Right. So it's reinventing the thing that came before it.

I suppose it has been awhile since LightScribe was a thing. People forget and reinvent so much these days it's funny.
Re:WTF Ubuntu? on Monday November 02, 2026 @11:12AM (#50338946)
Contrast this with: "The Gift of It's Your Problem Now"

We keep doing this to ourselves. Heads should roll at Ubuntu. Start that process right now? You can't. You see, nobody is directly available to sue. It does seem that nobody ever truly cared about that. The insecure codebase and tech debt shall continue to grow because that is the gift.

https://apenwarr.ca/log/20211229-the-gift-of-its-your-proble...

This is actually good news. Accountability is everything when it comes to food supply. Forcing people to witness spoiled food is the slap people need to feel else they will never take action. The prolific insecure code that is keeping you from eating today will always be fixed.
Re:Bidirectional Charging During Grid Outages on Sunday November 01, 2026 @01:01PM (#50327970)
One of the biggest misses in NACS (J3400) is bi-directional power in the spec. SAE J3400/2 will fix it.
It is just that simple folks. Unplug it.
Re:A tiny Pacific country rolls out universal basic income on Sunday November 01, 2026 @10:29AM (#50326574)
Yes, this. Why retire in FL when you can retire with UBI? Permanent tourists will overwhelm the country.
Re:A tiny Pacific country rolls out universal basic income on Sunday November 01, 2026 @08:49AM (#50325678)
One caveat I don't think they understand, especially within a tropical environment, is retirees. Anywhere resembling FL and handing UBI out will slowly become flooded with old couples and retirees. Florida 2.0 if you will.
Cisco that powers more than half of the backbone of all things online? Are we trying to lose control of AGI as soon as it emerges??
Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Friday October 30, 2026 @11:31AM (#50305350)
There needs to be a softer rule for HN black bar. If Sir Patrick doesn't deserve a HN black bar, then no man does. R.I.P.

I bet Shatner, somehow, will get it.

Re:The $6.3B Binance Hack Was Pulled Off in Just 20 Minutes on Friday October 30, 2026 @09:55AM (#50303949)
Excellent, now make sure all of it gets into the 90 minute movie.
Re:Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:57PM (#50293242)
A few days ago a Google found me something I was searching for, but via ads and not search. In the middle of searching raw part numbers, the ad became 100% relevant. It was a weird experience clicking on the ad; something I never ever do. So maybe this is a bit of good news? Yardinflatables.com if you're curious.
Re:OpenAI's agents talked to each other through the CPU Cache on Thursday October 29, 2026 @08:59AM (#50288245)
Bad headline. Their entire goal was to find a hardware channel:

"In one test, agents placed in separate, isolated environments on shared hardware were told to exchange secrets with no network connection and no shared files."

Politically force datacenters to consume only solar and battery. Instead of total collapse, we now have tremendous amounts of cheap energy when the bubble implodes. That seems like the only way to hedge the bet on AI.
This is certainly one take. Urgent != important, however. You can call it however you want but I'm not going to stop using AI today or tomorrow after having skimmed this urgent message. Their open questions have wisdom.
Costs come down at scale. Vote with your wallet, tell your friends, and we just might have our faster+better+cheaper problem solved.
Re:About the compromised eMudhra intermediate CAs on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @09:06AM (#50272944)
In the same degree as involuntary manslaughter is not intentional murder. Sure they made a mistake. Fairness has limits when you're doing it wrong and know better.
Let's pretend there's a night and day difference between pushing some MP3 onto all iPhones and distrusting a chain of certs that hold the value of '4'. At minimum Apple need to revoke everywhere these joke-level certs live and as fast as possible, and on all devices which also means out of support. Breaking is acceptable here as CA trust is fully compromised.
Re:About the compromised eMudhra intermediate CAs on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @08:48AM (#50272732)
It's on the front page right now. Their dev tools are a complete mess when it comes to actually using the trust store as designed. Why would you dismiss this outright?

Re:About the compromised eMudhra intermediate CAs on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @08:36AM (#50272601)
They're doing badly because they have a market cap at 5 trillion USD ($5,070,000,000,000 to $5,110,000,000,000) and chose to ditch the first principals of a CA store. Doing impressive backflips to compensate for lack of understanding first principals is exactly that.
The headline is the story: A $10000 price tag for a ~200mi EV is more impressive than the blown tire story.
Sorting and filing paperwork won't go away until AGI rightfully declares bureaucracy as the worst evil produced by humanity.
I understand the point is to be native but you can also just run them inside a very lightweight VM.
"Microsoft ExitOffer 26 is our most secure version of ExitOffer ever, with unrivaled privacy protection."
The very simple answer is you must have a battery system to complement the solar system or you're just losing power again when a cloud comes and decimates your household production. The electrical inertia must be held at a nice constant.
Re:Software may be getting worse, but it used to be horrible on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @09:00AM (#50258502)
Autosave worked just fine if you remembered to tick the box. BSOD I already mentioned was the only issue.

Client side hacks? Crypto is the bottleneck for all of security. Doing TLS on a 66MHz chip:

     Loading WWW.INSTAGRAM.COM

Wait a few seconds per each domain handshake to process.

           instagram.com.......................................................................................................................done.

     adsmanager.facebook.com...........................................................................................................done.
Re:Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @08:51AM (#50258372)
Not surprising in the least. You can even run 8-bit DOS that has GUI if you want to count mouse + ASCII as GUI.

Now show me your oldest working Linux Desktop apps.....

Re:Software may be getting worse, but it used to be horrible on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @08:44AM (#50258270)
All but one of these complaints are due to hardware limitations, not software. In fact, if there were cheap 200GB SSDs in 2003 this list would be down to the BSOD complaint. I have no idea why Autosave is even on this list, it did well in Word 95 and floppy disks and never was "horrible". Skip this one entirely, it is just wrong.
Indeed! If it is true, and it works, it is true and it works. These side dishes of major discoveries outpacing experts' complaints of slop are very satisfying as I do not care who gets imaginary existential points for discovering them.
