Re:Stop Abusing Semver on Wednesday July 29, 2020 @07:15AM (#23985440)
Dude! Nothing frustrates me more than people mistaking server version with api version. It means I can’t update one piece of infrastructure at a time or you can never break api compact. Your server needs to support multiple api versions for rational progression of a distributed system.
Re:Stop Abusing Semver on Wednesday July 29, 2020 @07:12AM (#23985419)
Where i work we abuse semver but I hope in a good way. Major is wire api break. Minor is effectively YYYYMMWW (we ship weekly) and patch is number of commits off stable branch.

Re:Secure channels over TCP/IP on Tuesday July 07, 2015 @07:19PM (#9848793)
I agree, you would have to tie IPs->peer keys to make this work.
Re:Secure channels over TCP/IP on Tuesday July 07, 2015 @07:15PM (#9848774)
nacl says that for security each nonce/key pair must be unique for each message. If you send a "HELO" message, for example first, you've made it possible to build a pretty simple rainbow table if nonce just starts at 0 or 1. That said, it would seem that the first nonce being random and then incremented would likely work well.
Re:Secure channels over TCP/IP on Tuesday July 07, 2015 @07:09PM (#9848739)
Your message length is sent in plain text and unauthenticated. Does this present a problem?

Re:Swatch Internet Time on Sunday January 12, 2014 @01:00PM (#7046747)
Sure, you would have to know that. But you have to look up if the business you want to contact is open on Sunday anyway, even if they are local. Or what time they close today.

Or you have to try to figure out the whole no work on Friday thing in the middle east and Monday being part of the weekend. You always have to look it up.

What made this dream cool in the digital age is I could just have hours that I'm available and if I wanted to work late at night, I could. I considered myself a 'hardcore hacker' in '98 and what appealed was how well this lined up with my natural inclination to hack on code from 10pm to 5am every day, despite being in high school.

I didn't care or need to know where my IRC friends were. We could collaborate none the less.

Re:Swatch Internet Time on Sunday January 12, 2014 @12:51PM (#7046698)
I was a huge fan of this in '98. Was very sad to see it fail. I even wrote custom software for Litestep so you could see what beat time it was.
Re:Swatch Internet Time on Sunday January 12, 2014 @12:49PM (#7046690)
As an example:

I don't know where you are, you don't know where I am. I tell you I am available from @300-@800 if you want to Skype today. Let me know which time is good for you.

Re:Americans don't trust each other anymore on Saturday November 30, 2013 @06:13PM (#6825110)
WW2 had a ton of propaganda about distrusting people, yet according to this article that was a very trusting time.
Re:Oracle releases 127 security fixes, 51 for Java alone on Thursday October 17, 2013 @09:03AM (#6565037)
This isn't one comment to HN with 127 spelling mistakes, it would be equivalent to 1000s of people as part of a collective group contributing 1000s of spelling mistakes over the past 15 years, then all of a sudden fixing a ton of the mistakes.

Your argument is wrong but your point is correct. In the above scenario, should they be applauded for fixing 3 year old spelling mistakes that someone told them about 3 years ago...

Re:Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander) on Thursday October 17, 2013 @08:49AM (#6564984)
This argument is akin to saying "isn't it beautiful that I can go from Lion to Mountain Lion within the same day".

You aren't changing much, just who packaged the software together.

Re:Cloudatcost: 35$ one-time virtual servers on Wednesday October 16, 2013 @10:32PM (#6563372)
I think this is probably a fair assessment. I just wish their website was slightly less shady.
Re:Cloudatcost: 35$ one-time virtual servers on Wednesday October 16, 2013 @10:11PM (#6563308)
Must be a scam...
Actually, you rarely want a predictable nonce as well. The difference is that a nonce must not repeat (or repetition is statistically irrelevant).

Even per wikipedia, many often refer to an IV as a nonce: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptographic_nonce

Re:Console.log() all the things on Friday July 26, 2013 @09:52AM (#6108178)
I just read this, interesting concept, albeit dirty. I still think we should all accept a logger and use this to work around bad libraries. $0.02
Re:Ask HN: How do you verify the identity of your users? on Thursday September 06, 2012 @10:35PM (#4487446)
You could use the PGP endorsement model. Network effects should work out decently.

Link to the patch?
Re:Ask HN: Why do big companies tend to only build with Java? on Tuesday November 15, 2011 @12:01PM (#3238950)
Once your code base gets to a certain size, the feature set gets big enough, and the maintenance starts stacking up, you need a more robust language.

Sure, plenty of web apps can run fine on Ruby, but even then, many of them start looking towards a language thats easier to maintain.

You missed the point
Re: on Saturday March 26, 2011 @05:20PM (#2373237)
This is a really really tough question to answer. How many other people are contributing to the company? How big is the company? How long have you been there? How much has "the man" put into the company financially and in terms of time?
Re:Working at Microsoft – Day to Day Coding on Monday February 28, 2011 @01:32AM (#2270352)
4 PMs to 5 devs seems like overkill. why do this?
