I tried to look up what the author is actually developing with the help of AI but it seems like his primary output is hand-wavy articles breathlessly hyping up AI and urging programmers to use AI for everything.

Your comment make sense only if you replace AI by LLM. The use of AI algo is usefull for many cases outside natural language processig problem and well before the "LLM revolution".

Regrettably it seems the term AI has been hijacked by LLMs. You must now be more specific when discussing AI: referring to classifiers, goal planning or decision making systems.

In another article, he rewrites history by saying that developers were making fun of auto-complete, which never happened of course because it was a reliable addition to our set of tools.
So yeah, most of his blog is about cramming and hyping AI without giving any proof.

I don't have a GPU supercluster laying around to train my own deepseek. You can't be independent and self sufficient in everything. Cooperation, delegation and specialization is what makes humanity so strong.

I also have gcc or go on my machine.
Proprietary language models are the proprietary compilers or languages of old.
As the blog post suggests, let's learn the lessons of the past.
If I can't run a tool locally (that includes 'compiling' the model from data) , it is a liability not a tool.
Even local models are like requiring proprietary firmware blobs as a programming tool.
Useful or not, this situation is not desirable.

My understanding, though it may be wrong, is that early on, "programmers" were people who typed in the work of others with little decision making.
