Didn't they intentionally take down other Signal clients from Google Play? Although to play devils advocate they seem to have stopped being so aggressive. Still scary and concerning.

They mainly reported false Signal clients. What was the purpose of these fake clients is more worrying than their removal.

They did that because they were misusing the Signal trademark. You are not allowed to use their trademark when naming your fork.
