Singularity talk by fictional-ish writers is just a cheap search and replace job done by people who want to talk about their theories of a monotheistic God Version 2.0 and don't want historical baggage and automatic knee jerk reactions from the version 1.0 crowd.

An even better theistic analogy for the singularity is the return of Jesus. Just wait till he comes and rights all the wrongs and banishes death and knows everything about everyone who ever lived and makes a paradise on earth for the true believers ... wait was I talking about the singularity or Jesus again?

(note that I'm not (intentionally) making fun of either subject, but trying to focus on the crude search and replace aspect of the analogy)

I've long thought that the singularity is the tech version of the rapture.
