You're too optimistic. I work as consultant in industrial controls. I often get called for:

- "machine doesn't work!" It was set in the wrong mode. Who did it? No answer

- "machine doesn't work!" The HMI shows a huge message with "CHECK SENSOR AA-123" or "VALVE BB-321 CLOSED" and they are puzzled when you point it to them

See also the "PLC program changed itself!" in-joke in industrial automation circles.

The reality is that what you envisage "does not scale", to borrow from software engineering.

Oh, one of my pet peeves: "if it ain't broken don't fix it"? Then you're going to fix it when it's broken, everyone is screaming at you, there's little time, and cannot reason clearly ... what a stupid saying.

...welcome to industrial sales :-(

There actually is the BatchML stardardized recipe format, even if it's a different kind of recipes I'm talking about. ISA-88 recipes for describing pharma/chemical batch production processes.

If your work is adjacent to industrial automation, check this community out.

Albeit admittedly slowly, something new is cooking in that field.

Part 2 article goes into a bit more of detail, but the funniest thing is that they requested access to the SNMP MIBs of the controller and never got them

> I requested MIBs from Q-Free but didn’t receive any follow-up after the request and I never received access to the MIBS, so it was back to square one.

Then you go look at https://www.freethemibs.org/advocates and... there they are, "advocates" for free MIB access. What clowns.
