Nope. I got him setup with premium about 8 months ago.

This sounds like my 81 year old father in law. He's in a AI loop with what YouTube recommends him. It mostly AI slop channels that are less than a few months old. Lots of slop WW2 videos. I've tried to show him how to spot them. I go through and block this garbage, but somehow it still gets fed to him.

Finally! Someone using AI for something useful. This is really neat! Take note Google.
I got had a similar thing happen. My buddy inherited a lake house from him father. The dock needed repair. We talked about it one evening and that same night, I got a dock supply house ad. We never once looked it up online since we are both general contractors and already know how to fix it.

Dock repair is too random of a subject to be a coincidence.

FINALLY! When I was in 3rd grade (1977), I checked out a book at the school library about the year 2000 and what the world would be like.

I vividly remember reading we were all supposed to have flying cars by the year 2000. I was so excited and looked forward to the future. As the early 90's approached, it was obvious, NOBODY would have flying cars. Better late than never...

Fort Davis Texas at the McDonald Observatory is one of my favorites! The link below gives you a pretty good idea on how bad or good your night sky is.

https://lightpollutionmap.app/

I'm fortunate to now live under Bortle 3 skies. I got a telescope when I was a kid and stayed hooked on amateur astronomy for most of my life. But back then I lived in the city with Bortle 8 or 9 night skies...I kinda lost interest in the hobby.

In 2011 I left the Dallas Fort Worth area and headed west, met a nice girl that lives on a 180 acre family farm and the night skies are amazing! You can see the dark voids (dense dust) snaking through the Milky Way. Now, I'm saving money to build a small observatory out front, new telescope and a permanent pier to set it all on.

For you guys that watch YouTube. The channel is Mass Spec Everything. Here are a couple of interesting videos he did on various honey brands and regions. Pretty interesting stuff.

I went to my local grocery store (small West Texas town)last week and bought the last 6 remaining cans. I've never once seen the sardine shelf empty until last week.
I've been eating sardines for years. My grandfather used to eat them and I somehow acquired a taste for them. Instead of looking for sardines with sauces, just buy them in water and put your own sauce on them.

A good brown mustard or just plain ol Tabasco are great on them. I even use quality olive oil sometimes. They actually taste way better doing it this way.

In Texas, you have to go outside of the city limits. South Carolina you can get them year round. There are other states that are legal year round, but I don't remember them off the top of my head.
There are some states where you can still buy them year round. Holiday or not. South Carolina comes to mind because I was there a few months ago. They have giant stores all over the state.
Back around 1982, fireworks were a big no in my neighborhood. My friend across the street had some bottle rockets and he decided to shoot one off in the middle of the street. We didn't have a bottle to put it in to light it, so we wedged it between two bricks. He lit it and a split second before it went off, it tilted to point directly down the street. It fired off blazing down the middle of the road. At the same time a cop car just happened to turn the corner and that damn thing popped on the hood of the cop car. We scattered like ants. My friend that lit it ran inside, I hid in his garage under his moms car and the other two hauled ass home.

Well the cop parked out front and knocked on his door. His dad answered and they spent which felt like an hour (probably 10-15 minutes) talking about what happened. He got in big trouble and grounded. I stayed in the garage until the smoke cleared, then ran home. I didn't see him for at least a week.

Your post reminded me about that incident. They were regulated in Fort Worth Texas 44 years ago. I haven't thought about that day in years! LOL! Thanks for the fun memory.

Right? The installers conveniently made them within baseball bat range. Luckily, we don't have them where I live (small West Texas town).
It is kind of weird seeing inside someone house. I only went a few pages in, but what the hell is this?

Temperature Humidity Index. Or as they now call it for normies, "feels like temperature"
It's just a heat transfer. Refrigerant inside the evaporator picks up heat and transfers it to the condensing unit outside.

They don't create heat. It was there in the first place, just a different location.

Sony still uses them. Their security updates were sub par the last time I checked.

Thanks for the information!

Ask HN: Route Optimization Software

I'm trying to find a good paid software solution to optimize routes for about 25 people. I've found several online, but I was hoping to find someone with first hand experience using one before I commit. I couldn't think of a better online community than HN to ask my question.Ideally, it would be helpful if we could copy blocks of addresses from Excel, paste the addresses into the software,...

I rooted my old S3 probably around 2016 I had laying around. There was an exploit called "let it rain" and that got me root access. Then on XDA Developers I found several custom ROM'S. Someone even created a Nougat ROM for that thing later on. That was the last version I was able to load on it. I sure did learn a lot back then.
Re:Mobile carriers can get your GPS location on Saturday January 31, 2026 @02:36PM (#46839975)
I've thought that too... especially Bluetooth. I know it's possible with Wi-Fi signal strength.

Is it a coincidence most smartphone manufacturers were suddenly all on board with removing the 3.5mm jack and forced Bluetooth? A mesh network of sorts like Amazon is doing with Ring. I even sometimes forget to save my battery and turn Bluetooth off when I'm not using my earbuds. It's probably a false sense of security having it disabled because I'm sure it's doing something in the background anyways. I can't say for sure though. Kind of like years ago with Google getting caught with the whole location data thing. I'm sure the average Joe doesn't care if Bluetooth is enabled 24/7.

I try and not be on the tin foil bandwagon, but every once and a while I come across things that make you go hmmm...

TRT has literally changed my life. I've been on it for about 3 years now. My lethargy went away first. My energy levels increased next. Then I noticed increased stamina when doing physical activities. This was a tremendous help at shedding 60 lbs. The last thing I noticed six months in was libido. My girlfriend doesn't complain. ;) At 54, TRT has been life changing. I physically feel 30 again.
Re:The 600-year-old origins of the word 'hello' on Saturday January 17, 2026 @10:44AM (#46658926)
Back in the 80's, I'd call my best friend and when his Dad would answer, he would say, "yello". Is this a North Eastern thing? His family was from Pennsylvania.

The Wraith have arrived!

Anyone that watched Stargate Atlantis gets it.

Definitely. I never knew about it. Now it's bookmarked.
Jerry Berg is the person you're probably thinking of. His YouTube channel is Barnacules Nerdgasm.

He's a super smart programmer, but seems to be suffering from depression since Microsoft laid him off. He often talks about his issues when he livestreams Tech Talk on Saturdays.

I hope this doesn't become a trend across the NWS. In Texas. When major weather events are developing, I regularly check forecast discussions as they are updated.

It's far more valuable than looking at the plain Jane forecast with pretty pictures. In the discussions, they'll break down my region from north to south or east to west which is valuable. The west Texas dry line plays a huge roll in our west Texas severe weather and they discuss which area of is more likely to be impacted. It's not just a broad forecast.
