Layer on top that some offices are owned by private equity!

At my last visit, the new doc who took care of me for my third cleaning said: "Oh, by the way, we have these cavities we've been watching that need filling." It was never mentioned to me that they were keeping an eye on anything. I just had to wonder if every patient's third visit calls for a filling!

I used to be very regular with dental visits, and have had an enormous amount of work done over the years. Then I went to my first PE owned dentist (by accident) and it was such a horrific experience I've basically avoided dentists since.

There used to be some reasonable balance between the dentist wanting to make money and wanting to build a secure custommer base/happy clients. PE dentists are just money extraction machines with little to no concern for how much pain is caused getting money out of your wallet.

What was so horrific about it? Share some deets!

(Just avoiding going to the dentist is pretty extreme tho - probably reasonable to get them looked at at least yearly?)

Re:Do dentists know what they're doing? by apelapan on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @04:02PM (#50094246)
Why would it be reasonable to see a dentist yearly? Assuming there is no ongoing problem that needs ongoing care.
Re:Do dentists know what they're doing? by loloquwowndueo on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @06:01PM (#50096031)
How will you know if you have an ongoing problem otherwise? When was the last time you accurately spotted a cavity needing treatment?
Re:Do dentists know what they're doing? by apelapan on Thursday October 15, 2026 @01:09AM (#50099419)
Dentist can't spot cavities either, they just guess. The treatment for make-believe cavities will damage your teeth for real.

Bad dentists. FTFY. Now go get a good dentist.
Re:Do dentists know what they're doing? by apelapan on Thursday October 15, 2026 @12:05PM (#50105669)
Yeah, just try a dozen different ones, spaced out over a decade or two to have enough time to figure out if they were bullshitting you or not with what they suggested...

You can perhaps collect negative experiences from people you trust, and use that to narrow your selection. But you can't use good experiences, since the treatment people were happy with might as well have been a no-op and whatever problem they have would have gone away by itself in a short time. And if there wasn't a noticable pre-existing problem that was treated, but something the dentist made up on the stop, the treament someone was happy with might as well have been actively harmful, just not enough to be noticed right away.

Dentistry simply have too little credibility as a profession. If you need to pull a tooth out to make it stop hurting, sure, a random dentist is quite likely to do a reasonable job. At least compared to a random blacksmith. But as countless articles linked in this thread shows, dentists have absolutely no clue if you have cavities that need to be treated.

Haha what ??? Sure a totally rotten tooth would likely fall off by itself anyway but if that’s your baseline, we’re probably having different enough conversations that it’s not worth continuing to waste our time here.

Not talking about rotten or cracked or missing teeth. Talking about minor cavities, minor possible alignment issues and various stuff like that. The stuff most people go to the dentist for. The stuff the article we are discussing beneath is about.

Your body actually is rather capable of making you acutely aware of most health conditions that require intervention.
Re:Do dentists know what they're doing? by rsynnott on Thursday October 15, 2026 @09:18AM (#50103251)
By the time you become aware of a cavity, it might be pretty well advanced, and you may be looking at a crown or even root canal vs a filling.
Re:Do dentists know what they're doing? by loloquwowndueo on Thursday October 15, 2026 @10:22AM (#50104103)
A cavity requires intervention before your body tells you it does - by the time it does, you’ll be in excruciating pain and basically lose half a tooth to the drill. If you fix it before then, it’s much easier.

Exactly the same experience. I didn't realize mine was a scammer/basically a pain fetishist until I realized that it was suspicious that there wasn't a problem that I forgot to use the special mouthwash they made me buy for 20$ extra. I get home and realize it's homeopathic.

Same guy expects me to handle the pain of all four of my wisdom teeth being removed with literally one 12 pill vial of Vicodin. Acts like I'm doctor/pill shopping.

Reported him to my stats dental board, they get back to me with "well homeopathic remedies can't hurt you either, so we won't do anything to him!"

Dentists are the scum of reality, and their usage as traditional fronts for organized crime is done on purpose and as a trope in media it is sadly true.

Wage war on them as an economic group. They are almost as bad as chiropractors. Also a traditional occupation of corrupt state legislatures/senators.

Re:Do dentists know what they're doing? by doubled112 on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @06:54PM (#50096694)
I had all four wisdom teeth removed without anything more than acetaminophen and ibuprofen.

Are narcotics normally required to handle that?

I also had my gallbladder out via laparoscopic surgery with the same as pain relief. It's possible we just don't feel pain the same.

I was similar, but it really depends on the individual. OTC works well for some and does nothing for others.
Re:Do dentists know what they're doing? by rsynnott on Thursday October 15, 2026 @09:23AM (#50103337)
It’s dependent on how messy the extraction is, and on the person. It can be anything from ‘tooth pops out no bother’ to ‘invasive surgical procedure involving removing bone etc’. I had two of my wisdom teeth out, was just given ibuprofen, it was fine. Some years later, I had the other two out. One was significantly messier (the reason they only took two out in the first place was that this one had risk of nerve damage and they wanted to leave it alone if possible), and I was given ibuprofen and solpadeine (paracetamol/codeine). Took the solpadeine once, decided I didn’t like the way it made me feel, and just went with ibuprofen and paracetamol; was basically fine.

lol. Why do you need Vicodin for wisdom tooth removal? Women don’t get that shit after giving birth.

Do you expect your dentist to be listed on the stock exchange?

Re:Do dentists know what they're doing? by porridgeraisin on Thursday October 15, 2026 @02:03AM (#50099811)
I suppose they mean private equity in the boogeyman sense, which today is divorced from the plain definition "privately owned" and instead refers to the kind of private ownership that is focused on trimming the fat / squeezing the orange through enshittification as in cory doctorow.
Re:Do dentists know what they're doing? by fuzzfactor on Thursday October 15, 2026 @10:46AM (#50104447)
An individual practice is highly unlikely to ever be listed on a major stock exchange.

OTOH once in the hands of some private equity funds, they can pretty much do that to one of their properties whenever they feel like it, or even decide to take the whole PE group public if they get a wild hair.

All it takes is a little paperwork for them (the kind they are much more self-interested in compared to most decent medical professionals) perhaps including some bank notes.
