Novice question. If the transaction history of every bitcoin is public why couldn't the owners find their bitcoin?

Do you have to have the bitcoin to get the history? Does the transaction history not say where the bitcoin went?

It tells you the bitcoins have moved to address 1ekcj57h2kde45... (made up example). But you have no idea who owns this random address
