The exhaust tastes funny on those models.
Technical solutions to people problems are rarely effective.
Only for the occasional personal project (employer supplies MBP), but I am entirely in agreement - aside from the external monitor restriction, my base model $799 M1 Macbook Air is more than enough for my work.
Re:Salary Transparency on Monday October 24, 2022 @08:50PM (#33324752)
To answer your question as posed: to fix the power/information imbalance that is used to pay people less than they are worth.

To answer your question the way I wish to: thanks to Equifax's TWN, candidate resumes, reference checks, background checks etc - the candidate is already showing all their cards.

Re:Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro/Air users, how is it going? on Tuesday August 30, 2022 @05:04PM (#32655050)
To add to this: I run a 32' 4k screen as my sole, external monitor. My M1 air runs it like a champ. I dislike the limit of 1 external monitor, but it does perform well regardless.
Re:Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro/Air users, how is it going? on Tuesday August 30, 2022 @05:00PM (#32654985)
I daily a base M1 Air, the $899 one.

1 - How is the performance? Does it get noisy/hot like my work machine (2019 i9 16" Pro) ?

  > I have never wanted for more, it's almost always idling. I can spin up a local kube cluster and run a few things if needs be, still no performance issues.
2 - How is the development experience? Are you missing some critical tools on this platform that you need on a day-to-day basis?

  > I only use VSCode with python, golang, docker, some random extensions etc. I've never noticed anything missing.
3 - How is Docker performance/compatibility? I work a lot with Docker for backends/servers and Docker for Mac has always been pretty bad, but wanted to see if it improves with M1!

  > It's been flawless for me, with admittedly fairly limited use.
4 - How much RAM is good for heavy development work? I use Adobe Creative Cloud a lot, do video editing here and there, and also a lot of Mobile development (React Native). Would 16GB be okay, or do I need more? (Would like to future-proof for the next 4-5 years). My work Mac with i7 32GB always gets insanely hot and noisy with most basic loads.

  > I cannot at all attest to this, as I don't do anything like video work, which is far more intensive than the light development I do. I'd probably suggest 16gb+ of ram though, as I am under the impression that the M chip laptops rely on using the swapfile a lot.

This is true only if you place zero value on "having a roof over my head".
Re:Ask HN: Amazon lying about shipping dates? on Wednesday August 10, 2022 @05:21PM (#32418627)
I routinely see the "Buy within x hours for delivery tomorrow!" and after I do so, I get a confirmation email saying it'll be delivered 2 days from now.
I do not think the European perception of the UK could accurately be described as "inspirational" at the moment.
Yes, absolutely. Lots of tech jobs (maybe the majority?) are not involved with national security.
Re:Texas police want uvalde bodycam footage suppressed on Monday June 13, 2022 @03:21PM (#31730370)
It's almost as if civilians (read: police) and soldiers are trained, equipped, and deployed to different environments, with different rules.
I also would vote for FreeTaxUSA, they have served me well. I do however note the irony of them being named FreeTaxUSA and in the same breath, mentioning that it costs to file. Especially given the context of the thread in general.
Re:California Considers Doubling Its Taxes on Friday January 07, 2022 @05:03PM (#29845450)
I certainly couldn't ever seriously consider early stage startups, as my spouse is unfortunately heavily dependent on my healthcare. It'd be cool if that was no longer a blocker.
Re:Ask HN: Strategies to land fully remote $250k+ job on Sunday December 19, 2021 @05:24PM (#29619081)
> It can be tracked during your background check (using SSN). They will make you sign a form that you authorize them to perform such a check.

Can you show me a background check service that offers a list of previous employers found by SSN? I did not know that exists. Unless they're consulting the IRS, I don't know how it could exist.

Background checks as I understand them, tend to check things like: credit score, contacting references (that you provide), criminal records etc. Primarily publicly available information.

> I also often don't understand the technical details other developers discuss in meetings.

I often worry about this, but unless you're at the Staff+ level, I think the chances of you knowing the intricate details of ~other~ peoples' work is low. And that's probably not a problem.

> makes me wish I'd tried a bit harder at bullshitting.

Honestly, I'd highly encourage it (a little). Being able to market yourself and your skills is very valuable.

Somewhat amusing that he has a new dev job since the incident.
It has been worth it for me. My quality of life here is far higher than back home in the UK, I've found a city and state that I enjoy living in - 300 something days of sunshine a year vs grey skies in the UK - and the salary delta is outrageous.

Although, I didn't move strictly for work - I intended to build a life here, and my initial visa was dual intent for that reason.

My company offered an (off-cycle) 5% raise in July. In August I signed an offer for a ~30% jump. Not FAANG, also not some thought-leading 10x engineer. If your company isn't offering you a 20-30% raise, someone else probably will.

Apple, mentioning Vagrant: https://jobs.apple.com/en-us/details/200251910/site-reliabil...

I could probably find more, but many (most?) large tech companies use one or more of the Hashicorp suite. I don't think it's unfair to say that they are the standard toolset for certain roles.

Re:Ask HN: Best Keyboard for Programming in 2021? on Thursday November 04, 2021 @01:16PM (#29109893)
A lot of my tech friends (as well as myself) are fans of the HHKB. Very compact design, it takes a little getting used to. It is not new, however.
Re:Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro or Lenovo X1 Carbon with Ubuntu on Saturday October 23, 2021 @12:39PM (#28970059)
I also picked up the cheapest spec M1 Air for my personal machine, with a view to upgrading when the new Pro's came out. I absolutely have no need to upgrade, I have never even got it to run remotely sluggish. Very impressive for $999.
Not everyone is blessed with a loving and supportive family, unfortunately. Surely you know this?
Mine has not. But from people I know who's CEOs have, basically a return on investment in office space is the only reason that can be articulated.
Current employer just gave me 5%. I'm interviewing for ~30%. /shrug
Re:“Great resignation” wave coming for companies on Monday June 14, 2021 @11:05PM (#27510832)
It is not - you get access to healthcare at all times (employed or otherwise, young or old) and simply pay a slightly higher tax rate when you are working to pay for it.

Ask HN: Common tech career moves?

What are some common career moves for tech workers? As in, a jump from Operations Engineer > Devops Engineer is a fairly common move as far as I can tell, and often Developers can end up in Project Management. Background: As a devops engineer who hates being on call, I'm looking at related fields and wondering the kinds of role transitions that people have seen happen (or made happen...
