Yesterday I was debugging a device driver for LCD controller using an oscilloscope. Low level programming might not be the hot tech these days, but there are tens of thousands of people who are good at it, and many were born well after you started with computers. I would maintain that learning it is not that hard, for an average, good, working programmer.
