire the target of your love in spite of the reality that you must "not love her for her to love you"?

Or perhaps you prefer the authors idea of balance through the withholding of the expressions of love, both verbally and through eroticism until the timing is proper?

Hell, maybe you've even got your own idea of middle ground? Let's hear it.

Ask HN: Would Video Games Requiring Real-World Education Work?

I'm brainstorming an idea where someone has created an RPG. The only way to succeed in this RPG is to master real-world knowledge. For example, Medicine or Healing may be an aspect of the game. For someone to achieve expert level in the game, they would have needed to prove to the game (through some mechanism) they have doctor-level knowledge.Often we hear about applying game-tactics like...

Re:Why the XBox 360 Kinect needs a Marketplace for Apps on Saturday July 03, 2010 @04:14PM (#1484354)
Note: XNA for creating games exists, but this isn't the powerful app-store / developer API functionality that it would need (http://creators.xna.com/en-US/)

Why the XBox 360 Kinect needs a Marketplace for Apps

I think the true potential of Kinect and it's 3D realtime tracking ability will lie in marketplace apps. Thousands of new applications with minority-report-style UIs can be built to do everything from internet browsing to trying on clothes at your favorite stores to video editting. The possibilities are endless. What app would you design?I would create a dressing room application filled with the...

Re:Where does a tree get its mass? on Thursday July 01, 2010 @05:36PM (#1479347)
I agree with the ultimate point in this article, but the way he got there seemed to be rather jumpy. I also had a hard time following his train of thought. I will say that the way the article ended was excellent.
Re:Ask HN: A List of HN-esque TV Programs on Thursday July 01, 2010 @03:48PM (#1479040)
The complete lack of response I got from fellow hackers today was surprising, if not disheartening. Does timing play a much larger role on HN than I realized?
