It is not normal for two parties to completely distrust each other. Adversarialism is evidence of trust, not distrust. If you don’t understand that, you don’t understand how the government works at all.
A generic partisan dispute is how much money to spend on health care versus roads versus the military versus foreign aid.
What’s occurring now is whether a president can punish individuals for funding his political opponents, enrich himself through obvious and undenied bribery, and send in the military only to Democratic majority cities to force them to submit to his will regarding immigration in violation of state and federal law.
LA is handling this provocation calmly. NYC and Philly will not be so relaxed about it as LA.
